Carotenoids are secondary metabolite responsible for colored pigments in plants and microbes (Li et al., 2022). They are a class of C40 tetraterpenoids consisting of eight isoprenoid units, and can be classified into carotenes and xanthophylls on the basis of their functional groups (Saini et al., 2015). Carotenes can be linear (phytoene, phytofluene, and ζ-carotene) or branched (β-carotene and α-carotene). Xanthophylls comprise β,β-xanthophylls (β-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, violaxanthins, and neoxanthin) and β,ε-xanthophylls (α-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, and lutein). Citrus fruits are complex sources of carotenoids, which are the principal pigments responsible for the typical orange color of most types (Chen, 2020). The difference in total carotenoid content and the diversity of carotenoid isomer proportion also accounts for other colors of citrus fruits, such as yellow, red, and pink (Chen, 2020).

Cancer Research and Clinic 2023;35(5):334-338
Objective:To investigate the predictive value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and microvascular density (MVD) for the depth of infiltration in early gastric cancer. Methods:The pathological tissues of 24 patients with early gastric cancer (early gastric cancer group), 23 patients with advanced gastric cancer (advanced gastric cancer group) and 10 patients with gastritis (gastritis group) who admitted to Fenyang Hospital Affiliated of Shanxi Medical University from January 2020 to January 2022 were retrospectively collected. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect VEGF expression and MVD in the lesion tissues of each group, and the correlation of VEGF expression and MVD in gastric cancer tissues with the clinicopathological characteristics of patients was analyzed. Postoperative pathological diagnosis was treated as the gold standard. The efficacy of VEGF and MVD in predicting the depth of infiltration in gastric cancer and early gastric cancer was assessed by using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results:The VEGF positive expression rate was 10.00% (1/10), 29.17% (7/24) and 78.26% (18/23) in gastritis group, early gastric cancer group and advanced gastric cancer group, respectively, and the MVD was (21±5) strips/field, (23±9) strips/field and (43±15) strips/field, respectively. The positive expression rate of VEGF and MVD were related with the tumor diameter [>2 cm vs. ≤2 cm:69.70% (23/33) vs. 14.29% (2/14), (39±15) strips/field vs. (20±8) strips/field] and infiltration depth of gastric cancer [intramucosal carcinoma vs. submucosal carcinoma vs. advanced gastric cancer: 26.31% (5/19) vs. 40.00% (2/5) vs. 78.26% (18/23), (20±7) strips/field vs. (36±3) strips/field vs. (43±15) strips/field] (all P > 0.01), while not related with gender, age, tumor location, differentiation degree (all P > 0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of VEGF and MVD in predicting the depth of infiltration in gastric cancer was 0.716 (95% CI 0.581-0.828) and 0.711 (95% CI 0.573-0.823), respectively; the optimal cut-off value of VEGF and MVD was positive and 24.8 strips/field, with the sensitivity of 53.19%, 61.70%, and the specificity of 90.00% both. The AUC of VEGF and MVD in predicting the depth of infiltration in early gastric cancer was 0.596 (95% CI 0.414-0.760) and 0.506 (95% CI 0.330-0.681) , respectively; the optimal cut-off value of VEGF and MVD was positive and 32.5 strips/field, with the sensitivity of 29.17% , 70.83%, and the specificity of 90.00%, 0, respectively. Conclusions:VEGF expression and MVD are elevated with the increase of depth of gastric cancer infiltration, while the value of the combination of both in predicting the depth of infiltration in early gastric cancer is not high.

To study the effects of nucleoside antiviral drug zidovudine (AZT) on the flexibility of global metabolism and liver glucolipid metabolic balance in mice, male ICR mice were given zidovudine intragastric administration for 12 weeks, and their water and food intake was recorded daily.Serum glucose (GLU) and triglyceride (TG) levels and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were detected after 12 weeks of administration.Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and insulin tolerance test (ITT) were performed.HE staining was used to observe the pathological changes of liver. The gene levels of glucose transporter (Glut2), carnitine palmitate transferase (Cpt1α), medium chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase (Mcad), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (Pepck) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6pase) were detected by RT-PCR.Western blot was used to detect the protein levels of insulin signaling Akt, P-Akt, Glut2, Mcad and Cpt1α in liver. The results showed that zidovudine significantly decreased lipid metabolism, impaired glucose tolerance, increased liver cell volume, significantly increased liver triglyceride (TG) and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) content, increased Glut2 gene expression, down-regulated fatty acid oxidative metabolism genes Cpt1α, Mcad and gluconeogenesis related genes after fasting, and down-regulated protein expression of Cpt1α.The results suggest that zidovudine can induce the disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism after fasting in a dose-dependent manner.

A comprehensive profiling of the vaginal microbial communities and their variability enables an accurate description of the microbiome in women. However, there is a lack of studies available on Chinese women. In the present study, the composition of the vaginal microbiota during pregnancy and the 6-week postpartum period of 454 Chinese women was characterized by sequenc-ing the V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA(rRNA)gene. The vaginal microbiome showed variations during pregnancy and the postpartum period based on the abortion history, hypertensive disorders, delivery mode, and maternal age.Co-variation of 22 bacterial taxa, including the Lacto-bacillus genus and two of its species, may account for the common characteristics of the vaginal microbiome under scenarios of different medical histories and pregnancy outcomes. In contrast,dis-criminant bacterial species were significantly different between women who had preterm birth(PTB)with and without premature rupture of membranes(PROM),and the community state type(CST)Ⅳ-A without any predominant Lactobacillus species in the microbiota was more prevalent during pregnancy in the PROM-PTB cases, suggesting that specific bacterial species could be considered to distinguish between different types of PTB.By providing data on Chinese women, this study will enrich the knowledge of the human microbiome and contribute to a better understanding of the association between the vaginal microbiome and reproductive health.
