1.Flow Cytometric DNA Content Analysis in uterine Cervical Cancer.
Korean Journal of Gynecologic Oncology and Colposcopy 1994;5(3):49-53
The DNA ploidy using fresh tissues from 304 cervial cancer were analyzed by flow cytometry in order to evaluate the correlation between DNA ploidy patterns and prognostic factors of uterine cervical cancer. There were l67 diploid cases(55%) and 137 aneuploid(45%). No significant correlation was noted in stage, age and lymph node metastases between diploid and aneuploid tumor. But S-phase fraction and DNA index were higher slightly in cases of lymph node metastases cornpaired to non-metastases. This results suggest that the DNA ploidy cannot be used as an independent prognostic fac- tor, but further evaluation will be needed in order to conclude definite relationship between prognoseic factor and S-phase fraction or DNA index.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1994;28(1):86-89
Hamartoma of the breast is relatively rare benign tumor, which is a well-circumscribed mass mainly composed of fibrous stroma, a(tipose tissue, ducts and acini. Muscular hamartoma of the breast is mainly composed of smooth muscle, and is extremely rare because proper smooth muscle is normaly absent in the breast except in the nipple. We describe a rare case of muscular hamartoma of the breast in a 38-year-old woman. This tumor was located in the upper outer quadrant and a 3 x 2.5 x 2 cm sized, well-demarcated but not encapsulated mass, The mass consisted mainly of irregularly arranged smooth muscle bundles in the fibrous stroma with lobular units and admixed fat cells. The origin of smooth muscle in hamartoma is not well known.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(5):319-325
No effective therapy has yet developed for liver fibrosis/cirrhosis by directly inhibiting the accumulation of extracellular matrix. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of tetrandrine in rat model of liver fibrosis induced by carborn tetrachloride (CCl4) administration intraorally. Tetrandrine, a calcium channel blocker, is anti-inflammatory constituent of the families Menispermaceae and Ranunculaceae, which have been used as folk remedies in China. Repeated administration of CCl4 for 14 weeks to rats induced liver fibrosis with steatosis. Rats were killed after 4, 8 or 14 weeks of treatment with CCl4, CCl4 tetrandrine (30 mg/kg) or CCl4 tetrandrine (50 mg/kg). The histopathological findings of liver were observed semi-quantitatively by light microscopy and volume percentage of the collagen deposition was determined by image analyzer. Tetrandrine inhibited collagen deposition induced by CCl4 administration, as shown by less severe steatosis and fibrosis and significantly decreased volume percentage of collagen fibers in CCl4 tetrandrine treated animals compared with CCl4 only group. Thus, the administration of tetrandrine holds great promise for treating subjects with liver fibrosis/cirrhosis as a result of chronic hepatic injury.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1977;12(3):571-574
Mesenchymal Chondrcsarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originally described by Lichtenstein and Bernstein in 1959. Since the original description, several other reports of this tumor have been published, bringing the total numbers of cases in the literature to about Sixty-five. We report a case of Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma in an 11-year-old boy who complained of a palpable mass in the region of the left iliac crest.

Journal of Laboratory Medicine and Quality Assurance 2018;40(2):92-100
BACKGROUND: Quality control is important for accurate diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and proficiency testing with external quality controls is an important part of quality control. This study intended to develop and supply customized external quality controls for HIV antigen/antibody testing fitted with currently used reagents for standardization of HIV infection diagnosis and evaluation of HIV testing competency of laboratories in Korea. METHODS: Serological tests and inactivation were performed on the obtained HIV antibody positive plasma. To manufacture quality controls having the required antibody titers, dilution ratio was searched using VIDAS (bioMérieux, France), Architect (Abbott Laboratories, USA), and Cobas 8000 (Roche Diagnostics, Germany) analyzers. Diluted source plasma was divided into aliquots after filtering. Homogeneity and stability of the produced external quality controls were evaluated. RESULTS: The collected HIV antibody positive plasma was confirmed by Western blot. Dilution ratios for source plasma were produced for each analyzer showing signal-to-cut-off 2–3, 5–7, and 15–16 reactivity. Diluted plasma was made to 1 mL aliquots and total set of 1,500 external quality controls for HIV antigen/antibody were manufactured. Produced controls satisfied the required criteria of homogeneity and showed less than 10% coefficient of variation for stability except negative controls. CONCLUSIONS: Customized external quality controls were developed and qualified for HIV testing reagents used in Korea. Continuous external quality control assessment for HIV tests with controls would be required.

This case report describes a patient with semipedunclated granuylar cell tumor(granular cell myoblastoma) of the proximal ascending colon removed by endoscopic polypectomy. A 39-year old femalie was visited to our hospital for intermittent abdominal pain and loose stool. Colonoscopic examination showed a semipedunclated lesion covered with yellowish white smooth mucosa in the proximal ascending colon. The tumor was removed by endoscopic polypectomy. The collected specimen was 0.9x0.8 cm in size. The cut surface of the specimen showed a white round firm tumor covered with mormal epithelium of the colon. Using immunohistochemical study, the tumor cells were to be positively stained by S-100 protein and negatively stained by desmin, which supports the concept of the Schwann cell origin of granular cell tumor. In Korea, 2 cases of granular cell tumor of the colon and rectum, which were treated by surgical removal, have been reported. This case in the first endoscopic polypectomy of granular cell tumor of the colon and retum in Korea. The endoscopic polypectomy is thought to be useful for the therapy of small pedunclated or semipedunclated granular cell tumor, intracolonic type.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 1991;20(10-11):854-859
We present a series of 10 Patients(Seven men and three women with an average age of 53 years) who underwent decompressive craniectomy for treatment to massive brain swelling following acute cerebral infarction. Clinical signs of cerebral herniation(anisocoria or fixed and dilated pupil, and/or hemiplegia with decerebrate righidity) were present in all patients. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed the mass effect by cerebral edema through midline shift. All patients were treated with an extensive craniectomy and duroplasty. Among them, one recovered without neurological deficit, three were moderately disabled but functionally dependent, three remained in a persistent vegetative state and three died within 9 days after surgery(good recovery=1, moderate disability=3, persistent vegetative state=3, death=3). The results suggest that decompressive craniectomy can be an useful lifesaving procedure for massive cerebral edema following widespread hemispheric infarction.
