OBJECTIVETo study the effects of Citalopram on the mRNA expression of bax and bel-2 in frontal cortical neurons and on cell apoptosis of rats after stress.

METHODSTwenty-four healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 8). The control group did no receive any treatment, the stress group was subject to stress and given normal saline and experimental group was given Citalopram irrigation stomach after stress. Rats were forced to swim to establish chronic stress model (15 min/d, 4 weeks), bax, bcl-2 mRNA expression were tested by in situ hybridization technique (ISH), TUNEL assay was used to determine cell apoptosis, Nikon image analysis software were used to measure the number of positive cells in each index.

RESULTSCompared with the control group, the stress group showed a larger number of bax mRNA expressing cells( P < 0.01), a smaller number of bcl-2 mRNA expressing cells (P < 0.01), and the staining intensity of positive cells was significantly reduced( P < 0.01). Compared with the stress group, the experiment group showed more reduced number of bax mRNA positive cells( P < 0.01) and significantly increased bcl-2 mRNA positive cells( P < 0.05), a small amount of positive cells were found, compared with that in the stress group, nuclear condensation in the experimental group was reduced significantly and the staining was obviously weaker( P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONCitalopram significantly antagonizes bax mRNA and potentiatesbcl-2 mRNA protein expression and inhibits apoptosis of rat prefrontal cortical neurons caused by chronic stress, which might be one possible mechanism of Citalopram for prevention and treatment of psychosis caused by chronic stress.

Objective To explore the significance of surgical resection for the pineal region tumor,the extent of tumor resection,the surgical approaches and treatment measures of hydrocephalus.Methods Twentythree patients diagnosed of pineal region cancer were recruited for this study.Thirteen patients received ventriculo-peritoneal shunt(V-P),during which 7 cases received intraoperative end-plate colostomy.Two of the 13 cases received a second V-P procedure.Another 13 cases received operation by corpus callosum- septum-Dome Room-the third ventricle approach to remove the tumor; Eight cases underwent the tumor resection by suboccipital supratentorial approach (Poppen approach )and 2 cases underwent the tumor resection by the infratentorial cerebellar approach( Krause approach).Results Total tumor resection was performed in 11 cases,subtotal or major total resection in 8 cases and partial resection in 4 cases.Nine cases underwent postoperative radiotherapy alone,8 receiving radiotherapy plus chemotherapy,and 6 cases receiving neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy.Two cases died during treatment.Conclusion Though it is not practicable to completely remove the germ cell tumor in patients with relatively large tumors,cerebrospinal fluid circulation pathways should be reestablished,including ventriculo-peritoneal shunt,colostomy from the end of the third ventricle to the end plate.If tumors are not too large,they would be easy to be removed.The effects on the surrounding brain tissue would not be much significant.If the connection of Ⅲ,V ventricles were normal,the patient may not need shunt or colostomy.Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be given to this kind of patients after the surgery.To improve the efficacy,other types of tumors,expecially the benign tumors,should be totally removed.

Objective To find out whether people in Xinzhou Shanxi know the hazard of both iodine deficiency disorders and drinking-water-borne endemic tluorosis,in Xinzhou Shanxi and to promote people actively participate in prevention of the diseases and to achieve a sustainable development of health education in endemic diseases.Methods Ningwu,Baode,Kelan and Jingle Counties were selected to carry out the.health education program of iodine deficiency disorders and Wutai,Xinfu and Fanshi counties were selected to carry out the health education project of drinking-water-borne endemic fluorosis in Xinzhou City Shanxi Province in 2011.To carry out the base line questionnaire survey,in the beginning and at the end of the project,three townships from each county were chosen,and one primary school was selected from each chosen township,15 housewives were selected from each chosen township and 30 fifth grade students were selected from each primary school.Results ① The baseline survey:a total of 366 pupils of grade 5 and 183 housewives were investigated,and the awareness rate of iodine deficiency disorders was 77.41％ (850/1098) and 80.33％ (441/549),respectively; a total of 270 pupils of grade 5 and 138 housewives were investigated,and the awareness rate of drinking-water-borne endemic fluorosis was 80.74％ (654/810) and 81.40％ (337/414),respectively; ② The effect evaluation:a total of 366 pupils of grade 5 and 181 housewives were investigated,and the awareness rates of iodine deficiency disorders were 91.62％ (1006/1098) and 92.45％ (502/543),which were compared with that of baseline investigation,and the awareness rates were improved significantly (x2 =84.69,34.04,all P ＜ 0.01); a total of 270 pupils of grade 5 and 138 housewives were investigated,awareness rates of drinking-water-borne endemic fluorosis were 93.95％ (761/810) and 93.48％(387/414),which were compared with that of baseline survey,and the awareness rates were improved significantly(x2 =63.94,27.47,all P ＜ 0.01).Conclusions After implementation of health education project on endemic diseases,the self-protection awareness of the fifth grade students and housewives is promoted effectively,awareness of prevention knowledge on endemic diseases is raised,which lays a foundation for controlling and eliminating the endemic diseases.

AIM: In order to explore the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC), an experimental colitis in mouse was induced by the hapten dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), and the activity of leukocyte migration inhibitory factor (LMIF) was measured at the same time. METHODS: 67 BALB/c mice were randomly divided into control (60% ethanol) and DNCB groups. After they were sensitized by smearing 3.3% DNCB on the abdominal skin, they were challenged with DNCB at concentration of 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4% respectively by instillation once a day. The weight, stool viscosity and hematochezia were observed and accumulated as disease active index (DAI) score. The pathological changes in colon tissue were judged macropathologically and by means of microscope. LMIF activity was determined by the absorbance (A) of migrated leukocytes. RESULTS: Compared to control group, the increases in DAI accumulate score, pathologic score, and LMIF activity in DNCB groups were observed. CONCLUSION: Mouse colitis was induced by DNCB, which was accompanied by an increase in LMIF activity. [
