usually in the 24th to 72nd h postburn. There was edema associated with mild necrosis of the duodenal mucosa immediately after burns.Severe necrosis occurred in the 2nd h postburn. The manifestations reached the peak in the 24th h and were alleviated in the 72nd h postburn. As a rule, the damages on the duodenal mucosa occurred early and persisted for a long period with high incidence and severe wounding conditions. The damages of gastroduodenal mucosa were more severe in the phosphorus burn group than in the napalm burn proup mainly because of the more intense heat stress after phosphorus burns and the tosicity of the element phosphorus and phosphorus free redicals.

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(03):-
Blood GSHpx activities of populations living in Keshan disease affected and non-affected areas were examined. The enzyme activities of people in affected areas were lower than that in non-affected areas. That of agricultural population is lower than that of workers and staff members living in same affected areas. The enzyme activities of patient suffering from Keshan disease were a little lower than that of other children. After oral administration of Na2SeO3 for one year, the enzyme activities of children in affected areas increased to the same level of that in non-affected areas. Significant correlation was found between selenium concentration of blood and hair and GSHpx activities.

Objective To demonstrate the value of eombined application of prenatal ultrasonography with fetal magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in the diagnosis of monochorionic muhifetal realformations. Methods Fourteen cases of muhifetal malformations, detected by prenatal ultrasonography, received MRI within 48 h afterwards. All diagnosis were confirmed after delivery or mid-term termination. All imaging results of the 14 cases were retrospectively reviewed. Results Among the 14 cases, there were 7 acardias,5 Conjoined twins and 2 demise of multifetuses.Comparing ultrasound with MRI,we found that:(1)In cases with acardia and demise of multifetusea, ultrasound could diagnose correctly and be an important tool for follow-up,while MRI could demonstrate organs and structures of the acardiac recipient more clearly and detect the secondary changes of brain in the donor and survived fetus.(2)In Conjoined twins, ultrasound was superior to MRI in demonstrating the structure and function of cardiovascular system : and equivalent to MRI in identifying stomach, kidney, bladder and limbs;but inferior to MRI in identifying esophagus, lung, liver and intestinal, especially in the brain. And MRI could demonstrate two fetuses and the relationship between them in COnjoined twins simultaneously. Conclusions Prenatal ultrasonography and MRI have their own advantages and disadvantages in diagnosing monochorionic multifetal malformations. But the combination of prenatal ultrasonography and fetal MRI may be more valuable.

The phenylacetone monooxygenase, isolated from Thermobifida fusca, mainly catalyzes Baeyer-Villiger oxidation reaction towards aromatic compounds. Met446 plays a vital role in catalytic promiscuity, based on the structure and function of phenylacetone monooxygenase. Mutation in Met446 locus can offer enzyme new catalytic feature to activate C-H bond, oxidizing indole to finally generate indigo and indirubin, but the yield was only 1.89 mg/L. In order to further improve the biosynthesis efficiency of the whole-cell catalyst, metabolic engineering was applied to change glucose metabolism pathway of Escherichia coli. Blocking glucose isomerase gene pgi led to pentose phosphate pathway instead of the glycolytic pathway to become the major metabolic pathways of glucose, which provided more cofactor NADPH needed in enzymatic oxidation of indole. Engineering the host E. coli led to synthesis of indigo and indirubin efficiency further increased to 25 mg/L. Combination of protein and metabolic engineering to design efficient whole-cell catalysts not only improves the synthesis of indigo and indirubin, but also provides a novel strategy for whole-cell catalyst development.

Objective To investigate changes in the number of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) from peripheral blood and pathological feature in the development of transplant arteriosclerosis in mouse abdominal aortic allografts, and discuss their correlations. Methods A segment of abdominal aorta was transplanted orthotopically from C57BL/6 to Balb/c mice. The grafts were harvested at 3rd day, 2nd week, 4th week and 6th week after the operation and studied by light and electronic microscopy. Regional changes in the lumen and intima were measured with computer imaging analysis system. EPC from peripheral blood were quantified by flow cytometry. Results Endothelium injury and inflammatory cells infiltration were seen in the aortic allografts at 3rd day after transplantation.Neointimal lesions and acute rejection were observed as early as 2nd week after surgery. The lumen of allografts was significantly narrowed due to neointima hyperplasia and had progressed at 4th and 6th week postoperatively. The number of circulation EPC was increased from 1 st day after operation and reached the peak at 3rd day. Thereafter the number of EPC was decreased rapidly and significantly less at 14th and 28th day postoperation than that pre-operation. Conclusion Abdominal aortic transplantation from C57BL/6 to Balb/c mice presents typical pathological feature of transplant arteriosclerosis. The number of EPC from peripheral blood is related to the process of injured endothelial repair and neointima formation of aortic grafts. EPC count may be considered a novel biological marker and therapeutic intervention for transplant arteriosclerosis.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2014;32(9):791-796
Background Most anti-inflammation eyedrops are limited in clinical application owing to multiple adverse effects.A novel peptide GC31 derived from human thrombomodulin has a natural anti-inflammatory activity.Compared with conventional anti-inflammatory eyedrops,GC31 possesses more advantages and potential clinical transforming value. However, relevant study is still lack. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of GC31 and the possible mechanisms. Methods Sixty SPF male Wistar rats aged 8-10 weeks were randomized into 6 groups using randomized number table.Non-specific keratitis models were established in 40 rats by intrastromal injection of 10 μl of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) dissolved in PBS.Different doses of GC31 (125 μg or 250 μg) or dexamethason soluble in PBS were sunconjunctically injected in the experimental eyes respectively in the low dose GC31 group, high dose of GC31 group and the dexamethason group, and 10 μl of PBS was used in the same way in the PBS control group. No drug was injected in the model group, and the normal rats were employed as the blank control group. The corneas were examined by slit lamp microscope and were scored based on the criteria of Anand 24 hours after injection. Then the corneas were collected for histopathological examination.Expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65 in the corneas was detected using immunochemistry.Expressions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) proteins were assayed using ELISA.Real-time PCR was used to detect the expressions of IL-6 mRNA and TNF-α mRNA.The use and care of the experimental animals followed Regulation for the Administration of Affair Concerning Experiment animals by State Science and Techonology Commission. Results A significant difference was seen in the ocular inflammatory scores among the six groups (F =301.238,P =0.000).The inflammatory scores were significantly lower in the high dose of GC31 group than those in the model group (1.85 ± 0.36 versus 2.90± 0.43) (t' =-5.144,P =0.000) ; and the scores in the dexamethason group was lower than those in the high dose of GC31 group(t' =-3.931,P=0.000).Infiltration of inflammatory cells in corneal tissue was milder in the high dose of GC31 and the dexamethason group compared with the model group. The positive response for NF-κB p65 was obviously weaker in the rat corneas in the low and high dose of GC31 groups and the dexamethason group in comparison with the model group. The contents of IL-6 and TNF-α proteins in the corneas were significantly reduced in the low and high dose of GC31 group and the dexamethason group compared with the model group (low dose group:t=-2.626,P=0.009;t'=-2.310,P=0.017.high dose group:t =-3.361,P=0.001 ;t'=-3.151,P=0.002),and the contents of IL-6 and TNF-α proteins in the dexamethason group were lower than those in the high dose of GC31 group (t=-3.361,P=0.001;t'=-3.360,P=0.000).In addition, the expression trend and compared results of IL-6 mRNA and TNF-α mRNA among the groups were similar to those of the IL-6 and TNF-α proteins (all at P<0.01).Conclusions GC31 suppresses LPS-induced corneal inflammation response by downregulating the expression of inflammatory eytokines. The effect is more dominant in the doses of 250 μg than that in the doses of 125 μg.
