It was widely believed that the interaction between rice and rice blast fungus can be interpreted by the gene-for-gene hypothesis. Two interaction models between rice blast fungus and anti-disease genes had been briefed. They were receptor-ligand model and guard model. The progress of research about molecular marker and position on avirulence genes of the pathogens of rice blast (Magnaporthe oryzae) was reviewed, and the methods to clone and the cloned avirulence genes of rice blast fungus were also summarized.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of blood activating wind dissipating acupuncture (BAWDA) on blood pressure (BP) of prehypertension (PHT) patients.
METHODSTotally 60 PHT patients were assigned to the control group and the acupuncture group according to random digit table, 30 in each group. All patients were intervened by life style. BAWDA was additionally performed in patients in the acupuncture group for 6 weeks (30 times). The improvement of BP after intervened by acupuncture was observed. BP success rates and the proportion of PHT progressing to hypertension (HT) were also observed after 6-week intervention of acupuncture and at 1-year follow-up.
RESULTSSystolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased after 6-week intervention in the acupuncture. The BP control rate was 56.7% (17/30 cases) in the acupuncture group vs.10.0% (3/30 cases) in the control group with statistical difference (chi2 = 14.70, P < 0.01). At 1-year follow-up BP success rate was 36.7% (11/30 cases) in the acupuncture group, remarkably higher than that of the control group [13.3%, (4/30 cases)] (chi2 = 4.36, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSBAWDA showed BP regulating roles in a gradually stable decreasing tendency. It also could elevate BP success rate of PHT, and reduce the risk of PHT progressing to HT.

OBJECTIVETo study the relationship of the incidence of bronchial dysplasia (bronchial anomalous origin and bronchial stenosis) with congenital heart disease.
METHODSA total of 185 children with congenital heart disease or bronchial dysplasia were enrolled. Bronchial dysplasia was identified by the 64-MSCT conventional scanning or thin slice scanning with three-dimensional reconstruction.
RESULTSForty-five children (25.3%) had coexisting bronchial dysplasia and congenital heart disease. The incidence rate of bronchial dysplasia in children with congenital heart disease associated with ventricular septal defect was higher than in those without ventricular septal defect (33.7% vs 15.0%; P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the incidence rate of bronchial dysplasia between the children with congenital heart disease who had a large vascular malformation and who did not.
CONCLUSIONSBronchial dysplasia often occurs in children with congenital heart disease. It is necessary to perform a tracheobronchial CT scanning with three-dimensional reconstruction to identify tracheobronchial dysplasia in children with congenital heart disease, especially associated with ventricular septal defect.

Chinese Medical Journal 2006;119(8):622-627
BACKGROUNDCongestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR), which may hasten CHF. Adaptive servoventilation (ASV) is a novel method of ventilatory support designed for removal of CSF in CHF patients. This study compares the efficacy of ASV in patients with CHF and CSR with the efficacy of oxygen therapy.
METHODSFourteen patients with CHF and CSR were recruited. During sleep, nasal oxygen therapy and ASV treatment were each performed for two weeks. Comparison before and after each treatment was made for the following items: a) parameters of sleep respiration, sleep structure and quality; b) left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) and 6-minute walk distance.
RESULTSCompared with the baseline levels of apnoea hypopnoea index of 34.5 +/- 6.1 before treatment, the apnoea hypopnoea index significantly decreased following oxygen therapy to 27.8 +/- 8.2, P < 0.05 and further reduced following ASV treatment to 6.5 +/- 0.8, P < 0.01. The minimal pulse oxygen saturation markedly increased following oxygen therapy from a baseline of (84.3 +/- 2.6)% to (88.6 +/- 3.7)%, P < 0.05 and further increased following ASV treatment (92.1 +/- 4.9)%, P < 0.01. Stages I + II sleep as percentage of total sleep time decreased from (81.9 +/- 7.1)% to (78.4 +/- 6.7)% following oxygen therapy and further to (72.4 +/- 5.0)% following ASV treatment. Stages III + IV sleep as percentage of total sleep time decreased from (8.4 +/- 5.5)% to (6.0 +/- 3.0)% following oxygen therapy and but increased to (11.9 +/- 5.4)% following ASV treatment. The arousal index of 30.4 +/- 8.1 before treatment significantly decreased following oxygen therapy to 25.6 +/- 5.7, P < 0.05 and further declined following ASV treatment to 18.2 +/- 6.1, P < 0.01. No significant difference was shown in above percentages between day 14 of oxygen therapy and before treatment (P > 0.05). LVEF was significantly higher on day 14 of ASV treatment (37.2 +/- 4.1)% than on day 14 of oxygen therapy (33.2 +/- 5.1)% and before treatment (30.2 +/- 4.6)% (all P < 0.05). Six-minute walk distance was the shortest before treatment (226 +/- 28) m, longer on day 14 of oxygen therapy (289 +/- 26) m, and the longest on day 14 of ASV treatment (341 +/- 27) m (all P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONASV treatment is of better efficacy and greater clinical significance in improvement of CHF by eliminating CSR than oxygen therapy.

Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery 2010;13(8):572-576
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the treatment strategy, prognosis and pattern of recurrence in patients with rectal cancer.
METHODSFrom May 1979 to November 2006, 314 patients with recurrence after rectal cancer resection were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: local recurrence (LR) and distant metastasis (DM). The clinicopathologic features, treatment strategies and prognosis were analyzed.
RESULTSOf the 314 patients with recurrence, 168 (53.5%) were LR with a mean recurrence-free interval (RFI) of (24.7+/-1.9) months and 146 (46.5%) were DM with a mean RFI of (22.7+/-1.9) months. Compared to the DM group, the patients in the LR group showed no significant difference in clinicopathological data except the time to recurrence (P<0.01), primary tumor location (P=0.043), and the postoperative use of chemoradiotherapy (P=0.007). Mean recurrence-specific survival(RSS) was (24.7+/-1.9) months for LR and the 3- and 5-year survival rates were 0.48 and 0.25. The 3- and 5-year survival rates in patients with DM were 0.33 and 0.16 with a mean RSS of (22.7+/-1.9) months. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). Cox regression analysis for RSS showed that the time to recurrence, TNM stage, and treatment strategy (including procedure and the use of postoperative chemoradiation) were independently prognosis factors for the patients with recurrence rectal cancer (all P<0.01). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences in RFI or RSS among different subgroups within either LR or DM groups.
CONCLUSIONSPatients of rectal cancer with LR have a better survival than those with DM. Moreover, radical resection can improve the prognosis of patients with recurrence of rectal cancer, especially for patients with early TNM stage of the primary tumor and later period of recurrence.

Objective To conduct a microbiological and parasitological investigation of experimental minipigs in Guangdong province. Methods Four major experimental minipig production units in Guangdong province were included in this investigation. Samples were taken from a total of 154 pigs of 4 brreds, i. e. , Bama minipigs, Juema minipigs, Tibet minipigs and Wuzhishan minipigs. Pig fur, scales, serum, rectal swabs and feces samples were collected for detection of 20 pathogens. The data were analyzed and compared among the production units and breeds. Results Mixed infections were detected in all the four institutions. The infection rates of 7 pathogens were rather high: Streptococcus suis type 2 (50. 7%), Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (40. 3%), Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (100%), Japanese encephalitis virus (41. 3%), porcine circovirus type 2 (74. 8%), porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (73. 8%),gastroenteritis virus (44. 7%). Porcine parvovirus (26. 0%), pseudorabies virus(15. 6%) and intestinal worms (3. 2%) were also detected in some animals. The immune qualified rates of classical swine fever virus (62. 8%) and foot-and-mouth disease virus (35. 8%) were rather low. The immune qualified rate of pseudorabies virus was as high as 98. 4%. Besides, Salmonella, Brucella, swine dysentery snake like spirochetes, dermatophytes, influenza virus. Toxoplasma gondii, ectoparasites, and coccidia were not detected. Conclusions The results of this investigation indicate that epidemiological quality control of pathogens in experimental minipigs and efforts to establish high grade minipig population in Guangdong province remain to be strengthened. Our study also provides a basis for revision of local and even national standards for experimental minipigs.

For determination the ionic mechanisms of the hypoxic acclimatization at the level of channels, male Spradue-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: control normoxic group and chronic intermittent hypoxic group [O2 concentration: (10 +/-0.5)%, hypoxia 8 h a day]. Using whole cell patch-clamp technique, voltage-gated potassium channel currents (IK(V)) were recorded in freshly isolated pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) of rat with acute isolated method. The effect of acute hypoxia on IK(V) of PASMCs from chronic intermittent hypoxia group was investigated to offer some basic data for clarifying the ionic mechanisms of the hypoxic acclimatization. The results showed: (1) In control normoxic group, after acute hypoxia free-Ca(2+) solution, the resting membrane potential (Em) of PASMCs was depolarized significantly from -47.2+/-2.6 mV to -26.7+/-1.2 mV, and the IK(V) of PASMCs was decreased significantly from 153.4+/-9.5 pA/pF to 70.1+/-0.6 pA/pF, the peak current percent inhibition was up to (57.6+/-3.3)% at +60 mV, and current-voltage relationship curve shifted to the right. (2) In chronic intermittent hypoxic group, the IK(V) of PASMCs was decreased significantly by exposure to intermittent hypoxia in a time-dependent manner, appeared to start on day 10 and continued to day 30 (the longest time tested) of hypoxia, and current-voltage relationship curve shifted to the right in a time-dependent manner. (3) Compared with the control normoxic group, the percent IK(V) inhibition by acute hypoxia was significantly attenuated in the chronic intermittent hypoxia group and this inhibition effect declined with time exposure to hypoxia. The results suggest that K(V) inhibition was significantly attenuated by chronic intermittent hypoxia, and this effect may be a critical mechanism of the body hypoxic acclimatization.

Objective To study the general mechanical behavior pattern of sensing angular velocity by 3 pairs of human semicircular canals. Methods Sinusoidal head rotation of a healthy subject was simulated by finite element method to analyze the dynamic responses in the above 3 pairs of canals in the left and right inner ear. Results Compared with the complicated node displacement distribution, the volumetric strain distribution of cupula was regular.Specifically, each pair of cupulae expanded or contracted within the same amplitude with the same response frequency to the angular velocity. The ratio of absolute volumetric strain among the horizontal semicircular canal cupula (HC cupula),the anterior semicircular canal cupula (AC cupula),and the posterior semicircular canal cupula (PC cupula),was approximately 1.00∶0.80 ∶ 1.72,which kept constant. In addition, the volumetric strain of HC cupula was in phase with that of AC cupula, but showing 14.4° out of phase with the angular velocity, and 180° out of phase with that of PC cupula. Conclusions The volumetric strain of cupula can preferably characterize the directional coding function of semicircular canal, and the amplitude, frequency and phase of the cupular volumetric strain can encode those of the stimulated angular velocity, respectively. These results will lay the foundation for establishing quantitative relationship of vestibulo-ocular reflex, and provide theoretical references for quantitative assessment for vestibular function by nystagmus examination.
