Objective To investigate the optimal extraction technique and antioxidant activity of curcuminoids from Curcuma longa L. Methods The optimized extraction process of curcuminoids from Curcuma longa L. with ethanol as extracting solvent were studied based on orthogonal test. The effect of each factor such as the ethanol concentration, the amount of solvent, extraction temperature and extraction time were investigated based on a single-factor experiment. The effects of extraction yield of curcuminoids under different processing conditions were compared by HPLC method. Content of curcuminoids and antioxidant activity of the extract were used as comprehensive survey index. Free radical scavenging DPPH method was used to assess the antioxidant effect. And the extraction technique parameters were optimized. Results The condition of optimal extraction technique was: ethanol concentration 60%, amount of solvent 20 folds, extraction time 2 h, extraction temperature 90 ℃. Under these conditions, the extraction yield of curcuminoids was 3. 65%. DPPH free radical scavenging yield of the curcumin extract was 79.79%. Conclusion This optimized technology is simple and have a good reappearing rate, and the extracts of Curcuma longa L.show good antioxidant activity.

Journal of China Pharmaceutical University 2001;(3):221-223
AIM The purpose is to study the anti-arrhythmic effects of extracts from cultured Cordyceps sinensis. METHODS Aconitine and barium chloride were used to induce experimental arrhythmia models in rats. RESULTS The results showed that PE was more potent than other ingredients. Pretreatment with PE by oral administration significantly antagonized arrhythmia induced by aconitine. PE significantly prolonged the onset of arrhythmia, decreased the duration and diminished the degree of severity. And in barium chloride-induced arrhythmia model, PE had some anti-arrhythmia effect, which could diminish the degree of severity effectively to some extent. CONCLUSION PE is an active component to antagonize arrhythmia induced by aconitine and barium chloride.

The first case of acquired syphilitic skull osteitis accompanied by syphilitic meningitis in China is reported.A 55-year-old female presented with a persistent distending pain of the frontal and occipital regions of the skull for two months.T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging(MR1) showed muhiple lesions in the skull and linear enhancement of the meninge near the lesions. The serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were positive for Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (TPPA) and rapid plasma reagin circle card test(at the dilutions of 1∶32 and 1∶4 respectively). The levels of leukocyte and protein were 10 ×106/L and 0.82 g/L respectively in CSF.TP DNA was detected in the calvarial periosteum.Histopathological examination of the frontal bone showed focally destructive osteolytic lesions with obscure texture of the bone, hyperemia around the destructive bone tissue and in dura mater-like tissues, proliferation of interstitial fibrous tissue, swelling of endothelial cells and inflammatory infiltration predominantly composed of abundant plasma cells. After managed with routine treatment regimen for neurosyphilis, her headache was relieved 3 days later, nearly disappeared 15 days later, completely disappeared 30 days later. No similar headache recurred.A 5year follow up demonstrated a satisfactory long-term and short-term outcome. She was finally diagnosed with syphilitic skull osteitis complicated by syphilitic meningitis.

Background/Aims:
The aim of this study was to analyze the chronological changes in postoperative complications in surgical ulcerative colitis patients over the past decade in China and to investigate the potential parameters that contributed to the changes.
Methods:
Ulcerative colitis patients who underwent surgery during 2008–2017 were retrospectively enrolled from 13 hospitals in China. Postoperative complications were compared among different operation years. Risk factors for complications were identified by logistic regression analysis.
Results:
A total of 446 surgical ulcerative colitis patients were analyzed. Fewer short-term complications (24.8% vs. 41.0%, P=0.001) and more laparoscopic surgeries (66.4% vs. 25.0%, P<0.001) were found among patients who received surgery during 2014–2017 than 2008–2013. Logistic regression suggested that independent protective factors against short-term complications were a higher preoperative body mass index (odds ratio [OR], 0.870; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.785–0.964; P=0.008), laparoscopic surgery (OR, 0.391; 95% CI, 0.217–0.705; P=0.002) and elective surgery (OR, 0.213; 95% CI, 0.067–0.675; P=0.009). The chronological decrease in short-term complications was associated with an increase in laparoscopic surgery.
Conclusions
Our data revealed a downward trend of short-term postoperative complications among surgical ulcerative colitis patients in China during the past decade, which may be due to the promotion of minimally invasive techniques among Chinese surgeons.
