Objective To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous laser treatment for varicose great saphenous veins of lower limbs. Methods .Intravenous laser treatment in combination with surgical procedure was used to treat 126 cases of varicose great saphenous vein (150 limbs) in this hospital between July 2002 and May 2004. Results .The operation time was 30~50 min (mean, 45 min). A follow-up for 3~19 months (mean, 6 months) in 120 cases (142 limbs) was carried out. Out of the 142 limbs, symptoms of soreness and lacking in strength completely disappeared in 134 limbs (94.4%) and partially subsided in 8 limbs (5.6%). A complete disappearance of symptoms of skin pigmentation and swelling was achieved in 45 limbs (90.0%, 45/50) and 97 limbs (96.4%, 97/101), respectively. The varicose superficial veins vanished in all the limbs without recurrence. Complications included skin burn on the medial malleolus (2 cases) or anterior shank (2 cases), numbness and hypoesthesia on the medial shank (3 cases), and subcutaneous cord-like hard tubercles (32 cases, which were completely softened and absorbed 3 months later). Conclusions .Intravenous laser treatment is a reliable method in the treatment of varicose great saphenous veins, with simplicity of performance, good safety, little influence of normal activities, and excellent cosmetic results.

Objective To assess the feasibility for the automated treatment planning verification system Mobius3D (M3D) to perform an independent 3D dose calculation in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for cervical cancer. Methods Twenty patients with cervical cancer were randomly selected. With treatment planning systems (Pinnacle,Version 9.2;Eclipse,Version 13.5),all IMRT plans were divided into 7 fields to meet the dosimetric goals. The optimized plans were exported to the M3D server. The percentage differences in the volume of region of interest (ROI) and the dose calculation of target volume and organ at risk (OAR) were evaluated for the two treatment planning systems, and theγ passing rate was used to assess the accuracy of M3D calculation. Results The difference in the volume of ROI for Pinnacle 9.2 to M3D was less than that for Eclipse 13.5 to M3D,with maximum differences of 0.22%±0.69% and 3.5%±1.89% for Pinnacle 9.2 and Eclipse 13.5,respectively.The differences in the dose calculation of target volume and OAR for the two treatment planning systems to M3D were within ± 1%.After recalculating by M3D,the dose difference between Pinnacle 9.2 and M3D was smaller than that between Eclipse 13.5 and M3D,but the mean differences were all within ±3%.The γ passing rates for target volume and OAR were more than 95% on average. Conclusions The method of utilizing the automated treatment planning verification system to validate the accuracy of plans is convenient. It can be used as a secondary check tool to improve accuracy in IMRT dose calculation.

AIM: To determine whether nuclear Ca 2+ is independently regulated from the cytosolic Ca 2+ and nuclear Ca 2+ oscillation induced by many modulating factors in cultured rat neonatal myocytes and its mechanism. METHODS: Rat neonatal cardiac myocytes were cultured, and fluo-4/AM was loaded as calcium probe. The changes of cytosolic and nuclear Ca 2+ were observed by confocal laser microscopy. RESULTS: Calcium fluorescent intensity oscillated slightly in myocardiocytes and the average intensity was much higher in the nucleus than that in the cytosole. Ca 2+ oscillation in nucleus and cytosole induced by norepinephrine, isoproperenol, ATP were completely blocked by Ca 2+ -ATPase antagonist thapsigargin (10 -6 mol/L),L-type Ca 2+ channel blocker verapermil (500 ?mol/L) and KCl (20 mmol/L). Ca 2+ -ATPase antagonist thapsigargin completely blocked the propagation of Ca 2+ waves and simutaneouly induced a temporary Ca 2+ increase followed by a magnificient drop and loss of response to norepinephrine. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggested that generation and maintenance of calcium oscillation both in cytosole and nucleus depended on extracellular Ca 2+ influx, membrane potential, Ca 2+ release and uptake of cytosolic and nuclear calcium stores. The difference between cytosolic calcium and nuclear calcium indicated that calcium regulating system relatively independent of cytosole may exist in nucleus.
