1.Cross-reactivity between sera from dogs experimentally infected with Dirofilaria immitis and crude extract of Toxocara canis.

This study was performed to investigate whethere there is cross-reactivity between Dirofilaria immitis and three intestinal nematodes of dogs. In ELISA, D. immitis-infected dog sera obtained at the 4th molting stage (9-11 weeks) and microfilaremic stage (25-30 weeks) were shown to be highly reactive with crude extract of T. canis. In immunoblotting, some antigenic fractions, 44, 57, 88, 100 kDa of crude extract of T. canis, were found to be positive reaction with sera of dogs infected with D. immitis. However, little or no cross-reaction were observed between sera of D. immitis-infected dogs and crude extract antigen of T. vulpis or A. caninum. These result suggest that there are partial cross reaction between sera of D. immitis-infected dogs and the antigen of T. canis.

2.Detection of canine distemper virus (CDV) through one step RT-PCR combined with nested PCR.

A one step reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) combined nested PCR was set up to increase efficiency in the diagnosis of canine distemper virus (CDV) infection after developement of nested PCR. Two PCR primer sets were designed based on the sequence of nucleocapsid gene of CDV Onderstepoort strain. One-step RT-PCR with the outer primer pair was revealed to detect 10(2) PFU/ml. The sensitivity was increased hundredfold using the one-step RT-PCR combined with the nested PCR. Specificity of the PCR was also confirmed using other related canine virus and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and body secretes of healthy dogs. Of the 51 blood samples from dogs clinically suspected of CD, 45 samples were revealed as positive by one-step RT-PCR combined with nested PCR. However, only 15 samples were identified as positive with a single one step RT-PCR. Therefore approximately 60% increase in the efficiency of the diagnosis was observed by the combined method. These results suggested that one step RT-PCR combined with nested PCR could be a sensitive, specific, and practical method for diagnosis of CDV infection.

3.A Case of Cutaneous Metastasis from Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder.

Metastases to the skin from internal malignancy are very rare and have been reported to occur in 0.9% to 8% of patients with cancer. Particularly there are few cutaneous metastatic carcinomas from the urinary bladder and their incidence is 1% to 2% of the cutaneous metastasis. A 76-year-old man developed cutaneous metastasis six months later after the diagnosis of carcinoma of the bladder had been made. He was presented with asymptomatic erythematous indurated plaques on the left thigh and the inguinal area. This lesion was diagnosed histologically as poorly differentiated transitional cell carcinoma. We report a case of cutaneous metastasis from carcinoma of the urinary bladder showing the unusual clinical feature of an erythematous indurated plaque.

4.Cardiovascular repair with bone marrow-derived cells.

While bone marrow (BM)-derived cells have been comprehensively studied for their propitious pre-clinical results, clinical trials have shown controversial outcomes. Unlike previously acknowledged, more recent studies have now confirmed that humoral and paracrine effects are the key mechanisms for tissue regeneration and functional recovery, instead of transdifferentiation of BM-derived cells into cardiovascular tissues. The progression of the understanding of BM-derived cells has further led to exploring efficient methods to isolate and obtain, without mobilization, sufficient number of cell populations that would eventually have a higher therapeutic potential. As such, hematopoietic CD31+ cells, prevalent in both bone marrow and peripheral blood, have been discovered, in recent studies, to have angiogenic and vasculogenic activities and to show strong potential for therapeutic neovascularization in ischemic tissues. This article will discuss recent advancement on BM-derived cell therapy and the implication of newly discovered CD31+ cells.

5.Prosthetic rehabilitation of the edentulous patients using O-ring attachment: A clinical report.

A successful prosthesis is difficult to produce without using the implants in the severely resorbed alveolar ridges and maxillofacial defects. This report describes clinical experience of the overdenture using O-ring attachment. Clinical results have revealed successful application for the O-ring attachment in the two edentulous patients and a partial maxillectomy patient.

Ameloblastoma is the most agrressive ofht odontogenic tumors and it arises from the dental lamina or the derivatives of lamina. Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally invasive neoplasm consisting of proliferating odontogenic epithelium lying in a fibrous stroma. Usually the ameloblastomas are diagnosed in the forth and fifth decardes. Over 80% of them occur in the mandible, the remainder in the maxilla. The preferred treatment for ameloblastoma is radical excision, conserving(when possible) the inferior border of the mandible. The functional and esthetic rehabilitation of the partially edentulous patient may prevent the remaining structures from supporting conventional prosthetic treatment. Patients with long edentulous spans, malpositioned teeth, residual ridges defects and high muscle attachments may be offered an osseointegrated fixed prosthesis. Osseointegrated dental implants provide a viable alternative of tooth replacement. This is a case report of 16 year old female with ameloblastoma. We treated patient with radical excision, conserving the inferior border of the mandible and allogenous bone graft. The defected residual ridge area was reconstructed implants(Steri-Oss Implant System). the result was satisfactory.

7.A Case of Congenitally Developed Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia areata is a common cause of acquired circumscribed alopecia in childhood. In infancy alopecia areata is exceptional. No case of congenital alopecia areata has been documented yet. Thus, it is generally assumed that alopecia areata is acquired only postnatally, and it is believed that the presence of an alopecia at birth virtually excludes the diagnosis of alopecia areata. In this report, we document a case of congenitally developed alopecia areata that shows typical clinical and histological features of alopecia areata.
