Objective To investigate the changes of umbilical adiponectin(APN) levels in newborn whose mothers with gestational impaired glucose tolerance (GIGT).Methods Eighteen neonates of GIGT pregnancies and 50 controls of normal glucose tolerance (NGT) pregnancies were studied.APN concentration was qualified in the umbilical vein serum with radioimmunoassay methods.Capillary blood glucose was measured at the first hour after delivery.Results Umbilical APN level in the GIGT group was significantly higher than that in NGT group [(61.06?16.85)mg/L vs(48.04?15.47)mg/L,t=2.38 P0.05).Conclusions Umbilical serum APN levels are elevated in newborns of GIGT mo-thers.This may be due to the dysregulation of serum APN levels associate with GIGT pregnancy.More attention shall be paid to the metabolic changes of GIGT mothers and their offspring.

Objective To evaluate clinical effects of single-dose intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy for the treatment of refractory bladder cancer after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBt). Methods A retrospective analysis was made on clinical data of 12 cases of refractory bladder cancer treated by single-dose intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy after TURBt from November 1999 to June 2005. The bladder tumor was resected as thoroughly as possible. Postoperatively, a bilateral internal iliac arteriography was made by using the Seldinger technique. The tumor vessels and normal blood supply were identified through the intubation of the right femoral artery. Half dose of chemotherapeutics (epirubicin 25 mg) was infused into both internal iliac artery, then tumor vessels of bladder was selected and infused with peripheral embolization agent (a mix of fragmented gelatin sponge and cisplatin 200 mg). The embolization agent was used repeatedly until all tumor vessels were embolized. Intravesical instillation with epirubicin was carried out postoperatively, and cystoscopy was performed every 3 months after operation. Results After intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy, there were 12 cases of nausea and anepithymia, 3 cases of vomiting, and 2 cases of fever, all of which were symptomatically relieved with expectant treatment. Mild hip pain occurred in 6 cases and subsided in 3~5 days. Decreased erythrocyte and leucocyte were restored to normal levels in 2 weeks. Liver and renal functions did not present marked changes. Follow-up was conducted for 4~55 months (mean, 34 months). There were 1 case of recurrence at 32 postoperative month and 11 cases of progression free survival. Conclusions This technique lowers the recurrent rate of refractory bladder cancer and the incidence of side effects, being a new alternative for patients who are not willing to receive total cystectomy.

Background Postoperative endophthalmitis following intraocular lens(IOL)implantation is still one of the most feared complications of cataract surgery.Bacterial adhesion to IOLs during their insertion is a prominent etiological factor.The adhesion characteristics of bacteria to IOL are very vital for the prevention of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery.Objective The present study was to observe the in vitro adherence ability of Staphylococcus epidermidis to different intraocular lenses(IOLs)and compare the results in bacterial counting between scanning electron microscopy(SEM)photographs and quantitative cultures. Methods Five types of IOLs,including hydrophobic acrylic IOL,polymethylmethaerylate(PMMA)IOL,heparin-surface-modified(HSM) PMMA IOL,silicone(SI)IOL and hydrophilic acrylic IOL,were put into S.epidermidis(ATCC 12228)suspension for 1 hour.The bacterial adhesion numbers on the IOL surfaces were counted by quantitative cultures and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) photographs. Results Quantitative culture counting of viable adherent bacteria released by sonication showed that hydrophobic acrylic IOL and PMMA IOL were more likely for bacteria to attach.The number of bacteria on the five types of IOL surfaces showed significant differences(F=100.084,P=0.000).No significant differences were found in the number of bacteria between hydrophilic acrylic IOL and HSM-PMMA IOL (t=2.285,P=0.052)with the quantitative culture method.Direct counting of adherent bacteria in SEM photographs revealed that there were significant differences in bacterial adhesion numbers among difierent IOL material groups,with the numbers from high to low as follows:Hydrophobic IOL＞PMMA IOL＞SI IOL＞Hydrophilic IOL＞HSM-PMMA IOL(F=118.065,P=0.000).The counting method by SEM method was superior to that by quantitative cultures (t=5.019,P=0.000). Conclusion The bacterial adhesion ability varies upon the difference of IOL materials.Less bacterial adhesion is found on hydrophilic acrylic IOL and HSM-PMMA IOL,implying that the use of IOLs made from these two materials during surgery could diminish the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis and intraocular inflammation associated with IOLs implantation.

AIM:To investigate the inhibitory effects of recombinant human Mullerian inhibiting substance on cell proliferation in human ovarian carcinoma cells (OVCAR8 and SKOV3 cell lines). METHODS:The expression of MISIIR protein and the localization of MISIIR protein were analyzed by Western blotting and confocal spectral microscopy,respectively. Cell apoptosis and cell cycle were detected by flow cytometry (FCM). Cell viability was determined via MTT method. Clone formation test was used to detect oncogenicity in vitro.RESULTS:The MISIIR protein expression in OVCAR8 cells but not in SKOV3 cells was observed. MISIIR expression was seen on the OVCAR8 cell surface and in the cytoplasm with both antibodies. After treated with rhMIS for 48 h,the cell viability was significantly decreased in OVCAR8 cells. rhMIS inhibited the oncogenicity of OVCAR8 cells greatly. The cell apoptosis of OVCAR8 cell exposed to 10 mg/L rhMIS was (31.3±2.1)%,and OVCAR8 cells in the G_1 phase were increased by (70.4±3.0)%. Compared to SKOV3 cells the differences were significant (P<0.01). CONCLUSION:Recombinant human Mullerian inhibiting substance suppresses the growth of MISIIR-positive ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. We predict that rhMIS might be a new target to treat human ovarian malignancies.

Objective:To study the preventive and health effects of Ampelopsis grossedentata on hyperlipidemia. Method:Thirty Wistar rats were divided into three groups:control group, model group and test group. The control group was fed normal diet, while the model and test groups were fed high fat diet.The control and model group were given water while the test group was given water with 20% Ampelopsis grossedentata for 15 w. Serum lipids, hemorrheological indices, myocardial enzymes and IL-6 were measured. Results: At the end of experiment, serum TC, TG, LDL-C, and apoB/apoA, serum and myocardial MDA, myocardial enzymes activities, hemorrheological indices and serum IL-6 were obviously higher in model group while the activities of serum and myocardial SOD and GSH-Px were lower. In test group. serum TC, TG and apoB/apoA levels, serum and myocardial MDA, myocardial enzymes activities, hemorrheological indices, and serum IL-6 were significantly lower than those in model group, but HDL-C, SOD and GSH-Px activities higher. Conclusion:Ampelopsis grossedentata could significantly decrease blood lipids and hemorrheological indices of rats fed with high fat diet, and protect myocardial cells fromoxidation, and as a result to prevent hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease.
