3.A Case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome.

A case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome was presented with some clinical observation. Special feature was the presence of cyst-like elevated portions at the peripheral iris, in addition to secondary glaucoma, alopecia, poliosis and vitiligo. Of the iris, the surface of elevated portion was thin and depigmented. A light red fundus reflex was observed through the surface of iris cyst as in case of the albino and neovascularization was seen in the peripheral iris. Neither hyperglycemia in blood nor pleocytosis of spinal fluid was found in laboratory examination. In neurological examination including hearing disturbance, none of abnormality was found.

A case of Coats' disease, apparently as the first report in Korea, is presented. The patient was 17 years old Korean female and hospitalized Woo-Suk University hospital on May 23, 1969. Although cyclodialysis had been performed to the patient her intraocular pressure remained as the same as before the treatment, and thus enucleation Was done finally.

A case of Crouzon's disease, in spite of the relatively small number of cases reported until recently. The patient was 3years old male and hospitalized Woo-Sok University hospital 5 May, 1970. the appearance of the patient was striking type of facial deformity. There is a marked frontal boss forming a prominent bregmatic tumour, hooked nose, a small receding maxilla and a pronounced prognathism in wthich the teeth of the lower jaw protrude several centimetres beyond those of the upper. Proptosis and subnormal mentality was present, Cerebral decompression had been performed to the patient for his exophthalmos, it was aggreviated after the operation and thus enucleation was done finally.

8.Mini-plate removal in maxillofacial trauma patients during a five-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of indications for the removal of mini-plates over a five-year period in maxillofacial trauma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 530 patients who underwent treatment with mini-plate fixation after maxillofacial trauma were reviewed for a five-year period (May 2007 to May 2012). Patients were evaluated concerning the number of mini-plates removed, age and gender distributions, time between insertion and removal, indication for removal, and site of removal. RESULTS: The plates of 120 patients were removed (26 females and 94 males). The removal rate was 22.6%. The most frequent indication for removal was patient demand (81.7%), followed by tooth extraction (7.5%), and pain (3.3%). The most frequent removal site was the mandible (95.0%). CONCLUSION: The number of mini-plates removed was small, and the most common indication for removal was patient demand. There is no evidence to support a recommendation for the routine removal of titanium mini-plates.

9.Pathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological findings in dogs infected with Brucella canis

This study describes pathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological findings in adult dogs and fetuses naturally infected with Brucella (B) canis. A total of 42 dogs including 40 dogs and 2 aborted fetuses were examined. The most common gross lesions in infected dogs were swelling of lymph nodes and spleen. The testes showed marked swelling with multifocal to diffuse reddish discoloration. The most significant histopathological lesions were observed in the placenta. Placental trophoblasts were markedly hypertrophied due to the accumulation of intra-cellular gram-negative bacteria. Lymphocytic inflammation of varying severity was observed in the reproductive organs such as male testis, epididymis, and prostate gland and female uterus. Strong immunolabelling was observed in the cytoplasm of most trophoblasts in the placental tissues using immunohistochemistry. However, immunohistochemical staining did not demonstrate any organisms in other organs of dogs and fetuses. B. canis isolates were most frequently obtained from the whole blood (82.5%) and superficial inguinal lymph node (77.5%) in both sexes. In addition, the isolation rate was higher in male genital organs than in those of females. Hence, management of male dogs is most important because infected dogs can play a role as carriers.
10.External cross-validation of bioelectrical impedance analysis for the assessment of body composition in Korean adults.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) models must be validated against a reference method in a representative population sample before they can be accepted as accurate and applicable. The purpose of this study was to compare the eight-electrode BIA method with DEXA as a reference method in the assessment of body composition in Korean adults and to investigate the predictive accuracy and applicability of the eight-electrode BIA model. A total of 174 apparently healthy adults participated. The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. FM, %fat, and FFM were estimated by an eight-electrode BIA model and were measured by DEXA. Correlations between BIA_%fat and DEXA_%fat were 0.956 for men and 0.960 for women with a total error of 2.1%fat in men and 2.3%fat in women. The mean difference between BIA_%fat and DEXA_%fat was small but significant (P < 0.05), which resulted in an overestimation of 1.2 +/- 2.2%fat (95% CI: -3.2-6.2%fat) in men and an underestimation of -2.0 +/- 2.4%fat (95% CI: -2.3-7.1%fat) in women. In the Bland-Altman analysis, the %fat of 86.3% of men was accurately estimated and the %fat of 66.0% of women was accurately estimated to within 3.5%fat. The BIA had good agreement for prediction of %fat in Korean adults. However, the eight-electrode BIA had small, but systemic, errors of %fat in the predictive accuracy for individual estimation. The total errors led to an overestimation of %fat in lean men and an underestimation of %fat in obese women.
