OBJECTIVETo study the effect of acupuncture on the immune function of sepsis patients.
METHODSNinety sepsis patients were assigned to the control group, the thymosin a1 group, and the acupuncture treatment group according to random digit table, 30 patients in each group. Patients in the control group were treated according to the guideline of Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC). Patients in the control group received routine treatment. Those in the thymosin alpha1 group additionally received subdermal injection of thymosin alpha1 (1.6 mg), once per day for 6 successive days. Needling at related points such as Zusanli (ST36), Yanglingquan (GB34), Neiguan (PC6), Guanyuan (RN4), and so on, was performed in patients of the acupuncture treatment group, once per day for 6 successive days. T cell subgroups (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+ /CD8+) and immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgA, IgM) were detected. The length of ICU hospital stay, hospital readmission rate, and 28-day mortality were compared among the three groups.
RESULTSAfter six days of treatment, CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, IgG, IgA, IgM, and CD4+ /CD8+ ratio of three groups were all significantly increased (P < 0.01). Of them, CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, IgG, IgA, and IgM increased more significantly in the thymosin alpha1 group and the acupuncture treatment group (P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the ICU hospitalization length was significantly shortened, the hospital readmission rate and the 28-day mortality were lower in the thymosin alpha1 group and the acupuncture treatment group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). There was no statistical difference in each index between the thymosin alpha1 group and the acupuncture treatment group (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONAcupuncture could adjust the immune function of sepsis patients, improve their immunological indicators and prognoses.

Virologica Sinica 2001;16(2):155-160
Argyrogramma agnata has been selected as a substitutive host insect for producing Dendrolimus punctatus Cytoplasmic Polyhedrosis Virus (DpCPV). In our experiment, it is very susceptible to DpCPV. The DpCPV produced in A. agnata is designated Aa-DpCPV. The cytoplasmic polyhedra body (CPB), the virion size and the shape of Aa-DpCPV are same as that of its original DpCPV (DpCPV-W1984). The RNA bands of Aa-DpCPV and DpCPV-W1984 all have 10 RNA segments respectively in 3% PAGE, which molecular weights ranged in size from 2.98×106 to 0.66×106 Dalton. Aa-DpCPV has the same strong toxicity as that of DpCPV-W1984 (from D. punctatus) to D. punctatus (Walker) larva. So it can be applied to the pine caterpillar control. The DpCPV yield in A.agnata is 2.5×108CPB/larva.

Objective To optimize immunodominant protein combinations for serological screening for Cblamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection. Methods Both serum and genital swab samples were collected from 50 patients with Ct infection confirmed by colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA),and 30 GICA-negative clients without Ct infection at a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. The 30 serum samples from GICA-negative clients were also negative for microimmunofluorescence (MIF) assay.Eight Ct immunodominant proteins, including Pgp3,CPAF,CT143,CT101,CT694,CT875,CT813 and IncA,were selected as antigens to detect corresponding antibodies in the serum samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with the Ct proteins Hsp60 and major outer membrane protein (MOMP) as references. The results of ELISA were compared with those of the traditional gold standard method MIF assay to determine the immunodominant protein combination with the highest sensitivity and specificity. Results Of the 50 serum samples from patients with Ct infection,44 were positive and 6 negative by MIF.The results of ELISA with the combination of immunodominant proteins Pgp3,CT694 and CT875 as antigens were 97.73% (43/44) consistent to those of MIF assay.Of the 30 serum samples from GICA-negative clients, all were negative by MIF.Meanwhile,no antibody was detected against any of the immunodominant proteins Pgp3,CT694 and CT875 in any of the serum samples from GICA-negative clients. Conclusions The ELISA with the combination of immunodominant proteins Pgp3,CT694 and CT875 as antigens has good sensitivity and specificity for serological screening for Ct infection, and is simple to operate and easy to popularize.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2012;(11):968-971
Background Ginkgolide B (GB) has been proved to have neuroprotective and anti-apoptotic effects and can effectively inhibit apoptosis of retinal photoreceptor cells. But the high hydrophobic feature and low bioavailability of GB limit its clinical application.Self microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) can effectively improve the infusibility drug dissolution and bioavailability in the retina. Objective This study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics and drug-time change of GB-loaded SMEDDS in retina. Methods Eighty SD rats were randomized into 2 groups,2.5% GB(40 mg/kg) of SMEDDS or GB suspension(0.1% DMSO dissolve) were gastrically given respectively in two groups. The rats were sacrificed and retinas were isolated 15,30,45 minutes and 1 hour,2,4,8,12 hours to prepare the retinal suspension. The content of GB in retina was assayed with high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-(1) (1)ss spectrum (HPLC-ESI-MS) and contrasted with standard curve.Practical drug dynamics program 3p87 was used to detect the pharmacokinetics parameters. The maximal content(Cmax,mg/g),time to peak (Tmax,h),clearance ratio (Ke/h),high-life period (t1/2) and area under the concentration-time curve(AUC0-∞,mg/(g · h)) of GB in various time points in retina after a single oral dose were calculated and compared between two groups. Results The standard curve was obtained over the concentration range of 1-32 mg/L with a linear regression equation,Y =0.0732X + 0.056 (r =0.992).A similar content-time curve was seen between GB suspension group and GB-SMEDDS group. The GB content was higher in GB-SMEDDS group than that in GB suspension group from 30 minutes through 12 hours after administration of drugs. The Cmax of GB-SMEDDS group and GB suspension group were(15.83±1.84) mg/g and(2.65±0.10) mg/g,the AUC0-∞ were(15.30±0.11)mg/(g· h)and(6.42±0.19)mg/(g · h).Conclusions HPLC-ESI-MS is proved to be a rapid, accurate, sensitive and suitable method for pharmocokinetic study of GB.SMEDDS can raise the concent of GB in retina, and it probably improve the bioavailability of GB.

This study was aimed to reveal current achievements and the future trend about Chinese materia medica (CMM) processing, which pointed future research direction for scholars.“CMM processing” was used as the subject term in document retrieval to the Web of Science (WoS) and CNKI. The CitespaceII and Ucinet & Netdraw were used to build mapping knowledge domains to acceptable both English and Chinese literature data. The results showed that the mapping knowledge for“CMM processing” for co-citation, source journal, author, key words and so on were established. It was concluded that the rapid present period of Chinese literature on CMM processing was earlier for around 15 years than English literature. And the total amount of English documents was much less than Chinese documents. Combing the developing process of CMM, it revealed its current achievements and future trend, which pointed future research direction for scholars, and moreover it put forward new thinking and method to summarize or expand traditional medicine and related research fields.
