OBJECTIVETo explore effective approaches of treating elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures.
METHODSFrom August 2008 to October 2012,175 elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures were treated with locking compression plate (LCP) through anterior tibial. There were 112 males and 63 females with an average of 71.3 (ranged 60 to 83) years old. Of them,89 cases were treated by anterior tibial tension reduced incision with LCP,including 62 males and 27 females with a mean age of (71.8 +/- 6.4) years old. Eighty-six patients were treated by distal tibial incision with LCP,including 58 males and 28 females with a mean age of (70.3 +/- 6.7) years old. Swelling time, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, healing time, complications and AOFAS scores were compared between two groups after operation.
RESULTSSwelling time in anterior tension reduced incision with LCP and distal tibial incision with LCP was (5.6 +/- 1.3) and (9.7 +/- 2.1) days, healing time was (4.2 +/- 1.4) and (5.4 +/- 1.9) months, and complications were found 3 in tension reduced incision and 10 in distak tibial incision respectively;and all data shown statistically significant differences between two groups (P < 0.05). At 12 months after operation,AOFAS score was 89.0 +/- 9.7, 87.9 +/- 9.4; and there was no statistically significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONTension reduced incision through anterior tibial combined with locking compression plate fixation in treating elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures can provide good clinical effects with quick fracture healing and low complications.

OBJECTIVETo identify the differentially expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) between esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESC) and adjacent non-tumorous tissue (NT).
METHODSThe expression levels of the miRNAs were detected in 3 fresh ESC and NT samples by hybridization with miRNAs microarray chip. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR was performed to confirm the results of the microarray analysis. The expressions of hsa-miR-126 and hsa-miR-518b in ESC were validated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR in another independent 15 matched samples.
RESULTSA total of 11 miRNAs exhibited differential expressions in ESC samples as compared to their expressions in the NT samples, including a 1 up-regulated miRNA and 10 down-regulated miRNAs. Compared with normal esophageal samples, the ESC tissues showed up-regulated hsa-miR-126 and down-regulated hsa-miR-518b expression.
CONCLUSIONhsa-miR-126 and hsa-miR-518b are differentially expressed in ESC, and they might play important roles in the carcinogenesis and progression of ESC.

Heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) from Escherichia coli is a bacterial protein toxin with an AB5 hexamer structure. LT is a powerful mucosal adjuvant when co-administered with soluble antigens. However, its use in mucosal immunity is inconvenient because of its low yield and depolymerization during long-term storage under normal condition. In this study, we report an efficient expression system and optimized purification and storage strategy of LT. A gene encoding LT was cloned into the vector pET11c and transformed in E. coli BL21(DE3). By growing this strain on modified M9-CAA medium, LT was expressed efficiently. About 46mg/L LT could be purified from the supernatant of bacteria lysate. Using D(+)-Immobilized galactose column, LT could be purified at a wide pH range with various elution buffers. The optimized elution buffers are TEAN (pH 7.3) containing 0.3mol/L galactose and carbonate buffer (pH 10.4) containing 0.3mol/L galactose. After dried by freeze and placed in 4 degrees C, LT dissolved in TEAN (pH 7.3) and carbonate buffer (pH 10.4) were assayed by HPLC. The results indicated that the integrity of AB5 hexamer was kept well. LT could undergo long-term storage under this condition. This was proved to be an optimized strategy of LT storage. The results of GM1 binding assay and toxicity assay showed that the purified recombinant LT has normal biological character.

Journal of Chinese Physician 2023;25(4):622-626
Parkinson′s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in middle-aged and elderly people. In addition to motor symptoms, PD also has many non motor symptoms, such as dysosmia, constipation, cognitive impairment, etc. Among them, dysosmia is a common non motor symptom of early Parkinson′s disease. Research has confirmed that olfactory dysfunction (OD) can appear before the typical clinical symptoms of PD, which is of great significance to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, at present, the pathogenesis of OD is still unclear, and the inspection methods have not been unified, and there is no complete cure. This article reviews the latest research progress of dysosmia in Parkinson′s disease.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of inversion-table in the treatment of lower pole renal stones.
METHODSFrom March 2006 to September 2008, 36 patients with lower pole renal calculi were treated by inversion-table, 13 cases with stone diameter from 4 mm to 20 mm received extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) combined with inversion-table treatment and other 23 cases with stone diameter from 2 mm to 4mm received inversion-table treatment alone.
RESULTSAll of 36 cases underwent inversion-table treatment successfully and no one had cardio-cerebral accident. After following up 3 months, the radiologically documented complete stone clearance rate at 3 months group was 83.3%.
CONCLUSIONInversion-table treatment is a safe and valuable adjunct in assisting passage of lower pole renal stone fragments after mini-invasive treatment of stone and can improve stone-free rate.

A portable ECG monitor is introduced in the paper, which has a temporary intravenous and transesophageal fixable rate pacing function. During the PSVT attack, the tachyarrythmia can be stopped by the transesophageal cardiac pacing while the ECG signals are monitored. The instrument has some advantages such as small size, low price and good practicality. It is worth while introducing and popularizing it to all hospitals.

National Journal of Andrology 2010;16(3):258-260
OBJECTIVEChronic prostatitis, especially type III A, is a common disease in adult males, for which there are quite a few therapeutic methods. This study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of enoxacin in the treatment of III A prostatitis.
METHODSWe selected 198 cases of III A prostatitis with complete treatment and follow-up data from the outpatients, all treated by enoxacin injection for 1 week, followed by oral medication of enoxacin for 2 weeks. Then we evaluated the therapeutic effect based on the NIH-CPSI scores and changes in the indexes of expressed prostatic secretions (EPS).
RESULTSThe rate of total effectiveness was 86.4%, cure 8.6% (17/198), remarkable effectiveness 58.1% (115/198), improvement 19.7% (39/198), and ineffectiveness 13.6% (27/198). Only 16 cases (8.1%) complained of transitory gastrointestinal tract discomfort and/or skin itching.
CONCLUSIONEnoxacin has desirable efficacy and few adverse effects on type III A prostatitis.
