Objective To study the relationship between the level of fluoride in urine and the prevalence of dental caries in children before and after the defluoridation, and to provide a basis for assessment of the effects of defluoridation projects and for control of dental caries. Methods Wamiao Village, in Jiangsu Province, a formerly severe endemic fluorosis area, was selected to carry out the study. All children aged 8-13 years old before the defuoridation were investigated from September to November in 2002, and children 8-10 years old who were born after the defluoridation were investigated from September to November in 2013.Urinary fluoride level of the children and the prevalence of dental caries were determined, and their relationships were analyzed. The urina sanguinis samples of children were collected in the morning, and the urine fluoride level was tested using the fluoride ion selective electrode.Dental caries diagnoses was referenced to Dental Caries. Results Totally children's urine samples were 236 and 68 respectively before and after defluoridation.Urinary fluoride level of the children was significantly decreased from (3.53 ± 1.81)mg/L (before defluoridation) to (1.39 ± 0.66)mg/L (after defluoridation, t =9.506, P < 0.01);the prevalence of dental caries was increased from 52.73% (29/55, before defluoridation) to 63.24% (43/68, after defluoridation), however, the difference was not significant (x2 =1.383, P > 0.05).The DMFT increased from 1.18 (before defluoridation) to 1.68 (after defluoridation), and the epidemic levels of dental caries were all at lower levels. The relationship between urine fluoride level and the prevalence of dental caries as well as the DMFT before defluoridation was a U-shape dose-response curve;which was gone after defluoridation. Conclusions The urinary fluoride level is significantly decreased after defluoridation for 10 years, the prevalence of dental caries is increased but not significantly. The results of this study indicate that the measure of fluoridation to prevent dental caries needs to be further validated.

International Eye Science 2009;9(5):820-823
AIM: To observe the neovascularization process with no intervention in rat allogenic penetrating keratoplasty. METHODS: Allogenic penetrating keratoplasties were successfully performed in 34 female SPF SD rats with no intervention after operations. Corneal neovascularization(CNV) process was noted on day 4, 7, 15 and 30 with operating microscope. The vascular area surface was calculated using the formula C/12×3.14×[r2-(r-I)2].RESULTS: CNV was noted in 29 out of 34 rats (85%). Firstly, the new vessels distributed around the cornea like a brush then gradually extended towards the center. The vessels were distorted and massive with branched tails, they continued growing to reticulated veins in peak time then gradually atrophied. The average neovascularization area (SE) on day 4, 7, 15 and 30 was 11.8±3.5mm2, 18.5±4.0mm2,14.4±4.3mm2 and 6.0±1.8mm2 respectively and 12.7±1.9mm2 in total. The average percentage that new vessels accounting the whole cornea area(SE) was 30.8%±8.7%, 65.3%±12.8%, 59.4%±14.5%,36.2%±10.9% and 48.7%±6.4% in total.CONCLUSION: In rat allogenic penetrating keratoplasties without intervention, CNV presented on day 4 and reached the maximum area on day 7. Then the vessels gradually atrophied, about 50% of the maximum area still remained on day 30.

AIM: To explore the feasibility of culturing human umbilical vein endothelial cells ( HUVEC ) on acellular corneal stroma and performing the posterior lamellar endothelial keratoplasty ( PLEK ) treating corneal endothelial decompensation.
METHODS: Thirty New-Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups randomly, 10 rabbits for experimental group, 10 for stroma group and 10 for control group. Corneal endothelial cells were removed to establish animal model of corneal endothelial failure. PLEK was performed on the rabbits of experimental group and stroma group, and nothing was transplantated onto the rabbits of control group with the deep layer excised only. Postoperative observation was taken for 3mo. The degree of corneal edema and central corneal thickness were recorded for statistical analysis.
RESULTS:Corneas in experimental group were relieved in edema obviously compared with that in stroma group and the control group, and showed increased transparency 7d after the operation. The average density of endothelial cells was 2 026. 4±129. 3cells/mm2 , and average central corneal thickness was 505. 2±25. 4μm in experimental group, while 1 535. 6±114. 5μm in stroma group and 1 493. 5±70. 2μm in control group 3mo after operation.
CONCLUSION:We achieved preliminary success in our study that culturing HUVEC on acellular corneal stroma and performing PLEK for corneal endothelial decompensation. HUVEC transplanted could survive in vivo, and have normal biological function of keeping cornea transparent. This study provides a new idea and a new way clinically for the treatment of corneal endothelial diseases.
