1.The Use fulness of OCTOptical Coherence Tomographyfor the Diagnosis of Central Serous Choriore tinopathy.

This study aimed to assess the potential usefulness of optical coherence tomography[OCT]for the diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy. OCT was used to examine 50 patients[50 eyes]whose initial examination disclosed the clinical diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy. Optical coherence tomographic section acquired directly through the fovea showed an increase of the neurosensory retina above an optically clear space corresponding to a fluid-filled cavity. Serial OCT were able to demonstrate a decrease in the sensory retina elevation from[900~120]micrometer t o [130~0]micrometer for 3 months of period. This resolution correlated with an improvement in the patient's visual acuity. OCT is potentially useful as a new, noninvasive diagnostic technique for quantitative examination by objectively monitoring the degree of serous retinal detachment in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy.

2.A Case of Fibrous Histiocytoma in Cornea and Corneosclerallimbus.

Fibrous histiocytoma are complex group of tumors that feature cells resembling fibroblasts and histiocytes.In a case of fibrous histiocytoma involving the cornea and corneolimbus, we evaluated the finding of H-E, Masson-trichrome, reticulin, CD68, alpha-1-antitrypsin antibody and smooth muscle actin antibody stain after the localized excision in 26 years old male patient. In H-E stain, tumor cell included many multinucleated giant cells having abundant eosinophilic and foamy cytoplasm infiltreated by numerous lymphocyte, CD68 & alpha-1-antit-rypsin antibody staining resulted in diffuusely positive finding. Therefore examination. Good result was noted after complete excision at 6 month follow-up.

3.A Clinical Analysis of Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: The pediatric CPR is rather uncommon practice than adult CPR in emergency room. Therefore, few interest and studies were focused in pediatric CPR. The object of this study is to make an analysis about pediatric CPR performed within hospital setting. METHOD: From January 1. 1990 to December 31. 1996, a total of 59 patients, less than 15-year-old, who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation were subject of this study. The study was done retrospective chart analysis for sex, age, weight, the place of cardiac arrest, initial EKG rhythms, endotracheal tube size, the causes of arrest, CPR time, ROSC, the amount and types of CPR drugs used during resuscitation. Wilcoxon rank sum test and chi2 test were used to compare the dose of drugs during CPR in each group. RESULTS: There were no statistical difference between ROSC and non-ROSC group in place of arrest, initial EKG rhythms, CPR time, dosage of CPR drugs. CONCLUSION: The uniform reporting guideline of pediatric advanced life support should be used for future pediatric CPR study, such as Utstein style guideline in pediatric CPR.

4.A Study on the Proteins that Interact with Human Nebulin SH3 Domain.

OBJECTIVE: bjective: By identifying the unknown substance responsible for binding with nebulin SH3 domain within the sarcomeric Z-line, we tried to find out Z-line structure which plays an important role on muscle contraction and maintenance of muscle funtion. METHOD: First, the bait plasmid was made by binding the DNA binding domain of Gal4 protein of yeast and the SH3 domain. Second, library plasmid was made by binding activation domain and human skeletal cDNA library. Then, the base sequence of the clone, produced by combining the two proteins expressed by transgenically converted plasmid in yeast, was analyzed. RESULT: We screened out six true positive clones and analyzed the base sequence of the two of six clones. We identified them to be alpha-actinin2. CONCLUSION: We can theorize that Neublin SH3 domain and alpha-actinin2 plays a vital role for the integration of Z-line. Thus, this is an important data in further studying muscle functions, mechanisms, and muscular disease as well.

7.Effect of Pyroligneous Liquor on Oxygen Radicals and Their Scavenger Enzymes in Liver of CD Rats.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of pyroligneous liquor on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzy-mes in the liver of Cri/Bgi CD rats (7 rats per group ). Male rats were fed a basic diet prepared in our Lab., PL-0 (Control ), PL-1, PL-25, PL-50 and PL-75 groups were prepared to be 0%, 1%, 25%, 50% and 75%with distilled water using pyrolig-neous liquor (35% of Choa Co. Ltd.), and were administrated orally for 8 weeks. Superoxide radical contents in liver mi-tochondria and microsomes were significantly decreased to 12-14%, 11-15%, respectively, in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. Hydroxyl radical content in mitochondria and microsomes were markedly decreased to 12-20% and 17%, respectively, in these PL-25 and PL-50% groups compared with the control group. Hydro-gen peroxide content in mitochondria and microsomes were significantly decreased about 15-12% and 22-20% in liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. Mn-SOD and Cu/Zn-SOD activities in liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups were remarkably increased to 15-25%, 11-16%, respectively, compared with the control group. GPx activities in mitochondria and microsomes were significantly increased in the liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. CAT activities in mitochondria and cytosol were significantly increased to 12-14%, 15-27%, respectively, in the liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. These results suggest that long term administra-tion orally of 25 and 50% pyroligneous liquor may effectively inhibit the formation of oxygen free radicals, and also scavenger enzyme activities significantly increase through the administration orally.

In so-called primary osteoarthritic knees, there may be secondary osteoarthritis due to the instability from chronic cruciate ligament and/or meniscal tear. The purpose of this study is to compare the findings of bone single-photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) and those of simple radiography in osteoarthritic knees which we consider as primary on the status of anterior cruciate ligament(ACL). We reviewed the preoperative bone SPECT and simple radiography of forty-three osteoarthritic knees in 23 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty between 1995 and l996. We divided the cases into two groups on the status of ACL: thirty intact ACLs(Group I), thirteen insufficient ACLs(Group II). Meniscal tear and/or ACL insufficiency were found in 38 of 43 knees, As regards with presence of osteophytes and sclerotic changes on simple radiograph, there was no significant differences between group I and II. Joint space narrowing was more prominent and diffuse in group I(medial 29, lateral 24) than group II(medial 7, lateral 6). Bone SPECT showed diffuse uptake in group I(medial 30, lateral 23), but less uptake on the lateral compartment(medial 13, lateral 3) in group II. In ACL-intact osteoarthritic knees, joint space narrowing on simple radiograph and hot uptake on bone SPECT were more prominent and diffuse than in ACL-insufficient knees. Clinical relevance is still uncertain and further investigation is needed.

10.Effect of Pyroligneous Liquor on Lipid Metabolism in Serum of CD Rats.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of pyroligneous liquor on lipid metaboilsm in serum of SPF/VAF Cri/ Bgi CD rats. Male CD rats were fed basic diet prepared in our Lab., and PL-0 ( control) , PL-1, PL-25, PL-50, PL-75 groups were prepared with pyroligneous liquor ( 35% of Choa Co. Ltd.) of 0%, 1%, 25%, 50% and 75% in purified water per day for 8 weeks. Body weights and food intakes almost did not change in these five groups, and triglyceride ( TG) levels were significantly decreased ( 20.5% and 19.5%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Total and LDL-cholesterol levels were markedly decreased ( 20.7%, 16.3% and 20.3 %, 116.9%, respecti-vely) in these PL-25 and PL-50% groups, but HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased about 36.4% and 25.5% in serum of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Atherogenic indices were also remarkedly decreased ( 63.0%, and 50%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that long term administration orally of pyroligneous liquor in 25 to 50% may inhibit chronic degenerative disease through improving of lipid metabolism of lower TG & LDL-cholesterol and higher HDL-cholesterol, and lower AJ.
