Esophageal cancer is a cause of cancer mortality and accounts for the sixth most common cause of cancer-related death. The focus of recent study has shifted towards testing novel agents that target specific molecular abnormalities known to occur in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The preclinical studies involving various cancer models, including ESCC, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) over-expression, are linked to epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation and migration, and have an inverse relationship to tumor chemotherapy curability. Nimotuzumab is a humanized anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody that binds to the extracellular domain of the EGFR and inhibits EGF binding. In many phase Ⅱ trials, nimotuzumab showed marked antiproliferative, proapoptotic and antiangiogenic effects in tumors that overexpress EGFR. Some phaseⅢtrials are ongoing.

ObjectiveTo establish the mathematical model of transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) and total serum bilirubin (TSB) after phototherapy in neonates.MethodsNeonates with pathological jaundice were enrolled from October 2013 to June 2014. The neonates were divided into three groups by gestational age: full-term neonates (gestation age of 37-42 weeks), late preterm neonates (gestation age of 34-36+6 weeks), early and mid-preterm neonates (gestation age of 28-33+6 weeks). The neonates received single or double sided phototherapy. During the phototherapy, the forehead and chest were covered by opaque material. The TcB was measured at forehead, mid sternum, perineum area three times each before and after phototherapy. Mean-while the TSB was tested. Results Two hundred and sixty-one neonates with hyperbilirubinemia were enrolled, among whom there were 169 full-term neonates, 63 late preterm neonates and 29 early and mid-preterm neonates. Before phototherapy, there were signiifcantly correlation of TSB with TcB on forehead, mid sternum and perineum (r=0.813, 0.827, 0.754;P<0.001) and the best correlation was with TcB on mid sternum. The linear regression equation was TSB=1.35TcB-5.50. After phototherapy, there were signiifcantly correlateion of TSB with TcB on forehead, mid sternum, and perineum (r=0.751, 0.807, 0.683;P<0.001) and the best correlation was with TcB on mid sternum. The linear regression equation was TSB=1.01×TcB-0.62. Among three groups, the full-term neonates had the best correlation.ConclusionsAfter phototherapy, the TcB measured on mid sternum which was covered by opaque material is well correlated with TSB. The linear regression model can be established.

Objective The risk for coronary artery bypass surgery is reported to be increased with age and associated with diabetes. We examined the outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with diabetes who were older than 70 years of age and evaluate the effect of diabetes on CABG in those patients. Methods From March 2000 to March 2008, the data of 649 patients older than 70 years of age were collected retrospectively and divided into diabetic group or non-diabetic group based on pre-operative diagnosis. The blood glucose level of patients was maintained between 7.0 mmol/L ( 126mg/dl) and 10.0 mmoL/L ( 180 mg/dl) porioporatively. Stats 7.0 was used for statistical analysis. The t test and χ~2 test were used to determine the differences in the numerical variables and categorical variables respectively. Results No statistical differences were observed between the two groups in the baseline variables, such as age [ ( 74.78±3.67 ) years for diabetic group vs. ( 75.00±3.65 ) years for non-diabetic group, P = 0. 4877 ], female patients ( 34.76% vs. 29.22%, P =0. 1663 ), ejection fraction [ ( 57.02±10. 10 ) % vs. ( 58.49±10. 39 ) %, P = 0. 1004 ) ], myocardial infarction history (26.20% vs. 28.35%, P =0. 5795), though there were more left main diseases in the diabetic group (52.41% vs.26.41%, diabetic vs. non-diabetic, P = 0. 0000 ). The overall in-hospital mortality was 6.32% (8.02% in the diabetic group vs. 5.63% in the non-diabetic group, P = 0. 2571 ). The main causes of death were sudden respiratory and cardiac arrest, low cardiac output syndrome ( LCOS), malignant arrhythmia, respiratory failure, renal failure, central nervous system compli-cations, and multiple organ failure. Major post-operative complications were bleeding, atrial fibrillation, plural effusion and pulmonary infection. Post-operative variables, such as EF (0.59±0. 13 in the diabetic group vs. 0. 61±0.15 in the non-dia-betie group, P =0. 1807), re-revascularization due to bleeding (2. 14% vs. 4.76%, P = 0. 1232), blood transfusion (89.84% vs. 84.63%, P = 0.0820) and the administration of vasoactive agent (21.93% vs. 27.71%, P= 0. 1286),were found no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion Conclusions The early outcomes of CABG in aged patients are acceptable. The surgical consequences in diabetic patients may be similar to those in non-diabetic patients.

Objective To localize the sinoatrial node (SAN) of the newborn rabbits in vivo and cut it for purifying cultivation and study the morophologic characters of primary cultured pacemaker cells of SAN under light microscope and transmissional electron microscope. Methods Hearts of the newborn rabbits were embedded in paraffin for HE-staining and observed the location, form of SAN under optical microscope; SAN cells isolated from neonatal rabbits cultured and purified with the method of differential attachment and BrdU-treatment.Results SAN localized in the anterior wall of the superior vena cava and the posterior-lateral atrial wall. There was about 0.32 mm between its lowest point and sulcus terminalis. Three distinctly different types of cells were observed among the cultured cells of SAN: spindle, araneiform and polygon. The spindle cells covered the greatest proportion of the cultured cells of SAN (59.6%?7.3%). The frequency of spontaneous contraction of spindle cells was the highest among the constrcting cells (145 ?9)time/min. The results of ultrastructure observation showed that myofibrils and other organelles in spindle cells were poorly organized and significantly decreased in number compared with araneiform cells. There was no significant difference between araneiform cells isolated from SAN and from atrial muscle. Conclusion Among the cultured cells from neonatal rabbits SAN, the spindle cells are the pacemaker cells of SAN.

In this paper, five different methods were carried out for DNA extraction directly from soil. The result shows that all five methods could generate DNA with more than 15 kb in size. They were subsequently used as templates for PCR amplification with success, using primers of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and Shiva-1 gene encoding an antibacterial peptide. However, method 5 is more suitable for DNA extraction directly from a small amount of soil sample as it produced a good yield of DNA in high integrity with reliable reproducibility.
