A bacterium which can effectively degrade LAS (Linear Sodium Alkylbenzenesulfonate) was isolated from washing powder manufacturing effluent and was preliminarily identified as Corynebacterium jeikeium GZ6. The bacterium can degrade LAS up to till 700 mg/L, and the optimum pH, temperature and concentration of LAS are 7.0, 30℃ and 400 mg/L, respectively. The biodegradation rate can reach 98.7% after 24 hours'cultivation in the suitable conditions. Experiments also showed that some heavy metal ions such as Hg2+ , Co2+ , Cd2+ can differently inhibit the degradation of LAS.

OBJECTIVETo explore the correlation of the gene polymorphisms of Toll-like receptor 2 ( TLR2) and TLR4 with the susceptibility and recurrence of condyloma acuminatum (CA).
METHODSUsing Snapshot, we detected the gene polymorphisms of TLR2 597(T/C), 1350(T/C), 15607(A/G), and 2258(G/A) and TLR4 896(A/G) and 1196(C/T) in the peripheral blood of 140 CA patients and 105 HPV-negative controls. We made comparisons between the CA patients and controls as well as between the cases of recurrent CA and those of non-recurrence at 6 months after treatment.
RESULTSThere were 72, 48, and 20 cases of genotype TT, TC, and CC of TLR2 597 (T/C), respectively, in the CA patients, as compared with 71, 31, and 3 cases in the controls. The gene frequency of mutant C was 31. 43% in the patients, significantly higher than 17.62% in the controls (χ2 = 12.04, P < 0.01), and it was 38.68% in the recurrent cases, remarkably higher than 27.01% in the non-recurrent cases (χ2 = 4.16, P < 0.05). There were 74, 49, and 17 cases of genotype TT, TC, and CC of TLR2 1350( T/C), respectively, in the CA patients, as compared with 73, 29, and 3 cases in the controls. The gene frequency of mutant C was 29. 64% in the patients, significantly higher than 16. 67% in the controls (χ2 =11.05, P < 0.01), and it was 36.79% in the recurrent cases, markedly higher than 25. 29% in the non-recurrent cases (χ2 = 4.18, P < 0.05). There were 44, 66, and 30 cases of genotype AA, AG, and GG of TLR2 15607(A/G), respectively, in the CA patients, as compared with 26, 58, and 21 cases in the controls. There was no significant difference in the gene frequencies of mutant G between the two groups (χ2 = 0.33, P > 0.05). No mutant genes of TLR2 2508 (G/A) or TLR4 896(A/G) and 1196(C/ T) were detected in either the CA patients or the controls. Linkage disequilibrium analysis showed a tight linkage between TLR2 597 (T/C) and 1350(T/C) (D' = 1, r2 = 0.93).
CONCLUSIONTLR2 597(T/C) is tightly linked to 1350(T/C), which is correlated with both the susceptibility and the recurrence of condyloma acuminatum.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of combination of pulsed CO2 laser irradiation and diammine silver fluoride treatment on the ultrastructure of dentine.
METHODSEach extracted molars was made into four identical dentinal specimens, which were randomly divided into 4 groups according to the treatment methods: A, control group; B, pulsed CO2 laser irradiation; C, coated with 38%Ag(NH3)2F; and D, laser irradiation plus fluoride. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed.
RESULTSAs shown by SEM, group A showed clear dentinal tubuli, group B showed melted surface without dentinal tubule openings, group C showed thicker melted layer without dentinal tubule openings, and group D showed the thickest melted and recrystallized layer on dentine surface.
CONCLUSIONSBoth pulsed CO2 laser irradiation and 38%Ag(NH3)2F treatment can seal dentinal tubule. The combination of these two techniques can form a synergistic effect.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2004;24(6):534-537
OBJECTIVETo observe the changes of blood glucose, urinary protein and renal glomerular morphology in rats with diabetic nephropathy, and the effect of xiaoke granule (XKG) on them.
METHODSThe diabetic nephropathy model was established by 3/4 nephrectomy and once intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ). The experimental rats were divided into the model group, the XKG group, the positive control group and the sham operation group. Blood was taken from rat's caudal vein to test the fasting blood glucose (FBG) once every week after STZ injection and at the same time, urinary protein in 24 hrs (UP/24h) was investigated. All the rats were sacrificed 2, 6 weeks after STZ injection and morphological examination on their kidney was performed.
RESULTSSix weeks after STZ injection, glomerular sclerosis in various degrees was seen in the model group, but the pathological change was significantly milder in the treated groups. FBG in the model group was higher than that in the sham operation group at all time points respectively (P<0.05), while in the XKG group and the positive control group, the change was improved significantly. UP/24h in the model group was higher than that in the sham operation group at all time points respectively, and that in the XKG group at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after STZ injection was significantly lower than that in the model group. FBG and UP/24h showed a positive correlation.
CONCLUSIONA rat model of diabetic nephropathy was duplicated successfully. The elevated blood glucose level in diabetic nephropathy model could induce proteinuria. One of the routes of treatment of diabetic nephropathy by XKG is to reduce the blood glucose, eliminate the proteinuria, and thus to improve the pathological change in renal glomeruli.
