Objective:To investigate the characteristic of life events and social support in patients with major depression. Methods:A cohort of 96 major depressed in-patients was assessed on admission. The assessments included Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Life Events Scale and the Social Support Scale. Ninety-nine healthy subjects were assessed too. Results:Compared with the controls, the patients experienced more stressful life events and got more subjective social support, but the utilization of social support was lower in the patient group. There was no gender difference in the life events and social support. The patients experiencing more life events got less subjective social support and social support as a whole. Conclusions:The depressed patients experience more life events.Social support acts as one of the cushion factors between life events and the onset of major depression.

BACKGROUND: Microspheric injectable scaffold has a perspective in cartilage tissue engineering; however, it is still limited by in vivo hard forming and microsphere transmigration.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of self-assembly scaffolds by attaching negatively charged calcium alginate microspheres and positively charged chitosan microspheres by electrostatic force. METHODS: The calcium alginate and chitosan microspheres were prepared by emulsion-internal gelation and spray drying technique, respectively. The characterizations of the microspheres were determined by means of scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and zeta potential analysis methods. Self-assembly scaffolds were fabricated by mixing the aqueous suspensions of the microspheres with oppositely charged surfaces. The phenomenon of electrostatic attachment was characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the elastic compress modulus of the scaffolds was also investigated.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The average diameter of the calcium alginate microspheres was 52.5 μm, and the chitosan one was 4.1 μm, respectively. The zeta-potential of the calcium alginate microspheres was 23.5 mv, and the chitosan one was +9.8 mv, respectively. The microspheres were spherical and smooth. The small size chitosan microspheres could attach to the surface of the calcium alginate microspheres and anchor the calcium alginate microspheres together. The elastic compress modulus increased with the increase of solid content of the microspheres, but decreased with the increase of the ionic strength. The elastic compress modulus increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of the mass ratio of m (CHI):m (ALG), and it showed the highest elastic compress modulus when m (CHI):m (ALG) was 2:1. The positively charged chitosan microspheres could attach to the negatively calcium alginate microspheres to form a self-assembly scaffold.

BACKGROUND: Contingent negative variation (CNV) is a kind of cerebral evoked potential, which is closely related with mental medicine and psychology.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the different manifestations between patients with affective disorder and normal adults in CNV detection.DESIGN: Case-control trial.SETTING: Department of Function, Psychiatric Hospital of Zibo, Shandong Province.PARTICIPANTS: Totally 29 inpatients and outpatients including 14 males and 15 females with affective disorder in the Fifth People's Hospital of Zibo between February 2005 and January 2006 were selected. The guardians were all informed and agreed the content; the diagnosed criteria of the patients were accorded wit h the criteria of DSM-Ⅳ. According to their mental status when hospitalized, the patients were divided into manic episode group and depressive episode group. There were 11 cases in the manic episode group, whose scores of Bech-Rataelson Mania Scale (BRMS)>16; there were 18 cases in the depressive episode group, including unipolar depression (without history of mania episode) and bipolar depression (with history of mania episode) whose Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD)scores > 24. A total of 27 healthy hospital staff were selectedas control group including 14 males and 13 females aged 21-53 years and the mean age was (32.5±5.9) years. There was no significant difference in the age and sex among the three groups.METHODS: The CNV test was carried out in a soundproof room. Seating on a soft chair, the subject kept vigilant and focused on a fixed point in the front. The platinum electrode of 8 mm was attached to the subject's vertex Cz according to the International 10/20 System, referred to the right mastoid. The middle point of 2 eyebrows was grounded. The CNV waveforms were described by a L2-3 XY Functional Plotter. Standard CNV was composed of light signal and click signal. The flashlight and loudspeaker were located at the right back of the examinee. The subject was asked to press the button with his right finger to cut off the short sound as soon as his ears received the imperative click. It would take 2 500 ms for one CNV trial, and 20 trials as one experiment. Every subject was given the experiment for twice, and the standard amplitude was set by inputting a standard voltage of 20 μV to the same recording system.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The CNV latency, amplitude B, area of negative expectancy wave before command signal, and area of negative change post-imperative negative variation (PINV) latency of the subjects in the two groups.RESULTS: All the 56 patients were involved in the result analysis.Compared with the control group, the mania group showed higher CNV amplitude [(22.8±4.8) μV; (16.0±5.7) μV; P < 0.01], and the depression group presented smaller A-S2 area [(292.8±161.6)μV2; (412.8±159.9) μV2;P < 0.01], and prolonged PINV latency [(261.9±79.3), (211.9±36.3) ms; P< 0.05]. The prolonged PINV latency was found in the unipolar depression group compared with the bipolar depression group [(344.5 ±66.9),(230.4±83.8) ms; P < 0.01].CONCLUSION: CNV and PINV suggest that prolonged latency is the trait maker of the patients with unipolar depression, and CNV amplitude changes belong to the state makers of affective disorder.

AIM To prepare lung targeted tetrandrine (TET) loaded sustained-release drug delivery system by microencapsulation, decrease the toxicity and enhance the therapeutic function of anti-pulmonary hypertension of TET. METHODS Albumin microcapsules were produced by spray drying-thermal denaturation, a new technique. Some characterization of the prepared microcapsules was evaluated. Distribution of the microcapsules and their anti-pulmonary hypertension effect in vivo were investigated. RESULTS The spherical microcapsules showed a drug loading of 37.88%. Compared to the original drug, the rate of TET released from the positively charged microcapsules in vitro was significantly decreased and fitted well by Higuchi equation. The TET concentrations in mouse lungs of TET microcapsules were significantly higher than those of TET injection, and the mean retained time of TET in lungs was prolonged from 157.1 h to 223.6 h after microencapsulation. The in vitro - in vivo correlation was established and confirmed (P<0.001). CONCLUSION The new spray drying-thermal denaturation method allows the preparation of drug loaded albumin microcapsules with desired results. The prepared microcapsules were found to have the potential function of delivering TET to pulmonary artery via iv, with low toxicity and high efficacy.
