Microbiology 1992;0(03):-
The antagonism of two strains B1 and B2 of Bacillus spp. against pea root rot pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi was studied. The result of pairing culture showed that B1 and B2 strains of Bacillus spp. had strong antifungal activity to the pathogen. The colonial color of the pathogen changed from gray to white, aerial hyphas increased and entangled into group after treatment with the cell-free fermentational filtrate of B1 or B2. Observation under optical microscope showed that hyphas and spores of the pathogen swelled and distorted with concentrated cytoplasm after treatment, the spores could not germinate or germinated abnormally . A lot of vesicles appeared at the top of the hyphas, and the hyphas stopped growing and broke finally, their cytoplasm spilled from the cell. The cell-free fermentational filtrate of B1 or B2 strains contained 1795.53?g/mL and 1345.93?g/mL protein respectively, from which two antifungal proteins of 103.5 kD (B1 ) and 127.6 kD (B2) were purified.

OBJECTIVETo study the changes of the amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) tracings within 6 hours after birth in term infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and explore the value of aEEG in early diagnosis and prediction of neurological outcome in term infants.
METHODSFrom May 2003 to February 2005, 33 term infants with HIE at the Division of Neonatology, Pediatric Hospital of Fudan University were studied by aEEG within 6 hours after birth. The results of aEEG were categorized into three groups (normal, mildly abnormal and severely abnormal aEEG), while HIE was clinically classified into three grades (mild, moderate and severe) and the neurological outcomes at 18 months were assessed (normal, disabled and dead). The correlation between the results of aEEG, severity of HIE and neurological outcome at 18 months were analyzed, respectively. The values of aEEG on early diagnosis and neurological outcome prediction of HIE were analyzed.
RESULTSAmong the 33 term infants with HIE, 20 infants had normal aEEG (normal amplitude aEEG), 5 had mildly abnormal aEEG (4 with mildly abnormal amplitude aEEG, 1 with normal amplitude and seizure) and 8 had severely abnormal aEEG (2 with mildly abnormal aEEG and seizures, 4 with severely abnormal amplitude and 2 with severely abnormal amplitude and seizures), respectively. Seventeen infants (51.5%) had mild HIE, 19 moderate (27.3%) and 7 (21.2%) severe HIE, respectively. Twenty-five cases were followed up, which showed that 19 had normal neurological outcome, 1 had disability and 5 died. By CMH square analysis and Spearman rank correlation analysis, the results of aEEG classification were correlated with the severity of HIE and the neurological outcome of term infants. Abnormal aEEG could predict the severity of HIE in term infants with a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 81.3%, positive predictive value of 85.0% and negative predictive value of 100%, respectively. Abnormal aEEG could predict the neurological outcome of term infants with HIE, which showed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 90.9%, positive predictive value of 93.3% and negative predictive value of 100%, respectively. Severely abnormal aEEG could predict the severe HIE in term infants with sensitivity of 96.2%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100% and negative predictive value of 87.5%, respectively. Severely abnormal aEEG could predict the neurological outcome of term infants with HIE, which showed sensitivity of 94.7%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100% and negative predictive value of 85.7%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONSMonitoring with aEEG in term infants with HIE within 6 hours after birth could predict the severity of HIE and its neurological outcome at 18 months.

Objective To investigate changes in serum levels of antinuclear antibody(ANA), anti?double?stranded DNA(dsDNA)antibody and anti?extractable nuclear antigen(ENA)antibody before and after anti?tumor necrosis factor?α(TNF?α)therapy in psoriatic patients. Methods Clinical data obtained from 32 patients with psoriasis were analyzed retrospectively. Of the 32 patients, 13 received intravenous injection of 5 mg/Kg infliximab at week 0, 2, 6 for 3 sessions, then once every 8 weeks(infliximab group), while other 19 received subcutaneous injection of 25 mg etanercept twice every week(etanercept group). The treatments in the 2 groups both lasted more than 3 months. Serum levels of ANA, anti?dsDNA antibody and anti?ENA antibody and changes of clinical symptoms were detected and observed respectively before each treatment in the infliximab group, as well as every 3- 6 months in the etanercept group. The 75%reduction in psoriasis area and severity index(PASI75)and disease activity score of 28 joints(DAS28) were used to evaluate clinical efficacy. Serum levels of ANA, anti?dsDNA antibody and anti?ENA antibody were measured by indirect immunofluorescence(IIF)assay, Western blot analysis combined with enzyme?linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), and Western blot analysis, respectively. Results After 3?month treatment, the 32 patients achieved clinical remission to different extents. Of 32 patients receiving anti?TNF?αtherapy, 7(21.9%)developed new autoantibodies. Concretely speaking, 4 patients in the infliximab group developed autoantibodies in 8.3 ± 5.1 months, including 3 cases positive for ANA and 3 for anti?ENA antibody. Three patients in the etanercept group developed autoantibodies in 9.0 ± 3.0 months, including 3 cases positive for ANA and 1 for anti?ENA antibody. Conclusion Partial patients with psoriasis may develop autoantibodies after anti?TNF?αtherapy.

OBJECTIVETo compare the clinical efficacy on upper limb motor impairment in stroke between the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture therapy and the traditional scalp acupuncture therapy.
METHODSThe randomized controlled trial and MINIMIZE layering randomization software were adopted. Seventy patients of upper limb with III to V grade in Brunnstrom scale after stroke were randomized into an interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group and a traditional scalp acupuncture group, 35 cases in each one. In the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group, the middle 2/5 of Dingnieqianxiexian (anterior oblique line of vertex-temporal), the middle 2/5 of Dingniehouxiexian (posterior oblique line of vertex-temporal) and Dingpangerxian (lateral line 2 of vertex) on the affected side were selected as the stimulation areas. Additionally, the rehabilitation training was applied during scalp acupuncture treatment. In the traditional scalp acupuncture group, the scalp stimulation areas were same as the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group. But the rehabilitation training was applied separately. The rehabilitation training was applied in the morning and the scalp acupuncture was done in the afternoon. The results in Fugl-Meyer for the upper limb motor function (U-FMA), the Wolf motor function measure scale (WM- FT) and the modified Barthel index in the two groups were compared between the two groups before treatment and in 1 and 2 months of treatment, respectively.
RESULTSAfter treatment, the U-FMA score, WMFT score and the score of the modified Barthel index were all apparently improved as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.01). The improvement in the U-FMA score after treatment in the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group was better than that in the traditional scalp acupuncture group (P < 0.05). For the patients of IV to V grade in Brunnstrom scale, WMFT score in 2 months of treatment and the score of Barthel index after treatment in the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group were improved apparently as compared with those in the traditional scalp acupuncture group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). But, for the patients of III grade in Brunnstrom scale, WMFT score and the score of Barthel index after treatment in the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture group were not different significantly as compared with those in the traditional scalp acupuncture group (both P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONFor the patients of IV to V grade in Brunnstrom scale in stroke, the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture therapy achieves the superior improvements of the upper limb motor function and the activity of daily life as compared with the traditional scalp acupuncture therapy, and the longer the treatment lasts, the more apparent the improvements are. For the patients of III grade in Brunnstrom scale, the interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture therapy achieves the similar improvement in the upper limb motor impairment as compared with the traditional scalp acupuncture therapy.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of selective moderate head cooling therapy on maximum length sequences brainstem auditory evoked potential (MLS-BAEP) in newborn piglets with hypoxic-ischemic brain damage.
METHODSSixteen newborn piglets aged 5-7 day old were randomly divided into three groups: normothermic control (n=4), HI (n=6) and mild hypothermia-treated (n=6). HI was induced through temporary occlusion of both carotid arteries, followed by mechanical ventilation with low concentration of oxygen (FiO2=0.06) for 30 minutes. Mild hypothermia was induced by equipment via circulating water. MLS-BAER was recorded before HI and at 12 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours, 48 hours, 60 hours, 72 hours, 4 days, 7 days, 10 days, 13 days and 15 days after HI.
RESULTSCompared with the normothermic control group, all latencies and intervals tended to increase significantly at 72 hours in the HI group and reached peak values on day 7. From day 10, all latencies and intervals tended to decrease, but apart from wave I latency, still differed significantly from those of the normothermic control group. MLS-BAER variables did not reach normal values until day 15. Ⅲ latency, Ⅰ-Ⅲ interval and Ⅰ-Ⅴ interval were significantly reduced in the hypothermia-treated group between 60 and 7 days after HI compared with the HI group (P<0.05). V latency and Ⅲ-Ⅴ interval in the hypothermia-treated group were also reduced compared with the HI group between 72 hours and 7 days after HI (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSBoth peripheral and central auditory systems are disturbed by HI, which shows as a significant increase in MLS-BAER variables (all latencies and intervals) in newborn piglets. Involvement in central brainstem auditory system reaches a peak on day 7 after injury. MLS-BAER variables still cannot reach to normal values until day 15. Selective moderate head cooling therapy can significantly reduce brainstem damage induced by HI.
