2.Clinical efficacy of buzhong yiqi pill combined with imodium in treating post-operational diarrhea in patients of colonic cancer.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical efficacy of Buzhong Yiqi Pill (BYP) combined with imodium in treating post-operational diarrhea in patients undergoing colonic cancer surgery.
METHODSEighty patients with diarrhea after colorectal cancer surgery were randomized into two groups equally, the control group were treated with imodium (loperamide hydrochloride) and the treatment group treated by BYP combined with imodium. The therapeutic efficacy was analyzed and evaluated comprehensively depending upon a defecation check table developed from the XU Zhong-fa's 5-item 10-integrable system.
RESULTSAfter treatment, the improvements of the anal controlling capacity, the defecatory sensation, the frequency of defecation in the treatment group were significantly better than those in the control group (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). The integral function of defecation in the treatment group was obvionsly improved by the end of treatment when compared with before treatment and the control group (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe clinical efficacy of the BYP combined with imodium in treating post-operational diarrhea after colorectal cancer surgery were better than that of imodium alone.

3.Relationship between vascular endothelial function and aortic compliance in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome and hypertension

OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between vascular endothelial function and aortic compliance in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) and hypertension. METHODS A total of 103 OSAHS cases were divided into simple OSAHS group(n=55) and OSAHS complicated with hypertension group(n=48, OSAHS+HT group). 20 patients with simple hypertension were included into the hypertension group, and 20 healthy people served as controls. Vascular endothelial function was evaluated by detecting flow mediated dilation of the brachial artery(FMD) with color Doppler; the changes of aortic compliance in patients were detected by echocardiography. RESULTS The FMD, aortic tension and aortic distensibility index levels of OSAHS with hypertension group were significantly lower than the normal control group, hypertension group and OSAHS group(P<0.05); The aortic stiffness index level of OSAHS hypertension group was significantly higher than the normal group, the high blood pressure group and OSAHS group(P<0.05); Analysis of Spearman correlation coefficient of patients in OSAHS with hypertension group found aortic FMD were positively correlated with aortic stiffness index, negatively correlated with aortic tension index and aortic expansion; The aortic FMD, aortic tension, swelling index and aortic stiffness index in OSAHS hypertension group had positive correlation with AHI (P<0.05), and negative correlation with LSaO2(P<0.05). CONCLUSION OSAHS is associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction and decreased aortic compliance. When combined with hypertension, vascular endothelial function and aortic compliance will be significantly affected. The severity of OSAHS was closely related to the decrease of vascular endothelial function and the changes of aortic compliance.

Objective To assesse the quality of life of patients after cardiac pacemaker implantation using the Chinese version of SF-36.Methods Ninety-eight patients with permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation were investigated before and after the operation in terms of quality of life by using the Chinese version SF-36.Results Successful surgery was performed on all the 98 patients.The previous symptoms of the patients were improved to vari- ous extend after the operation.The quality of life of the patients was significantly improved after operation as demon- strated by the significant difference of the scores in 9 domains of SF-36 when compared with those before the operation (P

Litsea cubeba is one of aromatic medicinal plant belonging to family Lauraceae. The roots, stems and fruits of L. cubeba have been widely applied as folk medicines in some districts in China for relieving rheumatism and cold, regulating Qi (meridian) to alleviate pain. Previous studies revealed that this species contains major alkaloids, in specific aporphines, and minor flavonoids, lignans as well. Related pharmacological investigations demonstrated its activities and clinical applications on cardiovascular diseases, anti-cancer, against rheumatoid arthritis, relieving asthma and anti-allergic effects, as anti-oxidants, and so on. As an effort for further exploration of this bioactive ingredients and potential drug development, this paper summarizes most phytochemical and pharmacological results. Further, future prospects are also included.

To observe the effects of total flavones of Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng (TFM) on volume-overload cardiac hypertrophy and the expression of c-Fos protein in rat. Methods Volume-overload cardiac hypertrophy of rat was induced by aortocaval shunts. The rats were given ig TFM (400, 40 and 4 mg/kg/d). c-Fos protein in the ventricles were measured by immunocytochemical study. Results TFM at the above dosage decreased heart weight and contents of RNA and protein in the myocardium, inhibited the expression of c-Fos protein in the ventricles. Conclusion TFM can prevent volume-overload cardiac hypertrophy in rats. The inhibitory effects on the expression of c-Fos protein may be its mechanism in the molecular level.
8.The toxic and protective effects of Polygonum multiflorum on normal and liver injured rats based on the symptom-based prescription theory.

The dosage-efficacy/toxicity relationship of the 50% alcohol extracts of Polygonum multiflorum was comparatively investigated on either normal or CCl4-induced chronic liver injury rats, by determining the general condition, serum biochemical indices and liver histopathology, coupled with the factor analysis. The dosages were 10 and 20 g raw materials per kg body weight. Compared with the normal control group, the normal high dose group showed significant increases of the serum alanine transaminase (ALT), total bilirubin (TBIL), high mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), as well the frequent incidences of inflammatory cell infiltration, hepatic sinus enlargement and fiber stripes formation in histopathological sections. Compared with the model control group, the model low dose group showed significant declines of serum ALT, aspartate transaminase (AST) and total bile acid (TBA) (P < 0.05), as well the alleviation of vacuoles of hepatocytes, but no amelioration of the inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrous tissue hyperplasia; moreover, the model high dose group showed significant degeneration declines of serum HMGB-1, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and IL-1β (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), as well the evident alleviation of vacuoles degeneration of hepatocytes, inflammatory cells infiltration and fibrosis degree. The factor analysis showed that the low dosage treatment had almost neither injuring effect on the normal rats nor protective effect on the model rats; while the high dosage treatment showed observable injuring effect on the normal rats, expressed by the significant increases of the factor-1 (HMGB-1, TNF-α and IL-1β as the main contributors) and factor-2 (TBIL, ALT and TBA as the main contributors) relative to the normal control group. The liver protective effect of the high dosage treatment could be observed with the significant reduction of the factor-1, indicating the effective alleviation of the expression of inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, it could illustrated the phenomenon of symptom-based prescription theory of Polygonum multiflorum on rat livers: the high dosage of the herb had either an injuring effect on normal rats, or a therapeutic effect on the rats with chronic liver injury.

9.Identification of Rhodiola species by using RP-HPLC.

An approach was established using RP-HPLC (reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography) to identify ten species of Rhodiola, R. coccinea A. Bor, R. junggarica C.Y. Yang et N.R. Cui spn., R. heterodonta A. Bor, R. linearifolia A. Bor, R. pamiro alaiucm A. Bor, R. kaschgarica A. Bor, R. litwinowii A. Bor, R. gelida schrenk, R. rosea L. and R. quadrifide Fisch et Mey collected from the Tianshan Mountains areas of China. Chromatograms of alcohol-soluble proteins, generated from these ten Rhodiola spp. were compared. Each chromatogram of alcohol-soluble proteins came from a single seed of one wild species only. The results showed that when using a Waters Delta Pak. C18, 5 microm particle size reversed phase column (150 mm x 3.9 mm), a linear gradient of 22%-55% solvent B with a flow rate of 1 ml/min and a run time of 67 min, the chromatography gave optimum separation of Rhodiola alcohol-soluble proteins. Chromatogram of each species was different and could be used to identify those species. Cluster analysis of genetic similarity coefficients of 37% to 60% showed a medium degree of genetic diversity among the species in these eco-areas. Cluster analysis showed that the ten species of Rhodiola can be divided into four clusters and yielded the general and unique biochemical markers of these species. RP-HPLC was shown to be a rapid, repeatable and reliable method for Rhodiola species identification and analysis of genetic diversity.

10.Classification and functional study of peripheral blood dendritic cells in patients with coronary artery disease with different atherosclerotic plaques.

OBJECTIVETo study the quantitative and functional changes of peripheral blood dendritic cells (DCs) and their subsets in the leukocyte population in patients with coronary artery disease (CHD) with different coronary artery plaques and explore the relation between DCs and coronary plaque development.
METHODSThirty CHD patients were divided into SAP (10 cases), UAP (10 cases) and ACS (10 cases) groups, with another 10 patients having negative result in coronary angiography as the control group. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) was performed to identify the nature of the plaques. The percentage and absolute number of peripheral blood DCs and DC subsets were measured by flow cytometry. The functional status of the DCs was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and flow cytometry.
RESULTSIn the SAP group, IVUS found stable plaques in 8 cases and unstable plaques in 2 cases; in UAP group, 7 patients had unstable plaques, 2 had stable plaques, and 1 had plaque rupture. Plaque rupture, unstable plaques and stable plaques were found in 6, 3 and 1 patients in ACS group, respectively. In comparison with patients with stable plaques, those with unstable plaques had significantly increased percentages and number of DCs, mDCs and mDC1 (P<0.05), while the mDC2s and pDCs showed no obvious difference between them (P>0.05). The percentages and number of DCs, mDCs, mDC1s and pDCs were significantly decreased in patients with ruptured plaques (P<0.05). In peripheral blood monouclear cells cultured for 7 days, the CD83 expression was significantly higher in unstable and rupture plaque groups than in stable plaque group, and no significant difference was found between stable plaque group and the control group (P>0.05). In unstable and rupture plaque groups, co-culture with 2x10(5)/ml DCs evoked strong proliferation of the T cells in comparison with the stable plaque group, but no difference was found between the stable plaque and the control groups (P>0.05). Significantly higher levels of interleukin-2 and interferon-alpha were detected in the supernatant of the mixed lymphocyte reaction in unstable and ruptured plaque groups than in stable plaque and control groups, without obvious difference between the latter two groups.
CONCLUSIONThe percentage and absolute number of peripheral blood DCs and their functional status suggest the alterations of the coronary artery plaques in CHD patients.
