Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular malignant tumor in early childhood, which has an adverse effect not only on the eyesight, but also on patients’ life. Uveal melanoma (UM) is an another common intraocular malignant tumor in adults, nearly half of the patients will have metastasis of tumor with a low survival rate. The long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-coding RNA with a length greater than 200 nt. More and more studies have confirmed that lncRNAs are involved in the proliferation, migration and invasion of tumors by regulating the gene expression at various levels, which makes lncRNAs become the novel target in the therapy of intraocular malignant tumors. This article reviewed studies of the roles and mechanisms of lncRNAs in RB and UM.

OBJECTIVEAsthma is considered as a typical psychosomatic disease. This study aimed to investigate the temperament of asthmatic children and risk factors for asthma.
METHODSTemperamental type and dimensionality were investigated by Carry Temperament Scale in 106 children with asthma. Logistic regression analysis was used to study the risk factors for the development of asthma. One hundred and six age and sex-matched normal children served as controls.
RESULTSThere were significant differences in the adaptability, mood value and attention persistence of temperament between asthmatic patients and normal controls. Higher proportion of inter-high difficult temperamental type (17.0% vs 5.7%) and lower proportion of easy temperamental type (16.0% vs 29.2%) were found in children with asthma when compared with controls (P < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that the frequency of cold between 3 and 7 years old, allergic history, idiosyncratic physique, parental history of asthma, house decoration and mood value and attention persistence of temperament were risk factors for the development of asthma.
CONCLUSIONSThere were differences in the temperamental type and dimensionality between asthmatic children and normal controls. Children with inter-high difficult temperament and suffered from the above risk factors showed a higher risk for developing asthma.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the impact of experimental varicocele (EV) on the ipsilateral testis in rats.
METHODSEV was induced by partial ligation of the left renal vein in male SD rats, the control rats subjected to sham operation, and the testes of the EV models and controls were extirpated 6, 12, and 18 weeks later. Johnson's score, ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules, intratesticular testosterone concentration (ITC) and germ cell apoptotic index (AI) of each left testis were evaluated.
RESULTSJohnson's scores were (6.92 +/- 0.52), (4.83 +/- 0.41) and (2.95 +/- 0.26), ITCswere (6.32 +/- 0.85), (5.17 +/- 0.76) and (4.11 +/- 0.69) and AIs were (5.32 +/- 1.23), (15.21 +/- 0.97) and (21.13 +/- 1.12) respectively in the 6 w , 12 w and 18 w EV groups, significantly lower than in the corresponding control groups, (9.56 +/- 0.35, 9.63 +/- 0.31, 9.39 +/- 0.46), (9.64 +/- 1.23, 9.38 +/- 0.69, 9.73 +/- 0.49) and (3.21 +/- 1.15, 3.43 +/- 1.21, 3.61 +/- 1. 15) (P < 0.05), the former two showing a gradual decline while the latter a significant elevation with the increasing duration of varicocele. The damage to the ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules was aggravated with the prolonging of varicocele.
CONCLUSIONEV can cause a progressive decline of ITC, dyszoospermia and increased AI of germ cells.

Background: In the era of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in treating ascending-type nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is under-evaluated. This study was to compare the efficacy of NACT followed by IMRT (NACT + RT) with the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) on ascending-type NPC.Methods: Clinical data of 214 patients with ascending-type NPC treated with NACT + RT or CCRT between December 2009 and July 2011 were analyzed. Of the 214 patients, 98 were treated with NACT followed by IMRT, and 116 were treated with CCRT. The survival rates were assessed using Kaplan –Meier analysis, and the survival curves were compared using a log-rank test. Results: The 4-year overall survival, locoregional failure-free survival, distant failure-free survival, and failure-free survivalrates were not significantly different between the two groups (all P > 0.05). However, patients in the CCRT group exhibited more severe acute adverse events than did patients in the NACT + RT group during radiotherapy, including leukopenia (30.2% vs. 15.3%, P = 0.016), neutropenia (25.9% vs. 11.2%, P = 0.011), and mucositis (57.8% vs. 40.8%, P = 0.028). After radiotherapy, patients in the CCRT group exhibited significantly higher rates of xerostomia (21.6% vs.10.2%, P = 0.041) and hearing loss (17.2% vs. 6.1%, P = 0.023).Conclusions: The treatment outcomes of the NACT + RT and CCRT groups were similar; however, CCRT led to higher rates of acute and late toxicities. NACT + RT may therefore be a better treatment strategy for ascending-type NPC.

OBJECTIVE:
To determine the effect of different doses of atorvastatin on the serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecules-1 (sICAM-1) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
METHODS:
The study consisted of 38 patients with unstable angina and 10 patients with old infarction who underwent elected PCI for stenotic lesions of the coronary artery. Patients were randomly assigned to either aggressive group or conventional one. After PCI the patients took atorvastatin 20 mg per day or 10 mg per day. Blood lipid profile was examined before, and 3 months after the PCI. SICAM-1 was examined before the PCI, 48 hours and 3 months after the PCI.
RESULTS:
The total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol 3 months after the PCI in the 2 groups were lower than those before the PCI (P<0.01). The aggressive group showed greater reduction in concentrations of TC and LDL-C than the conventional group (P<0.01). The changes in concentrations of HDL-C between pre-PCI and 3 months after the PCI and TG were not obvious (P>0.05). sICAM-1 in the 2 groups 48 hours after the PCI significantly higher than that before the PCI (P<0.01). But sICAM-1 in the 2 groups 3 months after the PCI significantly lower than that before the PCI (P<0.01 or P<0.05). The aggressive group showed greater reduction than the conventional group (P<0.01). TC and LDL-C were positively correlated with sICAM-1(r=0.2413, r=0.2691, all P<0.05).
CONCLUSION
Atorvastatin 20 mg per day reduces TC, LDL-C, and sICAM-1 to a greater extent than atorvastatin 10 mg per day. The effect on sICAM-1 is partly related to reduce lipid profile.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the influences of enteral nutrition (EN), parenteral nutrition (PN) and probiotics supplement on the intestinal microecology, and barrier function of the rats with abdominal infection.
METHODSTwenty-one Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with abdominal infection were randomly divided into three groups, and received PN (PN group, n=7), PN+ EN (PN+ EN group, n=7) or PN+ EN+ probiotics (probiotics group, n=7) respectively with isonitrogen and isocaloric nutrition. The rats were sacrificed after six days. The feces in cecum were cultured for anaerobic bacterial growth and DNA fingerprint spectrum was analyzed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA technique. The transmembrane binding protein (occludin) and IgA levels in colon and terminal ileum were detected by immunohistochemistry method. The bacterial translocation rate and endotoxin level were also measured.
RESULTSThe germ numbers of different species were both higher in PN+ EN and probiotic group than those in PN group. The bands of DNA fingerprint spectrum were significantly decreased in PN group, but the bands in both PN+ EN group and probiotic group were similar to that in the normal rats. The expression levels of occludin and IgA in the intestine and colorectum were higher in both PN+ EN group and probiotic group compared with those of PN group (P< 0.05, P< 0.01, respectively), the expression level of occludin was higher in probiotic group than that in PN+ EN group (P< 0.05). The overall bacterial translocation rates and endotoxin levels were significantly reduced in both probiotic and PN+ EN group (P< 0.05), but there was no difference between probiotic group and EN group.
CONCLUSIONEN combined with probiotics can increase occluding and IgA expressions, improve the intestinal microecology, maintain the gut barrier function, and decrease the incidence of gut bacterial translocation.
