ObjectiveTo investigate current iodine nutritional status of different groups of people in Harbin city, and to provide the basis for development of salt iodization standard and scientific iodine supplementation.MethodsThree urban districts and three surrounding counties were chosen in Harbin,2011.In each chosen urban district and county, one district office (township) was selected, and one residents committee (village) was chosen in each of the district office(township),and 30 households were selected by systematic sampling.Iodized salt, water iodine and iodine intake per capita were investigated. In each of the residents committee (village),20 adults aged 18 - 45,30 pregnant women or lactating women, and 100 school children aged 8 - 10 were selected.Urine samples were collected and urinary iodine level were tested.Salt iodine was determined by direct titration, water and urinary iodine by arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry.Iodine uptake and iodine nutritional status of different populations in Harbin urban and rural areas were compared.ResultsThe edible rate of qunlified iodized salt were 93.3%(84/90) and 96.3%(156/162) in Harbin urban and rural residents, respectively, which were all greater than 90%,and the highest value of salt iodine were 38.3,46.0 mg/kg,respectively,in urban and rural areas, which all did not exceed the upper limit(50 mg/kg) of qualified iodized salt, but there were some samples of salt iodine content below the national standard(20 mg/kg).Water iodine value in urban and rural areas, even the highest value(9.40,8.40 μg/L),was failed to meet the national standard 10 μg/L; salt eaten by rural people perperson a day(8.33 g) was significantly higher than that of the urban people(7.03 g,Z=- 2.750,P < 0.01); in addition to rural children aged 8 - 10,whose urinary iodine value(228.6 μg/L) was higher, the values in urban and rural adults ( 111.3,195.6 μg/L),pregnant women ( 193.0,172.9 μg/L),lactating women ( 128.4,173.7 μg/L)and urban children ( 186.8 μg/L ) were all in appropriate level. The urinary iodine medians ( 195.6,228.6 μg/L )of adults and children in rural were significantly higher than that of urban adults and children(111.3,186.8 μg/L,Z =- 2.294,- 5.434,P < 0.05 or < 0.01,respectively).Population composition of iodine deficiency in both urban and rural adults, lactating and pregnant women[46.7%(28/60),21.6%(13/60) ; 21.1%(19/90),21.3% (18/89) ; 27.8% ( 25/90 ),42.2% (38/90) ] were significantly higher than that of the population composition with iodine excess[4.6%(4/60),5.0%(3/60) ; 16.7%(15/90),16.9%(15/89) ; 4.4%(4/90),0.0%(0/90)],but proportion of iodine excessive population in rural children [26.3%(79/300)] was significantly higher than proportion of iodine deficiency[5.6%(17/300)].ConclusionsThe natural environment of Harbin city is still in the iodinedeficient state. In addition to children in rural areas, the iodine intake and iodine nutrition level is basically appropriate; the risk of disease caused by iodine deficiency in adults, lactating and pregnant women is higher than by iodine excess, but the situation of children in rural is on the opposite. Therefore,we should strengthen the monitoring of different populations, and supplement iodine scientifically based on their need.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of Qinghuang Powder (QHP) combined Chinese herbs for Pi-strengthening and Shen-reinforcing (CHPSSR) on hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha (HIF-1alpha) in bone marrow mononuclear cells of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients.
METHODSChanges of HIF-1alpha in bone marrow mononuclear cells of MDS patients were detected in 25 MDS patients treated by QHP combined CHPSSR using flow cytometry. Meanwhile, 13 healthy subjects were recruited as the control group. Changes HIF-1alpha levels in various serial bone marrow mononuclear cells were detected.
RESULTS(1) Among the 25 patients in the treatment group, there were 19 patients effective and 6 patients ineffective, with the total effective rate being 76%. (2) Compared with before treatment, levels of peripheral blood WBC, Hb, PLT, and ANC significantly increased in the treatment group after treatment, showing statistical difference (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). (3) Compared with before treatment, the HIF-1alpha mean fluorescence intensity was enhanced in bone marrow lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, and nucleated red blood cells of the treatment group after treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the HIF-1alpha mean fluorescence intensity was weakened in bone marrow lymphocytes, monocytes, and nucleated red blood cells of the treatment group before treatment; while it was obviously enhanced in granulocytes (P < 0.01). But after treatment the HIF-1alpha mean fluorescence intensity increased more in the granulocytes of the treatment group than in those of the control group (P < 0.01), but there was no statistical difference in bone marrow lymphocytes, monocytes, or nucleated red blood cells.
CONCLUSIONQHP combined CHPSSR could improve HIF-1alpha levels in bone marrow lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, and nucleated red blood cells of MDS patients, thus improving Hb levels of MDS patients, and improving their anemia and correlated symptoms.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2003;0(09):-
Aim The pharmacodynamics and mechanism of Kadsura heteroclita on the Alzheimers disease (AD) model mice were studied. Methods The Kunming mice were treated with D-galactose and AlCl 3(90 d)to make the AD animal model. The therapy groups were treated with HS 2 (po, 40 d) respectively since d51. The Morris water-maze test, the expressions of PS1, BACE, as well as the pathological observation of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex were carried out to evaluate the effect of HS 2 on the AD model mice. Resluts By oral administration with HS 2, the capacity of learning and memory of the AD model mice was improved. HS 2 can downregulate the expression of PS1, BACE and decrease the amount of senile plaque in their brains. Conclusion HS 2 can meliorate AD model mice's learning and memory deficiency as well as decrease the mRNA content of PS1, BACE and senile plaque in their brains.

BackgroundOsteopontin is highly expressed in many metastatic tumors, but its expression in uveal melanoma and the relationship of osteopontin with metastasis is still under investigation. Objective This study was to investigate the relationship between osteopontin expression and uveal melanoma metastatic potential. Methods Fifty samples of uveal melanoma were collected in Beijing Tongren Hospital. The expressions of osteopontin in the samples were detected using immunohistochemistry, and expressions of osteopontin mRNA in different metastatic potential uveal melanoma cell lines (MU M-2B,C918,OCM-1A) were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR).ResultsOsteopontin was positively expressed in 10 samples of 13 patients with metastasis and 14 samples of 37 patients without metastasis, showing a significant difference between them (x2=5.888,P=0.000).There were 11 samples and 13 samples exhibiting the positive expression of osteopontin in 15 epithelial type and 35 non-epithelial type of uveal melanoma respectively with the significant difference (x2=5.510,P =0.000).The positive expressing numbers of osteopontin were 20 tumors of 30 affected tumors and 4 tumors of 20unaffected ciliary tumors with the significant difference (x2 =10.470,P =0.000 ).No significant differences in the expression of osteopontige were found between different gender, age, eyes, largest basal diameters and invasion of scleral canal( P =0.536,0.256,0.802,0.848,0.555 ).The relative expression value of osteopontin mRNA was in turn 1.00±0.04,0.91 ±0.03,0.08±0.01 in MUM-2B,C918,OCM-1A with the significant difference among three cell lines( F=33.135,P<0.05).The osteopontige mRNA expression was significant enhanced in high metastatic potentialcell lines( MUM-2B,C918 ) compared with low metastatic potential cell lines( OCM-1 A) (P<0.05 ),but no significant difference was seen between two high metastatic potential cell lines(MUM-2B,C918) (P=0.804).Conclusions Osteopontige expression is associated with the uveal melanoma cell line invasion and metastasis potential. These results imply that osteopontige expression maybe an indicator of uveal melanoma invasion and metastasis ability.

Background Metadherin is a newly discovered oncogene. It is highly expressed in some solid tumors and plays a significant role in invasion and metastasis of neoplasm as an important biological marker of aggressive cancers. However, there is little data available for the relationship between metadherin expression and clinicopathologic features of retinoblastoma(RB).Objective This study was to investigate the expression of the metadherin in RB cell lines and specimens as well as its clinical significance. Methods The expression of metadherin mRNA in different metastatic potential of RB cell lines(Y79,WERI-RB1 and SO-RB50)was detected by real-time PCR,and the protein expression of metadherin (MDTH)in paraffin-embedded RB tissue was detected by immunohistochemistry. The relevance of metadherin expression to clinical histopathological features was statistically analyzed. Results The relative expression value of metadherin mRNA was 6.11±0.17,6.21±0.21 and 3.97±0.17 in Y79,SORB50,WERI-RB1,respectively,with a significant difference among the three types of cell lines(F =142.643,P<0.05).The relative expression value of metadherin mRNA was significantly higher in Y79 or SO-RB50 than that in W ERI-RB1 (P=0.000).The expression of MTDH protein mostly located in the cellular membrane and cytoplasm.Among the 54 RB sections,35 (64.81%)showed a high intensity in expression of metadherin protein. The total score of metadherin protein expression was higher in the E stage of RB than that of D stage(P=0.035),in the patients with high-risk factor than those without high-risk factor(P=0.002)and the cases with optic nerve invasion compared to non-invasion (P=0.017).However,no significant differences were found in the expression of metadherin protein between different ages (P =0.579),different genders (P =0.513),bilateral eyes (P =0.305),different disease courses (P=0.860),various types of differentiation (P =0.537),different degree of the ehoroid invasion (P =0.238),and with or without invasion of the anterior ocular segment (P =0.579).Conclusions Metadherin appears to be highly expressed in RB cells. The activation of the MTDH gene is associated with invasion and metastasis of RB.These results imply that the dynamic change of metadherin expression probably is a prognostic indicator of RB.
