Pulmonary function test is one of the most important tools in the management of patients with respiratory tract diseases and allergic diseases. As with the difficulties in performing the test, it has been seldom used in pediatric field. But with the advent of simple, computerized tools, pediatric pulmonologist and allergist try to manage the patients using PFT. Still the normal predicted values are variable among the reports. So it is important to have normal predicted value in Korean children. From April to July 1992, pulmonary function test was performed in 965(male: 490, female: 475) primary school-aged children except <3 or >97 percentile of Korean-children Physical developemental standards with history of allergic diseases and respiratory tract diseases ay SungNam, KyongKiDo. We evaluated the predicted normal values of the FEV1.0, FVC and PEFR and logarithmic regression equation setting the predicted values by using the microspirometer of Micromedical Ltd. England that could that could be easily applied to children. 1) Predicted values of pulmonary function test items were generally higher in boys than those of girls. 2) Correlation coefficient to the parameters examined was the highest in height 0.78, then age 0.75, weight 0.70 and chest circumference 0.61.

Journal of the Korean Continence Society 2007;11(2):193-196
Midurethral slings are increasingly popular for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. They are relatively simple to implant and shorten operating time, hospital stay, and recovery time. Tension free vaginal tape (TVT) and Intravaginal slingplasty (IVS) mesh are both polypropylene mesh. TVT is a type I totally macroporous mesh which, because of pores larger than 75 microns, admits bacteria, macrophages, and fibroblasts into the pores. IVS is a type III mesh with microporous components which admits bacteria but not macrophages. So anterior IVS appear to be more at risk of infection or vaginal erosion than other monofilament mesh. We report our experience with a patient who underwent anterior IVS and developed erosion of the mesh through vagina, creating pelvic abscess.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal medullary transplants into the subarachnoid space have been demonstrated to reduce pain sensitivity. This analgesia most likely results from the release of neuroactive substances, particularly catecholamines and opioid peptides from the transplanted cells into spinal cord. METHODS: Isolated bovine chromaffin cells were encapsulated with alginate and poly-L-lysine prior to implantation into rat's subarachnoid space to protect them from host immune system. And then catecholamines from encapsulated chromaffin cells were measured quantitatively in vitro by High Performance Liquid Chromatograph. The animals were randomized into 2 groups, one of which received microencapsulated chromaffin cells and the other empty capsules. The effects of such implants were evaluated on the pain behavior resulting from a chronic constriction injury of the rat sciatic nerve for 30 days. RESULTS: Catecholamine concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was analyzed. Data (mean SD) are considered significant at P <0.05 (ANOVA for repeated measure and Dunnett's test). Continuous release of catecholamine and met-enkephalin with responsiveness to nicotine stimulation was measured from encapsulated cells in vitro. A significant reduction of allodynic response to acetone evaporation was observed in the animals implanted with cell loaded capsules compared to control animals with empty capsules. Catecholamine concentration in CSF was higher in the cell loaded capsule group. There were no complications related to implantation. CONCLUSION: We found that encapsulated chromaffin cells released continuously catehcolamines and opioids peptides in vitro and in the CSF. Those results may prove chromaffin cell's anagesic effect indirectly.

The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 2002;40(2):172-183
This study is going to compare the degree of color change which occurs in the following two cases of the factors which cause the color change of extra-staining,one is during glazing by the dental technician, the other is tooth brush abrasion which makes the biggest influence on color change. To compare the degree of color change before and after glazing,a sample was made with vintage incisal porcelain No.59 OPAL(Shofu Inc,Japan),after that it was painted with three colors of porcelain stainers, then the degree of color was measured with a spectrophometer(Model Chromaview 300,Spectoron Tech Co.Korea)after it had been treated with firing only and glazing after firing. 40,000-cycle and 80,000-cycle of tooth brush abrasion test were carried out in order to simulate the brushing effect of 4 years and 8 years by using the abrasion tester. The colors were mesured before the test, and after the 40,000-cycle and 80,000-cycle operations and the surfaces were examined by SEM. The results of this study were as follows ; 1.The color change before and after glazing was not great enough to have a clinical significance but the orange color was changed more significantly statistically than the blue and light brown(P<0.05). 2.In the case of the color change of stained porcelain by tooth brushing, carrying out staining and glazing with two-times firings resulted in statically less color change than one firing only(P<0.05). 3.In the case of the difference in the stainer's color, the orange color which has higher chroma was statically more sensitive than the blue color(P<0.05). 4.In the case of the color change after the 80,000-cycle abrasion, all showed color change when there was one firing and the orange stainer showed some color change with clinical significance when firings were done two times.

Korean Journal of Urology 2009;50(12):1213-1218
PURPOSE: We evaluated the effect of tamsulosin and hydrochlorothiazide (Dichlozid) on the expulsion of ureteral stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 132 patients with a single ureteral calculi less than 10 mm in diameter were enrolled and divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n=40) received tamsulosin (0.2 mg/day), group 2 (n=35) received Dichlozid (25 mg/day) and tamsulosin (0.2 mg/day), and group 3 (n=57) was the control. Proximal and distal ureteral stones were evaluated separately. Efficacy was evaluated in terms of the rate and duration of expulsion according to stone size (<5 mm, > or =5 mm) for a maximum period of 4 weeks. RESULTS: The mean stone diameters were 4.9+/-1.7 mm (group 1), 4.8+/-1.6 mm (group 2), and 5.3+/-1.8 mm (group 3). The overall expulsion rates were 70%, 74.3%, and 52.6%, respectively, and showed statistical significance. The mean durations of expulsion were 14.7+/-1.6, 12.8+/-1.5, and 18.0+/-2.0 days, respectively, and group 2 showed a significant decrease in the duration. There were no significant differences in the expulsion rate of proximal and distal ureteral stones in any group. Distal ureteral stones in groups 1 and 2 showed a significant reduction in the mean expulsion time (<5 mm: 13.6+/-0.5, 11.8+/-0.7, and 16.7+/-0.8 days in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively; > or =5 mm: 15.0+/-1.4, 13.0+/-0.6, and 17.8+/-0.4 days in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively). The mean expulsion time for smaller proximal stones (<5 mm) in groups 1 and 2 was reduced significantly (17+/-0.6, 15.2+/-0.8, and 19.3+/-0.6 days in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Medical therapy with tamsulosin is time-saving and effective for treating ureteral calculi. In addition, adjunctive treatment with Dichlozid may reduce the duration of expulsion.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2012;42(3):377-384
PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate factors affecting preparation stage to quit smoking in men. METHODS: Based on data from the Community Health Survey conducted in Chungbuk Province in 2008, we estimated rates and odds ratio (OR) of smoking cessation intention for 2,639 men who were current smokers. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors affecting preparation stage to quit smoking. RESULTS: Among current male smokers, the rate of smoking cessation intention was 17.1%. The OR of factors affecting smoking cessation was as follows: Compared to men with middle school education, the OR for rate of smoking cessation intention in men with high school education was 1.47 (p=.018), and for college or higher, 1.55 (p=.017). Compared to being single, the OR for cohabitation after marriage was 1.61 (p=.011) and living alone after marriage, 2.23 (p=.005). The OR for attempt to quit smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke and participation in smoking education were 6.80 (p<.001), 1.32 (p=.020) and 1.69 (p=.005), respectively. CONCLUSION: Results of this study show that it is necessary to decrease exposure to secondhand smoke and to increase participation in smoking cessation education targeting current smokers to move them from precontemplation or contemplation stage to preparation stage.

Anesthesia and Pain Medicine 2011;6(1):32-36
BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective for major psychosis and affective disorder. The ideal anesthetics for ECT provide rapid induction and recovery, and they attenuate the adverse effects of ECT. We compared the effects of etomidate, propofol and thiopental sodium during ECT. METHODS: Nine patients were enrolled in this double blinded cross over design study. The ECT was done 3 times per week for two weeks. We monitored the patients with electrocardiography, pulse oximetry, the bispectral index score and the blood pressure. We recorded the data at the time of arrival to the therapy room, just before ECT and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10 minutes after ECT. Hypnosis was induced with 3 mg/kg of thiopental sodium (group T), 1.5 mg/kg of propofol (group P) or 0.15 mg/kg of etomidate (group E). The ECT was done after administering 1 mg/kg of succinylcholine. The duration of seizure were measured after ECT. RESULTS: There were significantly different durations of motor seizure among the three groups. The duration of EEG seizure in group E was longer than that of group P and group T. The blood pressure and the heart rate of group P were significantly lower than that of the other groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to thiopental sodium and etomidate, propofol was not associated with clinically significant changes in the duration of seizure and hemodynamic stability. It has a good hypnotic effect and it did not affect the therapeutic efficacy of ECT. Etomidate is effective for patients for achieving a short duration of seizure after ECT is applied.

Korean Journal of Urology 2008;49(1):95-97
Testicular granulosa cell tumor(GCT) is a rare neoplasm. We report here on an incidentally discovered testicular granulosa cell tumor in a 36-year-old man. The serum tumor markers were within the normal limits. The ultrasonographic findings revealed a mass with a heterogenous hypoechoic echotexture, including multiple variable sized cystic components. The histology on the orchiectomy specimen demonstrated a gonadal stromal tumor with granulosa cell features. Testicular granulosa cell tumor of the adult type is a very rare tumor, and there have been several isolated case reports and small serial studies described in the literature.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 2010;58(3):296-298
Various complications of central venous catheterization have been reported, some of which are well-known, while others are described as a sporadic events. We experienced a case of left subclavian venous catheterization complicated by extravascular knotting, kinking, and entrapment of the guidewire and the guidewire was removed surgically. Although minimal resistance was encountered during guidewire insertion, the guidewire was advanced approximately 30 cm. Physicians should be aware of these rare potential complications when a guidewire is advanced if any resistance is encountered.
