OBJECTIVETo observe the curative effect of Qianjin Kouchuang Jiawei Granule (QKJG) on recurrent oral ulceration [yin deficiency fire excess type (YDFET)].
METHODSTotally 120 patients who suffered from recurrent oral ulceration (YDFET) were randomly assigned to two groups, the experiment group and the control group, 60 in each group. Patients in the experiment group took QKJG, 20 g each time, twice per day, while those in the control group took Kouyanqing Granule (KG) , 20 g each time, twice per day. Fourteen days consisted of one therapeutic course, two for all. Scores for patients' symptoms and signs (ulcer area, exudation, hyperaemia, edema, the number of ulceration, burning sensation, and pain degrees) were assessed before treatment, at day 3 and 7 after treatment. Short-term efficacy was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS). The total paralysis time and the total number of ulceration at month 12 after treatment were taken as judgment for long-term efficacy. Results Compared with before treatment in the same group, symptoms and signs were obviously improved at day 3 and 7 after treatment in the two groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group at day 3 after treatment, the improvement of edema, exudation, pain degree, and burning sensation was more obvious in the experiment group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The improvement of edema, pain degree, and burning sensation at day 7 after treatment was more obvious in the experiment group than in the control group (P < 0.05). As for short-term efficacy, the total effective rate was 86.67% (52/60 cases) in the experiment group and 83.33% (50/60 cases) in the control group, with no statistical difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). As for long-term efficacy, the total effective rate was 90.00% (54/60 cases) in the experiment group, significantly higher than that of the control group with statistical difference [81.67% (49/60 cases), P < 0.05]. At month 12 after treatment, the total number of ulceration was reduced and the paralysis time of ulcer attack prolonged in the experiment group, with statistical difference when compared with the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONQKJG showed better long-term efficacy than that of KG in treating recurrent oral ulceration (YDFET).

OBJECTIVETo investigate whether connective tissue growth factor (CGGF) is expressed in mast cells (MCs) in lung in the development of bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis.
METHODSThirty-two male SD rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: BLM group and control group (n=16). The rats in BLM group were received single intratracheal instillation of BLM (5 mg/kg), and the rats in control group received equal volume of 0.9% normal saline(NS) to BLM. The rats in each group were sacrificed for lung tissue sampling on day 14 and day 28 after intratracheal instillation respectively. As the index of the severity of pulmonary fibrosis, the content of hydroxyproline in lungs was analyzed by chloramine T method. Mast cells and CTGF expression in lungs were examined by toluidine blue stain and immunohistochemical assay respectively.
RESULTS(1) On day 28 after intratracheal instillation of BLM, the content of hydroxyproline in lungs of rats was higher than that of control rats (P < 0.01). (2) Compared to control rats, the rats on day 14 and day 28 after instillation of BLM showed increased number of mast cells (Both P < 0.01) and up-regulated CTGF expression (Both P < 0.01). (3) No CTGF immuno-positive MCs were seen in the lungs of control rats whereas CTGF immuno-positive MCs were observed in the pathological areas in lungs of rats on day 14 and day 28 after BLM.
CONCLUSIONCTGF is expressed in MCs in lungs in the development of pulmonary fibrosis, which might be one of the mechanisms underling promoting effect of MCs on fibrosis in lung.

Objective To investigate the influence of intraoperative thermostasis over respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in patients undergoing radical operation for lung cancer. Methods Thirty-two ASA Ⅱ or Ⅲ patients scheduled for radical operation for lung cancer under general anesthesia were randomized into two groups ( n = 16 each): control group (Group C) and warming group (Group W). The patients in Group C were kept warm by routine measures such as using woollen blankets, while the patients in Group W were kept warm by force-air warming system and fluid warming device as soon as the patients were admitted to the operation room. Rectal and axillary temperatures were continuously monitored as the core and surface temperature, respectively. The core temperature was maintained at the preoperative level (baseline). Anesthesia was induced with midazolam, fentanyl and propofol. Tracheal intubation was facilitated with rocuronium. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane and nitrous oxide and intermittent i.v. boluses of fentanyl, midazolam and vecuronium. Venous blood samples were obtained before, during and at the end of surgery for normal blood analysis and respiratory burst of PMNs which included activated PMNs count and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Results (1) WBC and PMN counts were significantly increased during and after operation as compared with the baseline values before operation in both groups and there was no significant difference in WBC and PMN counts between the two groups. (2)Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) stimulation resulted in higher intraoperative and postoperative activated PMN counts in both groups and higher postoperative ROS production in Group W. Postoperative ROS production was significantly higher in Group W than in Group C. (3) The PMN counts without stimulation activation during operation and intra- and post-operative ROS production were significantly decreased as compared with the baseline values before operation in Group C, while in Group W there was no significant difference in pre-, intra- and post-operative activated PMN counts and ROS production. The intraoperative PMN counts and intra- and post-operative ROS productions were significantly higher in Group W than in Group C.Conclusion Intraoperative thermostasis can effectively maintain activated PMN count and ROS production without stimulation and enhance ROS production with stimulation in patients undergoing radical operation for lung cancer.
