1.Normal Sizes and Weights of Internal Organs of the Korean Young Male Adults.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1986;20(1):71-76
In autopsy, the evaluation of the size and weight of th internal organs is very important for the understanding of the pathologic conditions. The normal data of the internal organs must have regard to size, weight, sex, age and body weight. There are many reports on the normal value of human organs in Japan and other Western countries. But there are some variations in normal value according to race, geographics and living standard. In Korea, Lee & Roh had reported on weights of various organs of Korean and their proportional weights to body weights in 1957, based upon autopsy records from 1929 to 1941. But, there has been many improvement in socioeconomic status during past half-century in this country. And the Korean body conditions have much improved. Upon the base of above consideration, normal data fit for present Korean is mandatory. We have analysed records of 45 cases of Korean young adults's autopsy cases which were performed from Jan. 1984 to Dec. 1985, and obtained following data. The results obtained are as follows: Heart : left ventricle thickness; 1.76+/-0.3 cm right ventricle thickness; 0.5+/-0.1 cm Aorta circumference; 6.1+/-0.5 cm Pulmonary a. circumference; 7.0+/-0.7 cm Weight : 338+/-54 gm Lung : size: left; length 23.3+/-2.78 cm, width 12.3+/-2.28 cm, thickness 6.4+/-1.55 cm right; length 24.1+/-2.65 cm, width 14.7+/-2.95 cm, thickness 6.6+/-1.31 cm Weight : left; 541+/-117 gm, right; 634+/-118 gm Liver : size: greatest transverse measurement; 28.5+/-2.7 cm vertical measurement; 16.6+/-1.74 cm great anterior-posterior diameter; 8.8+/-1.51 cm weight: 1,559+/-267 gm Spleen : length: 12.7+/-2.1 cm, breadth: 8.4+/-1.5 cm, thickness: 3.4+/-1.1 cm, weight: 155+/- 69.3 gm Pancreas : length; 16.7+/-2.8 cm, weight: 111+/-34.5 gm Kidney : size: left; length; 11.2+/-0.7 cm, width; 5.9+/-0.7 cm, thickness; 3.8+/-0.8 cm, thickness; 3.6+/-0.7 cm weight: left; 150+/-25 gm, right; 138+/-29 gm Brain : weight: 1,498+/-132 gm

Authors experienced a 59-year-old male patient with the lymphoma of the small iritestine which involved the adjoining mesenteric lymph nodes, the parietaI pleura, and the skin. The skin lesions, simulating necrotizing angiitis, were deep purple colored, asymptomatic, tense, hemorrhagic bullae with soft consistency on the both thighs and left infraorbital area. He had extranodal type, and diffuse, poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma by the Rappaport classification, and stage IV by the Ann Arbor staging classification. After about 50 days of clinical manifestations, he was died mainly due to massive intestinal bleeding.

5.Inhibitory Effect of Tetrandrine on Extracellular Matrix Deposition in Rat Hepatic Fibrosis.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(5):319-325
No effective therapy has yet developed for liver fibrosis/cirrhosis by directly inhibiting the accumulation of extracellular matrix. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of tetrandrine in rat model of liver fibrosis induced by carborn tetrachloride (CCl4) administration intraorally. Tetrandrine, a calcium channel blocker, is anti-inflammatory constituent of the families Menispermaceae and Ranunculaceae, which have been used as folk remedies in China. Repeated administration of CCl4 for 14 weeks to rats induced liver fibrosis with steatosis. Rats were killed after 4, 8 or 14 weeks of treatment with CCl4, CCl4 tetrandrine (30 mg/kg) or CCl4 tetrandrine (50 mg/kg). The histopathological findings of liver were observed semi-quantitatively by light microscopy and volume percentage of the collagen deposition was determined by image analyzer. Tetrandrine inhibited collagen deposition induced by CCl4 administration, as shown by less severe steatosis and fibrosis and significantly decreased volume percentage of collagen fibers in CCl4 tetrandrine treated animals compared with CCl4 only group. Thus, the administration of tetrandrine holds great promise for treating subjects with liver fibrosis/cirrhosis as a result of chronic hepatic injury.

Ectopic pregnancy refers to gestation in which the fertilized ovum implants on any other tissure than tbe mucus membrane lining the uterine cavity. Cornual (intertitial) pegnancy is a relatively uncommon but potentially catastrophic form of ectopic pregnancy, defined as implantation in the intramural portion of a fallopian tube. A hydatidiform mole usually occupies the uterine cavity but it's occurrence in the uterine tube is extremely rare. Only a few cases of primary hydatidifm mole of the tube have been reported. We experienced a case of ectopic hydatidiform mole in the uterine cornua and so present it with brief review of literatures.

Annals of Dermatology 2004;16(1):19-22
Nodular cystic fat necrosis, first described by Przyjemski and Schuster, is a peculiar form of encapsulated necrosis of subcutaneous fat characterized by totally or near-totally encapsulated necrosis of fatty tissue in which clusters of nonviable adipocytes are surrounded by condensed fibrous tissue. We report two cases of nodular cystic fat necrosis associated with history of trauma about the site of the lesion. Each lesion was a subcutaneous movable nodule on buttock (case 1) and shin (case 2) which has evolved over months. Both cases showed possible relation to multiple intramuscular injection or direct trauma injury. Pathologically, encapsulated nodule showed a characteristic feature of nodular cystic fat necrosis which composed of the ghosts of anucleated adipocytes showing fairly well-preserved outline.

The nasal ala is a challenging area for surgical reconstruction, with thick sebaceous skin, the lack of an ample tissue reservoir, and an adjacent free margin. Numerous flaps have been reported for the repair of alae defects. A 71-year-old woman with simultaneous basal cell carcinomas involving both nasal alae was treated by Mohs micrographic surgery. The surgical defects measured 1.5x1.5 cm on the center of the right nasal ala and 1.0x1.0 cm on the left nasal ala, including the alar crease and rim. The right nasal ala was used as a nasolabial transposition flap and the left nasal ala was reconstructed by an island pedicle flap. The final shape and texture were satisfactory. The flaps survived and nasal symmetry was preserved. Combined nasolabial transposition and island pedicle flaps thus offer a superior esthetic and functional result owing to minimized tension. This may be a valuable reconstructive option in the repair of bilateral nasal alae defects.
