AIM: To compare the clinical results of suture method and partial eyelash resection treating for pediatric eyelid trichiasis, and screen an effective method for the treatment of pediatric lower eyelid trichiasis.
METHODS: Fifty-six cases of pediatric patients with lower eyelid trichiasis were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group in accordance with the method of drawing lots, and each group was 28 cases. The control group was treated with suture method, and the observation group was treated with partial eyelash resection. The clinical efficacy, patient satisfaction before and after treatment, and the incidence of complications were compared.
RESULTS:(1) The clinically total effective rate was 74%of the control group, which was 89% of the observation group, and there were statistical differences of the clinical efficacy between the two groups ( P<0. 05 ); ( 2 ) the satisfaction scores were (3. 89±1. 22) points and (6. 27±1-86) points of the the control group before and after treatment, which were ( 4. 00±1. 34 ) points and ( 8-95±2-34) points of the observation group, and there were statistical differences of the two groups before and after treatment (P<0. 05), and the scores of the observation group were higher than that of the control group ( P<0-05);(3) complications such as swelling and stitches off appeared in both groups, and the rate was 21% in the control group, which was 11% in the observation group, and there were statistical differences between the two groups (P<0. 05).
CONCLUSION: The treatment of children with lower eyelid trichiasis, suture method is simple and can be performed under local anesthesia in collaboration with children, but with a higher relapse rate, some patients required reoperation;partial resection of eyelashes can be more thoroughly solve the problem of pediatric eyelid trichiasis with low recurrence rate, but children need to be under general anesthesia with some of big risk. So partial resection of eyelashes is unsuitable for using in clinical practice widely and can be used in special cases.

Objective:To study the change of bifrontal metabolite concentration in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and its relationship with substantia alba demyelination using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) combined with linear combination of model (LCModel) quantitative technique. Methods:From May 2016 to December 2018, 25 patients with MCI (group A; 12 males, 13 females, age (60.5±5.2) years) and 15 healthy control subjects (group B; 6 males, 9 females, age (59.5±3.5) years) in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College were prospectively enrolled. The MCI patients were classified into 2 subgroups according to MRI results: group A1 with substantia alba demyelination (7 males, 4 females, age (62.1±3.9) years) and group A2 without substantia alba demyelination (5 males, 9 females, age (59.2±5.8) years). Software LCModel was used to quantitatively analyze the MRS original data and measure the absolute concentration of N-acetylaspartate compound (NAA), creatine compound (Cr), choline-containing compound (Cho), myoinositol (mI) and ratios of NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr, mI/Cr, NAA/mI in bilateral frontal lobe. Independent-sample t test was used to analyze the inter-group differences of the above parameters, while Pearson correlation analysis was performed to analyze correlations between the above parameters and cognitive function scores. Results:Compared with group B, group A had higher mI of both left and right frontal lobes (left: (5.19±1.28) vs (4.32±0.83), right: (4.87±1.11) vs (3.85±0.98); t values: 2.34, 2.93, both P<0.05); the mI/Cr of right frontal lobe in group A was also higher (1.19±0.31 vs 0.98±0.25; t=2.21, P<0.05), while the NAA/mI of right frontal lobe was lower (1.37±0.34 vs 1.78±0.47; t=-3.16, P<0.01). Differences of other parameters between group A and group B, and those between group A1 and group A2 were not significantly different ( t values: -1.70 to 1.35, all P>0.05). The mI of right frontal lobe was negatively correlated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score( r values: -0.35, -0.38, both P<0.05), on the contrary, NAA/mI of right frontal lobe was positively correlated with the cognitive function scores ( r values: 0.43, 0.40, both P<0.05). Conclusion:MCI may be related to the loss or dysfunction of neurons in the right frontal lobe, and MRS can provide theoretical basis for early recognition of MCI to some extent.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) gene polymorphism and aerobic endurance.
METHODSThe (CA)n repeats polymorphism genotypes in HSL intro 6 of 123 outstanding long distance runners and 127 controls of Han nationality in northern China were analyzed by PCR and Fluorescence labeled STR-genescan. Repeat polymorphisms were grouped according to segmentation point and alleles were divided into long or short chains. Chi-square test was used to analyze the frequency difference of allelic and genotypic between athlete and control groups.
RESULTS(CA) n repeats polymorphism in HSL gene was total of 9 different repeat number of alleles, which composed of 25 different genotypes. The chi-square test result showed that when compared short and long chain alleles split by 4, there was a significant difference (P <0.05) of genotype distribution in 5/10 km group compared with control. Compared the rest groups with control, there was no significant difference.
CONCLUSIONCompared short and long chain alleles split by 4, the LL genotype of (CA)n of HSL was associated with aerobic endurance and it might be a molecular marker of elite 5/10 km long distance runners.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can not only differentiate into multiple nonhematopoietic cell lineages, but seek out damaged tissues and repair them as well. Hence, they were largely studied for their potential clinical use. However, their biological characteristics have not been fully discovered. OBJECTIVE: To compare the biological characteristics of BMSCs of different species cultured in vitro, in order to provide basis for the clinical research of stem cell therapy.DESIGN: Randomized controlled observation was designed.SETTING: Medical Research Department of General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Area.MATERIALS: The experiment was performed in Medical Research Department of General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Area from June 2004 to July 2005. Thirty SD rats weighing (160±20) g, aged 35 to 40 days, 30 Kunming mice weighing (16.0±2.0) g, aged about 40 days, 8 New Zealand white rabbits weighing (2.0±0.2) kg, aged 80 to 90 days and 10 healthy volunteers (25-32 years old) were selected. All the animals were of clean grade, which were purchased from the Animal Center of Southern Medical University.METHODS: The BMSCs of mice and rats were prepared according to the protocol developed in the Caplan laboratory, while those of rabbits and human were isolated from bone marrow suspension obtained by iliac puncture. The morphology of BMSCs was observed by light microscope and transmission electron microscope. Cell growth curve was tested by MTT. Expression of Stro-1 was analyzed by immunofluorescence cytochemistry and flow cytometry. To evaluate the specific response of BMSCs to osteogenic supplements(10 nmol/L dexamethasone, 10 mmol/L β-glycerophosphate,and 50 mg/L ascorbic acid), the activity of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity was tested by a commercial kit. Expression of osteocalcin was examined by immunocytochemistry and hydroxyapatite crystals were shown by von Kossa staining. Adipogenic differentiation was evaluated by estimating percent of cells containing Oil Red-O- stained oil droplets.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Morphological observation and growth situation of BMSCs. ② Expression of Stro-1: BMSC marker. ③ Differentiation in osteogenic medium.RESULTS: ①The morphology of adherent BMSCs ofthose four species observed by optic microscopy was obviously different. When they became mature or aged, the mouse cells turned into flat shape, irregularly polygonal, fell to pieces and deposited on the flask-bottom, while the rat, rabbit and human cells would enlarge and become polygonal, vacuoles would appear in their cytoplasm, finally, the cells were detached from the flask-bottom, floating off like cotton wool. The cultures of different species also had some commonness, such as poly-layer growing manner, without contact inhibition and consisting of two groups. Cells of one group grew into colonies from single cells and expanded quickly, while cells of the other group were sporadic and did not proliferate. Electron microscopy revealed that all of the primary cells had microvilli and that they could be divided into two subpopulations according to their ultrastructures. Some cells were rich in organelles and most chromatin was euchromatin, while the other subpopulation cells had much fewer organelles and more heterochromatin. Growth curves of BMSCs of different species were almost the same. ② The positive rate of human adherent bone marrow-derived cells for Stro-1: BMSC marker was (91.4±8.3) %, and that of mouse adherent cells was (83.5±6.2) % .③Treated with osteogenic supplements, mouse BMSCs differentiated into adipose tissue, rabbit ones died, while rat and human ones differentiated into osteocytes. BMSCs also demonstrated spontaneous differentiation in vitro.CONCLUSION: Mouse, rat, rabbit and human BMSCs can be easily expanded in vitro, although the harvest of the current method is a mixture of mesenchymal cells with various maturities, most of which are poor-differen-tiated cells. BMSCs of those species are different in morphology and response to the same inductive supplements. Therefore, in order to establish a kind of stem cell therapy, it is necessary not only for evidence from animal experiments but for that from human experiments as well.

AIM:To investigate the role of minocycline on glutamate uptake in the periventricular zone and its putative mechanism after hypoxic exposure in neonatal rats.METHODS: A model of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) was developed by putting postnatal 1 d rat pups in 5%O2 for 3.5 h.The glutamate level in periventricular zone was measured by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry assay ( LC-MS/MS) after hypoxic exposure for 4 h and 1 d.The dynamic changes of glutamate transporters EAAT1, and EAAT2 during developmental period in periventricular zone were determined by Western blot. Moreover, the expression of EAAT1, EAAT2, Iba-1, IL-1β, TNF-αand TGF-β1 was also detected by Western blot after hypoxic exposure for 4 h and 1 d in that region. The effects of mino-cycline on all parameters mentioned above were tested after minocycline treatment at the same time points and in the same region.RESULTS:After hypoxic exposure, glutamate level was increased, but it was decreased after minocycline treat-ment.EAAT1 and EAAT2 kept a low expression level at the first postnatal week, but a predominant elevation was found at the end of the second postnatal week. The expression of EAAT1, EAAT2, Iba-1, IL-1βand TGF-β1 was increased at 1 d after hypoxic exposure.EAAT1 and TNF-αexpression was significantly up-regulated, while EAAT2 was down-regulated af-ter minocycline treatment.CONCLUSION: Minocycline inhibits the increase in the glutamate level after hypoxia in periventricular region of the neonatal rats. The mechanism may relate to the selective regulation of glutamate transporters, rather than the inhibition of neuroinflammation in periventricular zone.
