1.A traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery.

Pseudoaneurysm arising from the superficial temporal artery (STA) is very rare and is most commonly caused by blunt trauma. Most pseudoaneurysms of the STA usually present as a painless pulsating mass, with concomitant symptoms according to location, and their size may rapidly increase. The treatment of choice is ligation and resection. We present a case of pseudoaneurysm arising from STA after a penetrating injury caused by broken glass. We describe the history, findings of physical examination, Doppler sonography, angiography, histopathology, and the outcome of treatment. We also include a brief review of this condition.

2.Foreign body embolus to ophthalmic artery following penetrating trauma of the neck.

Migration of metallic foreign body into the cerebral circulation is rarely seen. Most of the cases reported were due to gunshot wounds and shotgun wounds to the neck and face. When the foreign body is near the great vessel, it must be removed immediately or will cause complications. This study reported a case of delayed metallic foreign body embolus to the ophthalmic artery resulting from an injury to the right neck, which arose from the presence of metallic emboli to the cerebral circulation.

3.Analysis of 57 abdominal penetrating injury cases with exploratory laparotomy.

OBJECTIVE:
To explore the characteristics of abdominal penetrating injuries with exploratory laparotomy, as well as to summarize the key points of injury degree, and to supply reasonable reference for the practice and criterion modification in forensic clinical medicine identification. METHODS Fifty-seven cases which were all abdominal penetrating injuries with exploratory laparotomy from July 1990 to February 2011 were retrospectively analyzed including the instrument causing trauma, amount of the hemoperitoneum, the organs of the injury, conclusion of the forensic indentification, and so on.
RESULTS
There was some correlation between the organ injury patterns, volume of hemoperitoneum and identification conclusion for the abdominal penetrating injury cases with exploratory laparotomy. CONCLUSION The intra-abdominal injury has important effect for the injury degree of the abdominal penetrating injury cases with exploratory laparotomy and should be considered in the practice and criterion modification of these kinds of cases.

4.Effects of Adipose-derived Stromal Cells and of their Extract on Wound Healing in a Mouse Model.

In this study, the authors investigated the effects of adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) and of their extract on wound healing. After creating wound healing splint model on the backs of mice, ADSCs and their extract were applied. Wound healing rates were calculated at 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days after the wounding, and tissues were harvested at 7 and 14 days for histological analysis. Wound healing rates were significantly higher at 7, 10, and 14 days in the cell group than in the control, but in the cell extract group wound healing rates were significantly decreased (P<0.05). Histological scores and capillary densities in the cell group were significantly higher at 2 weeks (P<0.05). In the cell group, thick inflammatory cell infiltration and many capillaries were observed at 1 week, and thick epithelium and numerous large capillaries were observed at 2 weeks. The present study suggests that ADSCs accelerate wound healing as known, and the effects of ADSCs on wound healing may be due to replacing insufficient cells by differentiation of ADSCs in the wound and secreting growth factors by differentiated cells, and not due to the effect of factors within ADSCs.

Endomyocardial biopsy (EMBx) is a useful tool for diagnosing various cardiac pathologies. However, the routine use of EMBx has not gained widespread acceptance due to the possible complications related to the EMBx. Thus, not much information is available on the complications related to the EMBx. We prospectively evaluated 90 consecutive patients who underwent 2-D echocardiography guided transfemoral right ventricular EMBx at Kyungpook National University Hospital between March 2002 and November 2005 to determine the incidence, nature and subsequent management of complications related to EMBx. The clinical diagnoses before the EMBx were arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia in 54, dilated cardiomyopathy in 19, Brugada syndrome in 9, myocarditis in 6 and miscellaneous in 2 patients. The overall major complication rate was 5.6% and no procedure-related mortality occurred. Myocardial perforation (n=3), which was the most frequent complication, did not progress to cardiac tamponade requiring pericardiocentesis in any patient. Hemodynamically unstable ventricular tachycardia occurred in 1 patient. New and persistent right bundle branch block occurred in another. Our findings suggest that 2-D echocardiography guided transfemoral right ventricular EMBx is a relatively safe procedure.
