1.Exercise-induced Weight Reduce and Leptin (review)
Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2006;12(10):883-885
With the standard of living improved, people had less and less interests in exercise, adiposity has being a problem that people have to be up against all over the world. Exercise can step up energy expenditure, decrease fat accumulation, minish the volume of fat cell, and is one of widely used, effective, safe, economical measures of anti-adiposity. The adaptable change of neuroendocrine system in exercise quicken up fat to burn more. Leptine is an important signal of measuring fat content of body. The relationship between adiposity and leptin, and the effect of exercise on leptin was reviewed in this paper.

OBJECTIVETo assess the temperature variation of the root surface using Nd: YAG laser irradiation in the root canal with different power and to evaluate the safety of laser application on the periodontal region.
METHODSThirty extracted human teeth with single-roots were collected. The teeth were cross-sectioned in the cervical portion, standardizing the roots at a 12-mm length. The roots were used as specimen. The roots were radiographed in the buccal-lingual direction to measure the thickness of the proximal walls, by means of a digital radiographic system. The specimens were divided into three groups according to the laser potency (1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 W). Each group was subdivided into two subgroups according to laser frequency (15 and 30 Hz). With the Nd: YAG laser irradiation for 20 s, the temperature variation of the root surface was monitored by thermocouples located at different parts of the root external wall and recorded by digital thermometers.
RESULTSThe groups irradiated with 4.5 W presented the greatest temperature variation (above 10°C), followed by 3.0 and 1.5 W. The temperatures were statistically different (P < 0.01). The groups irradiated in the same potency, regardless of whether 15 Hz or 30 Hz was used, presented with no statistical difference (P > 0.05). The apical half of the root presented statistically higher temperature rises than the cervical half of the root (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe temperature variation of the root surface was associated with laser power, irradiation time, and the thickness of dentin. Application of Nd: YAG laser in the root at 1.5 W for 20 s can safely be used in endodontic treatment.

Objective To analyze white matter hyperintensities(WMH)and brain volumes quantitatively in patients with Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leucoencephalopathy(CADASIL)on conventional MRI and correlate them with clinical parameters. Methods Fifteen patients with CADASIL confirmed by pathological investigation underwent conventional MRI examinations.Involvement of centrum semiovale, posterior limbs of the internal capsule, corpus callosum, external capsules and white matter of the temporal poles was determined by an experienced radiologist.Normalized brain volume(NBV)and the percentage of WMH to brain volume were calculated with softwares and they were correlated with NIHSS and MMSE statistically. Results Involvement of white matter in the brains of patients with CADASIL included:semiovale centrum in 13 cases, white matter of the temporal poles in 10 cases, external capsules in 8 cases, posterior limbs of the internal capsule in 5 cases, corpus callosum in 4 cases. The percentage of WMH to brain volume was(5.7±1.4)%,and the NBV was(1602±58)×103mm3.Spearman test showed a significant relationship between age and NBV(r=-0.555,P<0.05).There was a significant relationship between NBV and NIHSS(r=-0.624.P<0.05).The percentage of WMH to brain volume correlated significantly with NIHSS and MMSE(r=0.522,P<0.05;r=-0.679,P<0.01).Conclusions The white matter hvperintensities and brain volume in patients with CADASIL can be assessed quantitatively, which showed correlation with severity of the clinical scale. The development of WMH may refleet the degree of cognitive impairment in CADASIL.

To develop a method to estimate the anti-Aspergilli activity of active ingredients of Chinese herbs. With the broth microdilution testing procedure proposed by NCCLS, anti-Aspergilli activity of active ingredients ( cinnamalde-hyde, cinn. and citral) of Chinese herbs was determined. The MIC values of cinn. to Aspergillus flavus, A.fumigatus were 0.100?g /mL , 0.050?g/mL.The MIC values of citral to A. flaws, A.fumigatus were 2.600?g/mL, 0.650?g/ mL.These results demonstrate that citral and cinn. have high potency activity against Aspergillus spp. .The research may provide references to establishing a standard for evaluating the effect of anti-Aspergilli Chinese herbs.

Objective To analyze the dynamic evolution of brain MRI in patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome. Methods A retrospective study was performed on 58 MELAS cases with pathologically and (or) molecularly confirmed diagnosis.MRI were repeated within 60 days after the onset of stroke-like episodes (SLE) and the evolution changes of cerebral lesions were accessed.Brain atrophy index (BAI) was calculated in the remission stage from 31 patients with MELAS,and the correlation between BAI,age and disease duration was analyzed. Results The proportion of lesions expansion, migration and shrink within 30 days after the onset of SLE was 64.1% (25/39),10.2% (4/39),17.9% (7/39),respectively,and 13% (3/23),21.7% (5/23),56.5% (13/23),between 30-60 days after the onset of SLE respectively. In the recovery stage of SLE,the BAI in 31 patients with MELAS was 15.2% ±2.8%.The correlation coefficient between BAI and the age, total disease course and duration of encephalopathy was 0.329 (P =0.043),0.405 (P =0.012) and 0.649 (P =0.000).Conclusions Brain atrophy in the studied MELAS patients gradually develops and strokelike lesions shrink with progression of the disease. However, the migration of lesions is persistent.

RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) is a newly-developed method in transcriptome research, it can afford more accurate transcription information and be more quickly by using Next-generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. RNA-Seq has been widely used in various biological fields. Genuine traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), with good quality and therapeutic effect, were always praised highly and used by famous physicians. The geo-herbalism formation of TCM is based on the product of the gene expression at specific space and time. So it has been a research hotspot to analyze the mechanism of biosynthesis through RNA-Seq in the study on the secondary metabolism of medicinal plant. This article mainly illustrates the RNA-Seq and its advantages, it also discusses the potential application in genuine TCM, and it can provide useful information for other researchers.
