OBJECTIVETo develop a method for determining epichlorohydrin in the workplace air by gas chromatograph-electron capture detector (GC-ECD).
METHODSEpichlorohydrin in the workplace air was collected by activated charcoal tubes, desorbed using acetone, and analyzed by GC-ECD.
RESULTSA good linearity was obtained in the range of 1.0-50 µg/mL (r=0.999 7). The detection limit was 0.012 µg/ml, while the recovery rate was 88.1% and relative standard deviation ranged from 1.11% to 3.57%. The samples could be stored for seven days at room temperature.
CONCLUSIONThis method effectively eliminates the interferences of alkanes on determination of epichlorohydrin and improves the sensitivity by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude, which can solve the problem of detection limit above standard in GBZ/T 160.58-2004.

BACKGROUND:The use of cemented or uncemented hemiarthroplasty for unstable intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly remains controversial. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct a comparative study on the effectiveness and safety of these two methods.OBJECTIVE:To compare the clinical efficacy of cemented and uncemented hemiarthroplasty for unstable intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly.METHODS:Clinical data of 93 elderly patients with unstable intertrochanteric fractures in Department of Orthopedics,Shandong Energy Zaozhuang Mining Group General Hospital from May 2009 to May 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were divided into cemented (cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty for fractures,n=54) and uncemented (uncemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty for fractures,n=39) groups.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1) The amounts of postoperative drainage and blood transfusion in the cemented group were significantly less than those in the uncemented group (P < 0.05),but the operation time was significantly longer (P < 0.05).(2) There were no significant differences in the intraoperative blood loss, ambulation time, hospitalization time, postoperative complications, hip function, and mortality at 3 and 12 months postoperatively between two groups (P > 0.05).(3) Postoperative X-ray showed that all patients had good prosthesis position. There were 10 patients (3 cases in the cemented group,7 cases in the uncemented group) with postoperative prosthesis subsidence, but all of them were less than 3 mm.(4) None of patients had heterotopic ossification, osteolysis around the prosthesis and acetabular cartilage wear during follow-up.Additionally,25 patients (16 cases in the cement group,9 cases in the uncement group) died during follow-up,without prosthesis loosening, and the remaining 68 patients were followed up for 2-7 years,(4.5±2.3) years on average, and none needed revision because of prosthesis loosening.(5) These results indicate that for senile unstable intertrochanteric fractures, both cemented and uncemented hemiarthroplasty can achieve satisfactory curative effectiveness and exhibits good safety.Notably, the cemented prosthesis has advantages in reducing postoperative drainage volume and blood transfusion.

Objective To examine loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and microsatellite instability (MSI) of locus D8S532 on chromosome 8 and their influence on the expression of sFRP1 in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCCs), which may provide an experimental evidence for clarifying the mechanism of sFRP1 gene and tumor development. Methods DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and ordinary silver stain were used to study LOH and MSI of locus D8S532. Envision immunohistochemistry, Leica-Qwin computerized imaging system and Image-Pro PluS (IPP) version 4.5 professional imaging analysis software were used to assess the expression of sFRP1. Results The detection rates of LOH and MSI of locus D8S532 in the 36 specimens of HCC were 11.11% and 8.33% respectively. The down-regulation of sFRP1 was observed in 31 of 36 HCCs (86.11%) compared with non-carcinoma liver tissues, and the positive rate of sFRP1 protein of the HCCs was 52.78%( 19/36 ). The frequency of LOH was lower in the cases with positive expression of sFRP1 protein than those negative (0 vs 23.53%, P <0.05). Conclusion It was a common phenomenon that expression of sFRP1 protein is negative or low in Chinese with HCCs. The genetic instability of sFRP1 gene was one of causes, which lead to HCCs. LOH may play a major role in negative expression of sFRP1.

Objective: The effect of thymosin alpha 1 (Tα1) on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after radical hepatectomy was assessed. Methods: A total of 558 HCC patients treated by radical hepatectomy were retrospectively collected. Patients in the treatment group (n=146) received postoperative Tα1 therapy, whereas patients in the control group (n=412) did not. Propensity scale matching was conducted to improve the balance between the two groups. Changes in liver function, recurrence-free survival rates, and overall survival rates were compared between the two groups. Results: Postoperative liver function (i.e., TBIL, ALB, ALT, and PT) in the treatment group was significantly better than that in the control group (P<0.05). The one-, two-, and three-year recurrence-free survival rates and overall survival rates in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P=0.019 and P=0.011, respectively). Conclusion:Postoperative Tα1 therapy can improve postoperative liver function, thus significantly prolonging recurrence-free survival and overall survival.

BackgroundResearches found that the posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after lensextraction is associated with the elevation of the transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β).To seek the drug for inhibitingproliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) is crucial in the treatment and prevention of PCO.ObjectiveThisstudy was to investigate the preventing effects of decorin on the proliferation of LECs.MethodsRabbit LECs wascultured and passaged. The LECs in growth phase were incubated in 96 well plate at the density of 8×106/L.Decorinwith the concentrations 0.1,1.0,10.0 mg/L was added into the medium for 24,48 and 72 hours respectively.0.1%DMSO was used at the same way as positive control group, and the regular cultured cells worked as blank controlgroup. The inhibitory rates of different concentrations of decorin on the growth of LECs were detected by MTT at 24,48and 72 hours after addition of decorin. The percentage of LECs in different cell cycles in various groups was assayedusing flow cytometry.TGF-β level in medium suspension was detected using ELISA.The expression of TGF-β mRNA in LECs was checked by RT-PCR,and α-SMA expression in LECs was determined using immunochemistry. Results ELISA assay showed a statistical difference in the TGF-β levels of different groups (F=39.24,P=0.03 ).The TGF-β levels in 1.0,10.0 mg/L decorin groups were significantly decreased in comparison with blank control group (P<0.01) and 0.1 mg/L decorin group (P<0.05 ).The inhibitory rates of decorin in the concentrations of ≥ 1.0 mg/L on the growth of LECs were higher than the blank control group, and those in various concentrations of decorin groups were considerably lower in 24 hours compared with 48 and 72 hours ( P<0.05 ) and so was the 48 hours compared with 72 hours (P<0.05 ).The percentages of LECs in G0/G1 phase were ascent in 0.1,1.0 and 10.0 mg/L decorin groups in comparison with G2/M and S phase (P<0.05).Immunochemistry revealed the weak expression of α-SMA in various decorin groups in comparison with control group. Conclusions Decorin can effectively inhibit LECs growth and induce LECs apoptosis in concentration- and time-dependent manner. It is suggested that decorin can be used in the prevention and treatment of after cataract.
