Objective To investigate retrospectively the clinical characteristics of hospitalized ulcerative colitis(UC)patients of our department, and evaluate the diagnosis and treatment. Methods The cases of UC patients from 1989 to Jun 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. We analyzed the patients' symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Results There were 155 cases reviewed. The sex ratio(M/F)was 1.54∶ 1. The average age of patients was 41.8. The peak age of onset was 20~30. 32.3% of our cases were mild type, and 41.3% were moderate type, severe type were 26.5%. Of these pateints,52.9% were pancolitis, and 39.4% were chronic recurrent type, which was very common. Most cases(72.9%)were diagnosed by clinic combined with endoscope and pathology. Most of the severe UC responded well to the drug therapy. Very less(4.5%)had to underwent surgery. No patient died. Conclusion Most of our patients are mild or moderate type, and they respond well to drug some severe and moderate types need steroids and immuno suppressor. The extracolonic manifestation rate(12.9%)and operation rate(4.5%)are low.

Objective:To investigate the characteristic of life events and social support in patients with major depression. Methods:A cohort of 96 major depressed in-patients was assessed on admission. The assessments included Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Life Events Scale and the Social Support Scale. Ninety-nine healthy subjects were assessed too. Results:Compared with the controls, the patients experienced more stressful life events and got more subjective social support, but the utilization of social support was lower in the patient group. There was no gender difference in the life events and social support. The patients experiencing more life events got less subjective social support and social support as a whole. Conclusions:The depressed patients experience more life events.Social support acts as one of the cushion factors between life events and the onset of major depression.

Objective To analyze the cause of missing diagnosis for vertebral fracture on lateral chest radiography. Methods Lateral chest radiographies of 1638 hospitalized patients (871 males and 767 females) were retrospectively reviewed for identifying vertebral fractures. Their ages ranged from 50 to 91 years with the mean of 63.5 years. Complains and application for chest radiography in all patients were not related to osteoporosis and vertebral fracture. Vertebral fracture and fracture severity were evaluated using Genant's semiquantitative visual method, taking approximately a 20%-25% vertebral height reduction as mild grade,26%-40% as moderate grade and 41% or greater as severe grade. Evaluation results of the vertebral fracture, original X-ray reports, as well as medical records were compared for further analysis. Results Eighty-four in 1638 patients showed vertebral fractures on the lateral chest radiographies. Of them, vertebral fractures were reported in 30 cases and 54 patients were not reported on their original X-ray reports. There were 63 vertebral fractures in 54 un-reported patients, most of which were single fracture (75% or 47/63). Grade Ⅰ fracture accounted for 54% (34/63), Grade Ⅱ fracture 33% (21/63), while 13% presented grade Ⅲ fracture (8/63). In all 84 patients with vertebral fractures, only 5 cases (6%)underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement, 5 cases ( 6% ) were recorded to have vertebral fractures on the medical papers, as well as 15 cases ( 18% ) were prescribed drugs related to the osteoporosis when discharged from hospital All drugs prescribed for the 15 patients were limited only to calcium. Conclusions More attention should be paid to osteoporosis by doctors including radiologists.Vertebral fracture on lateral chest radiography should be completely diagnosed, which is helpful for both prevention and treatment.

Objective To observe the effects of the preconditioning of ulinastatin on GES-1 cell injury induced by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD). Methods GES-1 cells were cultured in vitro and divided into three groups: normal control group (group N), oxygen and glucose deprivation group (group O), and ulinastatin preconditioning group (group U). The OGD model of GES-1 cells were established by glucose-free medium and three-gas incubator for 6h. Ulinastatin was added to group U 12h before the deprivation of oxygen and glucose. The cell viability and apoptosis were determined by cck-8 and flow cytometry respectively. Western Blot was used to examine the protein expression of Caspase-3 and Cleaved Caspase-3. The TRPV1 mRNA expression was measured by quantitative real-time PCR. Results As compared with group N, the viability of GES-1 was decreased, the apoptotic rate and the expression of Caspase-3 and Cleaved Caspase-3 were increased, and the TRPV1 mRNA expression decreased greatly in group O (P < 0.05). As compared with group O, the aforementioned changes were significantly inhibited in group U. Conclusions Ulinastatin preconditioning could effectively inhibit GES-1 cell injury induced by OGD, which may be related to the inhibition of apoptosis and the upregulation of TRPV1 mRNA expression.
