Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1970;11(1):17-20
The authors analysed statistically 186 cases of the glaucoma patients among 20,785 out-patients who visited to our eye clinic from Jan. 1957 to Dec. 1969. The incidence of the glaucoma was 0.895% which was remarkably lower than the other reports. The following results were obtained. 1) Among the 186 cases, there were 85 male and 101 female patients. 2) There was no significant difference in left and right eye. 3) 51-60 year age group was prevalent (49 cases). 4) The age group over 40 occupied 61.3%. 5) The open angle glaucoma was the highest incidence.

The Palmaris longus tendon is important not because of its function but because of its usefulness as a donor tendon. Variations in the palmaris longus muscle ar elfrequent and the most common variation of the muscle is its absence. The incidence of absence of this muscle varies in different racial groups. Reinmann and his coworkers found the palmaris longus muscle absent in 12.9% of in their 1,600 limbs surgery. We have experiened 307 cases of palmaris longus graft surgery and found that there were 4 cases of absence of the palmaris longus tendon. We examined 2,000 limbs of Korean to see the presence of the palmaris longus muscle. Among 1,000 persons, the muscle was absent bilaterally in 11 persons(1.1%). It was absent unilaterally in 32 persons(3.2%). The probability that the muscle is absent in any single limb is 2.7%. There was no significant differences in the incidence of absence by sex or right and left side.

Diabetes mellitus, obstructive uropathy and urinary infection were considered to be most important in the etiology of renal papillary necrosis in the past literature. However, since 1953, Spuhler and Zollinger reported an association between phenacetin abuse and renal papillary necrosis, the most frequent cause of renal papillary necrosis has been diabetes mellitus, while analgesic abuse (contained phenacetin) has been the second most common factor in recent reports. In the more recent literature, most of the patient have had neither obstructive uropathy nor urinary infection, and it is quite possible that there two condition are of no direct etiological significance. But in this case, we can not suggest definite etiological factor except urinary infection clinically. Only one case is reported showing clinical manifestations laboratory findings, pyelographic findings and pathological changes compare with previous papers.

Annals of Dermatology 2002;14(3):164-167
Buschke-Lowenstein tumor is a rare disease in the category of designated as verrucous carcinoma characterized by its invasive downward penetration of underlying tissues in the perineum and perianal regions. Viruses, unclean sanitation and cytotoxic immune reaction have been proposed as the etiology of the tumor. However, among all the causes, recent studies have emphasized on the associaton of the tumor and human papilloma virus (HPV). Expecially, HPV also has been discovered in several cutaneous and anogenital lesions of solid organ transplant recipients. We herein report a case of Buschke-Lowenstein tumor in a renal transplant recipient with HPV 6 and 16 coinfection proved by HPV genotyping of DNA extracted from the biopsy specimen of the tumor.

Annals of Dermatology 2002;14(2):63-70
BACKGROUNDS: An inhibitory effect of magnesium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate (VC-PMG, a stable derivative of ascorbic acid) on melanogenesis has been described. Furthermore, glabridin in licorice is known to have inhibitory effects on melanogenesis and widely used for raw materials for depigmenting agents. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study are to provide objective data by measuring the visual clinical effects of VC-PMG with the colorimeter and to promote the development of de-pigmenting agents. METHODS: 20 volunteers joined the study. With an artificial UVB irradiation, eight tanned areas were made on the inner side of the forearm. During two months, each tanned area was treated with five whitening cosmetics with 3% VC-PMG and increasing concentration of licorice from 0% to 3%. Darkness degree of each area was measured weekly by the colorimeter and the visual assessment. RESULTS: For all cosmetics, whitening effect was measured by colorimeter and visual as-sessment. The cosmetic containing VC-PMG 3% and licorice 1% had more whitening effect than any other cosmetics of different concentrations. Moreover, VC-PMG 3% alone also had whitening effect in some volunteers. CONCLUSION: VC-PMG was clinically found to have whitening effect.
