AIM: To explore the change of delayed rectifier potassium channel (K_V) activity in alveolar macrophages (AM) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) rats. METHODS: COPD model was established by exposure of the animals to cigarette smoke. With whole-cell voltage- or current-clamp techniques, K_V activity, membrane capacitance and resting membrane potential (Em) in AM from COPD model and control rats were compared. RESULTS: (1) Significant increases in total mononuclear cells and AM in bronchoal aveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were found in COPD group compared with in control group. (2) The AM K_V current altitude in COPD group [(520.5?38.7)pA, (+50) mV, n=30] was significantly lower than that in control group [(713.6?44.4)pA, (+50) mV, n=30, P0.05), but had more positive Em (P

Objective: To discuss the significance of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery in the treatment of local advanced esophageal cancer. Methods:A total of 272 cases of local advanced esophageal cancer were studied in retrospect. Out of the 272 cases, 112 were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery (CT-S), whereas the remaining 160 cases underwent surgical treatment (S) only. Complications and survival state after surgery were compared. Results: The rate of complications after surgery was as follows: CT-S: 34.8% (39/112); S: 29.4% (47/160), P=0.50. The five-year survival rate was 35.7% and 29.4%, respectively, P<0.05. The CT-S patients were divided into partial remission (PR) and stable disease (SD)/progressive disease (PD) groups according to the effect of the chemotherapy. The five-year survival rate was 38.5% and 30.1%, respectively, P<0.01. Conclusion: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is available for local advanced esophageal cancer. Postoperative complications are not increased by chemotherapy, and the survival rate for local advanced esophageal cancer is improved by neoadjuvant chemotherapy. PR has better prognosis compared with SD/PD.

Objective:To study the use of three-dimensional computer reconstruction in diagnosis and treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Methods:A retrospective analysis of clinical data was conducted on patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma admitted to the Department of General Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China from January 1, 2017 to July 31, 2019. The classification of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, vascular invasion and surgical resectability were determined by preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction. These data were then compared with the findings obtained during operations, by comparing with the three-dimensional reconstruction technology findings in classification of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, vascular invasion, and hilar extent of biliary and vasculature involvement. Results:Of 65 patients included in this study, there were 35 males and 30 females, with an age of (60.35±10.70) years. After operation, these 65 patients were classified into type I ( n=7), type II ( n=4), type III ( n=14), and type IV ( n=40) using the Bismuth classification. The accuracy rates of preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction for hilar cholangiocarcinoma classification, portal vein invasion, hepatic artery invasion, and diagnosis of hilar cholangiocarcinoma vasculature involvement were 90.7% (59/65), 90.7% (59/65), 86.1% (56/65) and 80.0% (52/65) respectively. Conclusions:The three-dimensional computer reconstruction technology could visually and accurately display the shape and spatial extent of hilar cholangiocarcinoma. It has an important clinical use in accurately diagnosing hilar cholangiocarcinoma preoperatively.
