Objective To explore the prevalence and physician's recognition of depression and anxiety disorder in gastrointestinal out-patients of three tertiary general hospitals in Beijing. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in the gastrointestinal out-patient departments of three tertiary general hospitals in Beijing from May to June 2007. Total 517 subjects were recruited consecutively within a one month period. All the subjects were screened with Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS). The subjects with HADS score of 8 and over were interviewed and diagnosed by psychiatrists using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The physicians made the diagnosis and management without knowing the results of MINI and HADS score. Results Among the 517 cases, 301 had a HADS score of 8 and above and 244 were interviewed by psychiatrists; the response rate was 81.1%. The prevalence according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth edition of depressive disorders and anxiety disorders in gastrointestinal outpatients were 15.3%, depressive disorders were 12. 0%, anxiety disorders were 6. 4%, depression combined anxiety disorder was 3. 0%. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, depression combined anxiety were not different between genders (x2 = 0. 874, x2 = 1.797,x2 =0.518, P >0.05) and among different age group ( 18-34, 35-54, ≥55 years old) (x2 = 1. 084,2 = 2. 735, 2 = 0. 350, P 0. 05 ). Gastritis and gastrointestinal dysfunction were the major diagnoses in patients with depression and/or anxiety disorders, the rates were 30. 6% and 26. 4% respectively. The rate of identification of depression and anxiety disorder by physicians was 2. 8%. Conclusion Gastrointestinal out-patients have a high prevalence of depression and anxiety disorder and the rate of identification by physicians was very low.

To investigate the expressions of placental growth factor (PLGF) in placenta with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), 45 women with HDP and 20 normally pregnant women were studied. Among 45 women with HDP, there were 23 cases of severe preeclampsia and one case of eclampsia. The location and level of PLGF proteins was determined by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The expression of PLGF mRNA in placenta was assessed by reverse transcriptional-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results showed that: (1) The distribution of PLGF in placenta with HDP was similar to normal one, which was mainly in the cytoplasm of villous syncytiotrophoblast and villous stroma; (2) The expression of PLGF protein was significantly decreased in placentas with mild and severe preeclampsia compared to the normal ones (0.3 +/- 0.4 vs 0.6 +/- 0.4, 0.2 +/- 0.5 vs 0.6 +/- 0.4, P < 0.01). There were no differences between the gestational hypertension placenta and normal one (0.5 +/- 0.6 vs 0.6 +/- 0.4, P > 0.05); (3) The transcription levels of the PLGF mRNA in placentas with preeclampsia were significantly lower than in normal groups (3.33 +/- 0.39 vs 4.87 +/- 0.60, 1.97 +/- 0.29 vs 4.87 +/- 0.60, P < 0.01), and no differences were found between the gestational hypertension placenta and normal groups. These findings suggest that the abnormal expression of PLGF in placentas is related to the pathogenesis of HDP.

OBJECTIVE To optimize the parameters of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis(PCA)in rats immunized by ovalbumin(OVA). METHODS 1-2 month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were immu?nized by ip injection of OVA(0.2,1.0 and 5.0 mg per rat)mixed with complete Freund′s adjuvant once every other day 3 times. Serum was collected on the 12th-16th days after final immunization. Then the rats were intracutaneously injected with sensitized serum and then stimulated by iv injection of the same dose of OVA mixed with Evans blue after a latent period of 0.5,1.5,3,6,12,24,36,48 and 60 h. Finally, the diameters of blue spots in the skin were measured at stimulation. RESULTS Serum total-IgE(T-IgE)and OVA-specific IgE(sIgE)levels increased significantly and reached the peak on the 3rd-7th days and 12th-16th days after final immunization, respectively. There was no correlation between the serum T-IgE level and OVA-sIgE level when the rats were immunized with OVA at OVA 0.2-5.0 mg per rat. The rats experienced PCA after injection of OVA 1.0 and 5.0 mg per rat. Diameters of blue spots in the skin reached the maximum value after rats were sensitized for 0.5-3 h. Moreover, the shape, color and size of blue spots were better 30-60 min after stimulation. CONCLUSION Optimized PCA is as follows:1-2 month-old rats are immunized on the 1st,3rd and 5th days by ip injection of OVA 1.0-5.0 mg. The immunizing serum is collected at 12-16 d after final immunization. The rats are stimulated by OVA and Evans blue after a latent period of 0.5-3 h. Diameters of blue spots in rats′ skin are then measured 30-60 min after stimulation.

8.Iodine and thyroid: The discovery of congenital hypothyroidism
Chinese Journal of Perinatal Medicine 2024;27(6):525-528
This paper meticulously traces the discovery of congenital hypothyroidism. Throughout the history of medical science, civilizations around the world have documented cases of iodine deficiency goiter and cretinism. However, the relationship between iodine and goiter was not recognized until the early 19th century in Europe. Anatomical knowledge and clinical practice concerning the thyroid gland deepened, by the end of the 19th century, European physicians confirmed that a malfunction in thyroid could lead to cretinism. Following discussions and studies by doctors from various European countries, the modern medical term "congenital hypothyroidism" was intially used in the United Kingdom, replacing "cretinism", and then widely accepted.
9.Global history of screening for congenital hypothyroidism
Chinese Journal of Perinatal Medicine 2024;27(7):603-606
This article outlines the global history of newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism (CH), starting from the spread of medical knowledge and technology across the world. It is believed that the inception of CH screening programs greatly benefited from research linking thyroid dysfunction and intellectual impairment in the late 19th century, coupled with the discovery of thyroxine in the early 20th century. By the early 1970s, Professor Jean H. Dussault in Quebec, Canada, had conducted the first large-scale newborn CH screening program. As CH screening technologies have developed and spread globally, China has made significant progress in this area. Since the initial efforts in the early 1980s, there has been substantial increase in the national screening rate in recent years. However, China still confronts challenges due to regional disparities.

Chinese Journal of Experimental and Clinical Virology 2021;35(1):116-120
T follicular regulatory cell (Tfr) is a unique subset of CD4 + T cells discovered in recent years. They are derived from T regulatory cell (Treg) and presenting simultaneously similar biological characteristics of Treg cell and T follicular helper cell (Tfh). Tfr cell are mainly manifested as participating in the regulation of Tfh cell and B cell differentiation in the lymph node germinal center (GC), assisting in the screening of high-affinity antibodies and preventing the production of autoantibodies, ensuring immune homeostasis. This article describes the research progress in the biological characteristics and functions of Tfr cell, and summarized the role of Tfr cell in the antibody response after virus infection and vaccine immunization. The aim is to deeply understand the immune regulation mechanism of antibody production and maturation after virus infection, to provide insight for virus vaccine design and immune strategy evaluation.
