OBJECTIVETo research the effects of incorporating tetrapod-like zinc oxide whisker (T-ZnOw) of different proportions on the antibacterial activity of different kinds of soft denture liners.
METHODSThe minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of T-ZnOw against Saccharomyces albicans (S. albicans) were examined by the broth dilution test. Add T-ZnOw 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% to Silagum soft denture liners and soft denture liners respectively. The antimicrobial rate of S. albicans was determined by the membrane covering method.
RESULTSThe MIC of T-ZnOw against S. albicans was 78 microg mL(-1) and the MBC was 156 microg mL(-1). Comparing 1%, 2%, 3% T-ZnOw group with control group, the results showed significant difference (P<0.05). And as the T-ZnOw antibacterial agent added ratio increased, antibacterial increased significantly.
CONCLUSIONThe soft denture liners incorporating with 1%, 2%, 3% of T-ZnOw can improve antibacterial activity. Following the increased proportions of T-ZnOw, antibacterial rate was significantly increasing.

Objective To compare metabolite ratios in the basal ganglia regions between preterm and term neonates and analyze the correlation between metabolite ratio and postmenstrual age(PMA)using 2D magnetic resonance spectroscopy(MRS)at 3.0T,so as to explore the value of MRS in evaluating neonatal brain development. Methods Normal neonates who underwent 3.0T MRS exam ination were recruited.Axial 2D MRS was performed with the point-resolved spectroscopy sequence(PRESS)(echo time/repetition time,144 ms/1 000 ms) through the basal ganglia covering three regions of interest(ROI)(i.e.bilateral lenticular nucleus, thalamus and white matter beside the anterior horn of lateral ventricle). The peak areas ratios of Cho/Cr,NAA/Cho and NAA/Cr were calculated.Metabolite ratios were compared between preterm and term neonates, and between three ROIs. Correlation between metabolite ratio and PMA was further analyzed. Results Totally 54 neonates were included(preterm/term,27/27).In all the three ROIs,preterm neonates presented significantly higher Cho/Cr(P<0.05) and significantly lower NAA/Cho ratios(P<0.001)than those of term neonates;higher NAA/Cr ratio was only observed in the lenticular nucleus of preterm neonates(P<0.001).Significant differences in metabolite ratios were detected among the three ROIs in preterm group(P<0.05).For term group, metabolite ratios differed between lenticular nucleus and white matter beside the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle(P<0.01),while no difference between lenticular nucleus and thalamus was found(P>0.05).Significant correlation between metabolite ratio and PMA was found in all the three ROIs except NAA/Cr ratio in the white matter beside the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. To be specific,we found linear negative correlation of Cho/Cr ratio(r= -0.325,-0.633,-0.438) and positive correlation of NAA/Cho ratio(r = 0.604,0.773,0.483)in all the three ROIs,but negative correlations of NAA/Cr ratio(r=0.487,0.367)in lenticular nucleus and thalamus with PMA.Conclusion Our findings suggest the tempo-spatial pattern of neonatal brain metabolite development in terms of anatomic location and PMA.Besides, the multi-voxel MRS presents potentials in establishing the normal topologic and age-matched reference in neonates and thus making brain maturation assessment and detection of early abnormal metabolism.

OBJECTIVETo study the value of bacterial cultures of bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) in children with pulmonary infection.
METHODSBacterial cultures sampled from both sputum and BALF were performed on 80 hospitalized children with pulmonary infection between June 2008 and February 2011.Culture results between the two samples were compared.
RESULTSIn the 80 children with pulmonary infection, bacterial cultures of BALF showed that Viridans Streptococci were found in 72 cases (90%), Neisseria in 41 cases (51%), Streptococcus pneumoniae in 11 cases (14%), Staphylococcus Aureus in 3 cases (4%) and Escherichia coli in 3 cases (4%). The positive rates of Viridans Streptococci in the bacterial cultures of BALF was not significantly different from the bacterial cultures of sputum, but the positive rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the bacterial cultures of BALF was significantly higher than in the bacterial cultures of sputum (4%). Moreover, Escherichia coli were found only by bacterial cultures of BALF.
CONCLUSIONSBacterial cultures of BALF are useful in the identification of pathogenic bacteria for pulmonary infection in children. Due to the samples taken from the lesion regions in bacterial cultures of BALF, the results of may be more reliable.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of Qingikailing and Shengmai injection alone or combined on the acute lung injury (AL) induced by oleic acid in rabbits.
METHODThe rabbits were randomly divided into 11 groups: oleic acid group; control group; treatment groups including low, middle and high dosage groups of Qingkailing and Shengmai injection alone and combined, respectively. ALI model was established by iv oleic acid (0.05 mL x kg(-1)) in these groups, and then iv above drugs respectively, while in control group, the same volume of normal saline was given. The respiratory amplitude and rate were observed, and blood samples were taken from cervical artery for blood-gas analysis before and at 30, 60, 120 min after oleic acid or normal saline administration. At the end of experiment, the concentration of LDH, CAT and MDA in the lung tissue were measured and pathologic changes of lung tissue were observed microscopically.
RESULTCompared with oleic acid group, the respiratory amplitude markedly enhanced (P < 0.05) in the low and high dose groups of Qingkailing and Shengmai injection. PaO2 increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the low dose group of combined Qingkailing and Shengmai injection, PaCO2 decreased markedly (P < 0.05) in the low dose groups of Qingkailing and Shengmai injection alone and combined. The level of MDA significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the each group of Qingkailing and Shengmai injection alone, the level of MDA significantly decreased (P < 0.05) and CAT increased (P < 0.05) in the low dose group of combined Qingkailing with Shengmai injection. The low dose group of combined Qingkailing and Shengmai injection can alleviate the pathological changes induced by oleic acid.
CONCLUSIONThe curative effect of the low dose group of combined Qingkailing with Shengmai injection for the ALI induced by oleic acid was better than Qingkailing and Shengmai injection alone at the same dosage.

BACKGROUNDWith the progress of perinatal medicine and neonatal technology, more and more extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survived all over the world. This study was designed to investigate the short-term outcomes of ELBW infants during their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay in the mainland of China.
METHODSAll infants admitted to 26 NICUs with a birth weight (BW) < l000 g were included between January l, 2011 and December 31, 2011. All the data were collected retrospectively from clinical records by a prospectively designed questionnaire. The data collected from each NICU transmitted to the main institution where the results were aggregated and analyzed. Categorical variables were performed with Pearson Chi-square test. Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to detect risk factors.
RESULTSA total of 258 ELBW infants were admitted to 26 NICUs, of whom the mean gestational age (GA) was 28.1 ± 2.2 weeks, and the mean BW was 868 ± 97 g. The overall survival rate at discharge was 50.0%. Despite aggressive treatment 60 infants (23.3%) died and another 69 infants (26.7%) died after medical care withdrawal. Furthermore, the survival rate was significantly higher in coastal areas than inland areas (53.6% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.019). BW < 750 g and GA < 28 weeks were the largest risk factors, and being small for gestational age was a protective factor related to mortality. Respiratory distress syndrome was the most common complication. The incidence of patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity was 26.2%, 33.7%, 6.7%, 48.1%, and 41.4%, respectively. Ventilator associated pneumonia was the most common hospital acquired infection during hospitalization.
CONCLUSIONSOur study was the first survey that revealed the present status of ELBW infants in the mainland of China. The mortality and morbidity of ELBW infants remained high as compared to other developed countries.

This paper aims to explore the activity of Codonopsis canescens extract against rheumatoid arthritis(RA) based on the Toll-like receptors(TLRs)/mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs)/nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) signaling pathways and its mechanism. The ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) was used to identify the components of C. canescens extract. Forty-eight male SD rats were randomly divided into six groups, namely the normal group, the model group, the methotrexate(MTX) tablet group, and the low, medium, and high-dose C. canescens extract(ZDS-L, ZDS-M, and ZDS-H) groups, with 8 rats in each group. The model of collagen-induced arthritis in rats was induced by injection of bovine type Ⅱ collagen emulsion. MTX(2.5 mg·kg~(-1)), ZDS-L, ZDS-M, and ZDS-H(0.3 g·kg~(-1), 0.6 g·kg~(-1), and 1.2 g·kg~(-1)) were administrated by gavage. Rats in the normal group and the model group received distilled water. MTX was given once every three days for 28 days, and the rest medicines were given once daily for 28 days. Body weight, degree of foot swelling, arthritis index, immune organ index, synovial histopathological changes, and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-1β(IL-1β), and interleukin-6(IL-6) were observed. Protein expressions of TLR2, TLR4, NF-κB p65, p38 MAPK, and p-p38 MAPK in rats were determined by Western blot. Thirty-four main components were identified by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, including 15 flavonoids, 7 phenylpropanoids, 4 terpenoids, 4 organic acids, 2 esters, and 2 polyalkynes. As compared with the normal group, the body weight of the model group was significantly decreased(P<0.01), and foot swelling(P<0.05, P<0.01), arthritis index(P<0.01), and the immune organ index(P<0.01) were significantly increased. The synovial histopathological injury was obviously observed in the model group. The serum levels of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 were significantly increased(P<0.01), and the protein expression levels of TLR2, TLR4, NF-κB p65, p-p38 MAPK/p38 MAPK in the synovial tissue were significantly increased(P<0.01) in the model group. As compared with the model group, the body weights of the ZDS dose groups were increased(P<0.01), and the degree of foot swelling(P<0.01) and the arthritis index were decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01). The immune organ index was decreased(P<0.01) in the ZDS dose groups, and the synovial tissue hyperplasia and inflammatory cell infiltration were alleviated. The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 were significantly decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01), and the protein expression levels of TLR2, TLR4, NF-κB p65, p-p38 MAPK/p38 MAPK were decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01) in the ZDS dose groups. C. canescens extract containing apigenin, tricin, chlorogenic acid, aesculin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, and oleanolic acid has a good anti-RA effect, and the mechanism may be related to the inhibition of TLRs/MAPKs/NF-κB signaling pathways.
