Objective Sex difference of the length ratios of metacarpals and metatarsals in Macaca mulatta from the Taihang mountains was studied in our laboratory. Methods The lengths of 27 metacarpals (10 males, 17 females) and 30 metatarsals(12 males, 18 females) were measured from the skeletons of 30 adult Macaca mulatta. Length ratios were constructed for all possible pairings of the five bones in each individual hand and foot. One-Way ANOVA adopting SPSS13.0 for windows was used to study the sex differences of length ratios of metacarpals and metatarsals. Results For Macaca mulatta, several of these lengths ratios exhibited substantial differences between the sexes. The metacarpal(Mc) length ratios showing the largest sex differences were 2Mc∶5Mc and 4Mc∶5Mc in both hands (P<0.01), and the metatarsal(Mt) length ratios showing the largest sex difference was 1Mt:3Mt in both feet (P<0.05). Conclusion The sex differences of metacarpals and metatarsals remained when specimens of similar size were compared. It showed that body size was not the basis for these sex differences. Various facts suggested that the sex difference of length ratios in primate metapodials was associated with sex hormones exposure, possibly during prenatal development.

To establish a sensitive and specific method for simultaneous determination of gestodene, etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol in plasma by LC-MS/MS, plasma samples were extracted and derivatized before injection. An ESI ion source was used and operated in the positive ion mode with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). Norgestrel was chosen as internal standard and performed on a C18 (100 mm x 2.1 mm, 5 microm) column. The concentrations of gestodene, etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol were measured, using step-gradient mobile phase and step-gradient flow rate. The method was validated over the concentration range of 0.1-20 ng x mL(-1) for gestodene and etonogestrel and 0.01-2 ng x mL(-1) for ethinylestradiol, and showed excellent linearity. The intra- and inter-assay accuracy and precision were below 10.0% and recovery was 93.6%-110.9% over the three concentration levels evaluated. The method was applied in pharmacokinetic study of the compound gestodene patch and the compound etonogestrel patch in rabbits. The LC-MS/MS method was selective, accurate and sensitive, especially the LOQ were 100 pg x mL(-1) for gestodene and etonogestrel and 10 pg x mL(-1) for ethinylestradiol. The method was successfully applied in pharmacokinetic study for contraceptives.

Aim Toexploretheinhibitioneffectof triptolide on nasopharynx cancer, and the mechanism. Methods Theinhibitionofcellproliferationwasde-tected by MTT assay;the cell apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry with propidium iodide staining. The ex-pressions of glucose regulated protein 78 ( GRP-78 ) , Akt and pAkt in cells were examined by Western blot;the effect of triptolide on reactive oxygen species ( ROS) accumulation was detected by ROS Fluorescent Probe-DHE.Results MTTassayshowedthatthe growth of nasopharynx cancer was inhibited by triptol-ide , and the inhibition occurred in a dose and time-de-pendent manner following triptolide treatment in CNE-2Z nasopharynx cancer cells. Propidium iodide staining revealed that the apoptosis of CNE-2 Z cells was in-duced remarkably by triptolide. After CNE-2Z cells treated with 25, 50,100 nmol·L-1 of triptolide for 24 h, the apoptosis rate was 14%,26. 9% and 34. 4% re-spectively. Western blot experiment showed that the expression of GRP-78 had no significant change follow-ing triptolide treatment in CNE-2 Z nasopharynx cancer cells for 24 h, but the expression and the phosphoryla-tion level of Akt were strikingly decreased. The experi-ment of ROS uncovered that CNE-2 Z nasopharynx cancer cells increased generation of ROS after treat-ment with triptolide for 4 hours, and acted cells in a dosedependentmanner. Conclusions Triptolidecan inhibit the growth of CNE-2 Z nasopharynx cancer cells in a dose and time-dependent maner. The mechanism may be related with the point that triptolide can induce oxidative stress, incease ROS, inhibit the expression and the phosphorylation level of Akt,then promote the apoptosis of CNE-2Z cells.
