Journal of Environment and Health 2007;0(08):-
Objective To study the oxidative damage on testis of male rats induced by micro-nano-scale SiO2. Methods Male Wistar rats were exposed to nanometer SiO2(20-40 nm) and micro-meter SiO2(1-10 ?m)by intratracheal injection once two days. The rats were killed after 5 weeks of exposure. Some indicators related to the oxidative damage in the serum and the testis were determined. Results The activity of GSH-Px and SOD in the high dose groups decreased significantly and the MDA levels increased compared to the control group; The MDA levels of nano-silicon dioxide high dose group increased in the serum. Conclusion Nano-silicon dioxide may cause lipid peroxidation in the testis with a tendency of higher toxicity than that of micro-SiO2 at the same exposed level, the detail mechanism needs further discussion.
7.Statistical properties of nucleotide clusters in DNA sequences
Journal of Zhejiang University. Science. B 2005;6B(5):408-412
Using the complete genome of Plasmodiumfalciparum 3D7 which has 14 chromosomes as an example, we have examined the distribution functions for the amount of C or G and A or T consecutively and non-overlapping blocks of m bases in this system. The function P(S) about the number of the consecutive C-G or A-T content cluster conforms to the relation P(S)oce-as;values of the scaling exponent αCG are much larger than αAT; and αAT of 14 chromosomes are hardly changed, whereas αCG of 14chromosomes have a number of fluctuations. We found maximum value of A-T cluster size is much larger than C-G, which implies the existence of large A-T cluster. Our study of the width function ξ(m) of cluster C-G content showed that follows good power law ξ(m)ocm-γ. The average γ for 14 chromosomes is 0.931. These investigations provide some insight into the nucleotide clusters of DNA sequences, and help us understand other properties of DNA sequences.

Objective To detect the mutations in connexin genes in a family with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia(HED)complicated by pseudo-ainhum.Methods Peripheral blood samples were collected from a 20-year-old patient with HED complicated by pseudo-ainhum,and from his unaffected sister.Total DNA was extracted from these samples, and PCR was performed to amplify the partial coding region of GJB2,GJB5 and GJB6 genes.Subsequently.PCR products were bidirectionally sequenced in both subjects. Results No mutation was detected in GJB5 or GJB6 gene in either subjects. Two mutations (V27I and V37I)were detected in the GJB2 gene in the patient but not in his sister. Conclusion The mutation in the GJB6 gene may be absent in patients with HED;there might be other genes involved in the pathogenesis.
