OBJECTIVEThis study aims to construct a three-dimensional finite element model of a maxillary anterior teeth retraction force system in light wire technique and to investigate the difference of hydrostatic pressure and initial displacement of upper anterior teeth under different torque values of tip back bend.
METHODSA geometric three-dimensional model of the maxillary bone, including all the upper teeth, was achieved via CT scan. To construct the force model system, lingual brackets and wire were constructed by using the Solidworks. Brackets software, and wire were assembled to the teeth. ANASYS was used to calculate the hydrostatic pressure and the initial displacement of maxillary anterior teeth under different tip-back bend moments of 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 Nmm when the class II elastic force was 0.556 N.
RESULTSHydrostatic pressure was concentrated in the root apices and cervical margin of upper anterior teeth. Distal tipping and relative intrusive displacement were observed. The hydrostatic pressure and initial displacement of upper canine were greater than in the central and lateral incisors. This hydrostatic pressure and initial intrusive displacement increased with an increase in tip-back bend moment.
CONCLUSIONLingual retraction force system of maxillary anterior teeth in light wire technique can be applied safely and controllably. The type and quantity of teeth movement can be controlled by the alteration of tip-back bend moment.

Objective To study the correlation between isokinetic parameters and modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) in ankle spasticity as-sessment. Methods 18 stroke patients (spasticity group) and 16 healthy subjects (control group) in our hospitals from August 2014 to March 2015 were included. MAS was used to assess the ankle muscular tension. The ankle passive movement of both groups was measured with BIODEX isokinetic motor assessment system under 10 °/s, 60 °/s, 120 °/s, 180 °/s, 240 °/s. The peak torque (PT), peak torque/body weight (PT/BW), average torque (AT), and slopes of the linear regression curve of torque-velocity (SLOPE) were recorded. The correlation of the isokinetic paramenters and the MAS were tested with Spearman correlation analysis. Results The PT, PT/BW and AT were higher in the spasticity group than in the control group (P<0.05). And they increased as the angular velocity increased, and slowed after 120 °/s. The corre-lation coefficient of MAS and PT, PT/BW, AT, SLOPE were from 0.3043 to 0.7632 (P<0.01). Conclusion The isokinetic parameters were speed-dependent and closely related to MAS. 120 °/s was of the highest sensitivity, and the SLOPE under this anglular velocity was highly correlated with MAS.

In order to understand the alcohol's toxicity to the quantitative alternations of synapses in mouse visual cortex, the expression of synaptophysin after prenatal alcohol exposure was investigated. In present study, the experimental mice at P0, P7, P14 and P30 were grouped, as control, 2 g x kg(-1) alcohol treatment and 4 g x kg(-1) alcohol treatment. The pre-synaptic elements which were used to represent synapses were marked with synaptophysin (a synaptic vesicle associated protein) by immunocytochemistry technique. The synaptophysin positive boutons in layer VI of visual cortex were imaged under laser confocal microscope. With stereological methods, the number cal density of synapse in visual cortex was calculated in different groups at various ages. Moreover, Western blotting was carried out to detect the expression of synaptophysin in visual cortex. The results showed that prenatal alcohol exposure could cause synaptic loss with long-term effect and in a dose dependent manner. For instance, there were significant difference among the different treatment groups of P0, P14 and P30 as well (P < 0.05). Western blotting supported the results of immunofluorescent labeling. In conclusion, prenatal alcohol exposure can induce the synaptic loss dose dependently and with long-term effect. Our findings implicate that the synaptic loss with long-term effect in CNS probably contributes to the lifelong mental retardation and memorial lowliness associated with childhood FAS.

Objective To observe effect of environmental enrichment on the learning and memory ability and the expressions of hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1a) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in rats with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. Methods A total of 40 rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: bilateral vascular occlusion (2VO) of the common carotid arteries group (n=14, 2VO group), 2VO + enriched environment (EE) group (n=14, 2VO+EE group) and sham group (n=12, SHAM group).Morris water maze, novel object recognition test, real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR), immunohistochemistry methods and Western blotting were used to detect changes in learning and memory ability of rats and HIF-1α and VEGF expression levels in hippocampus. Results Morris water maze showed that the escape latency was longer in the 2VO group than in the SHAM group at 3, 4 and 5 day during the training (all P<0.05), while the 2VO+EE group spent significantly less time in finding the platform as compared with the 2VO group at 4 and 5 day (both P<0.05).The time for space exploration in target quadrant was less in 2VO group than in SHAM group (P<0.05), while it was longer in 2VO +EE group than in 2VO group (P<0.05).Novel object recognition test showed that the 2VO operation impaired the priority index (PI) of time spending at exploring the novel object (P<0.05), and environmental enrichment could improve the PI in 2VO group (P<0.05).The real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting showed that the HIF-1α mRNA expression was higher in 2VO group than in SHAM group (P<0.05).The VEGF mRNA and protein expressions were higher in 2VO+EE group than in 2VO group (both P<0.05).The expression of HIF-1α in hippocampal CA1 area was higher in 2VO group than in SHAM group (P<0.05).Conclusions Environmental enrichment can alleviate the damages of spatial and non-spatial learning and memory ability which are caused by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. And HIF-1α and its downstream gene VEGF may be involved in the restoration of cognitive function by enriched environment.
