1.Clinical analysis of lingual tonsillar hypertrophy on 34 cases
Chinese Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery 2001;8(2):76-77
Thirty-four patients with chronic lingual tonsillar hypertrophy were treated in our department from 1994 to 2000. There were 18 males and 16 females ranging in age from 21 to 60 years old. The clinical feature of lingual tonsillar hypertrophy usually appeared a series of pharyngeal symptoms, such as foreign-body sensation, sore throat, speech change, difficulty in swallowing, dysapnea and obstructive sleep apnea. The CO2 laser surgical lingual tonsillectomy was used for these patients. Result showed that the cure rate was 100% without any serious complications by following up 2 months to 3 years. The variety of presentations of lingual tonsillar hypertrophy and methods of surgical treament were discussed.

Acta Universitatis Medicinalis Anhui 2001;(2):129-130
Objective To assay serum cortisol concentration in type 2 diabetic patients and evaluate the relationship between serum cortisol concentration and insulin resistance. Methods Serum cortisol concentrations were measured at 8 am, 4 pm and during oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) in 60 newly-onset type 2 diabetic patients and 40 healthy subjects using RIA. Results ① Sernm cortisol concentrations were elevated in obese type 2 diabetic patients at 8 am and 4 pm as compared with non-obese patients and normal controls. ② Changes of serum cortisol concentration during OGTT were different between obese type 2 diabetic and non-obese patients: serum cortisol concentrations were decreased after glucose administration in non-obese patients but not in obese patients. ③ In type 2 diabetic patients, serum cortisol concentrations were negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity index (r=-0.34, P<0.01). Conclusion There is some degree of abnormal in cortisol secretion in obese type 2 diabetic patients.

Objective To explore the electrophysiological and clinical features of various subtypes of Guillain Barr? syndrome (GBS). Methods The electrophysiological and clinical data of 100 cases with GBS admitted to Xijing Hospital from 1980 to 1999 were analyzed retrospectively. Correlations between varied subtypes and ages were examined by ? 2 test. Results Among the 100 patients with GBS, the demyelinating pattern was present in 51 patients, the axonal pattern in 25 patients, and 8 patients were inexcitable, 12 patients equivocal and 4 patients normal. The demyelinating pattern appeared as a major subtype not only in different age groups, but also in different test times after symptom onset. There was no statistically significant relationship between varied subtypes and ages. In the 100 patients, 32.0% suffered from a preceding upper respiratory infection, and 22.0% had a preceding gastrointestinal tract infection. The cases occurring in rural areas are almost in number equal to those in urban areas. That is, there was no a clear area distribution. Both demylinating and axonal GBS occurred throughout the year with a likely peak from July to September. Conclusion In the 100 patients with GBS admitted to Xijing Hospital, the demyelinating pattern was the major electrophysiological subtype. In addition, the electrophysiological and clinical features of various subtypes of GBS seemed to be different in some ways from those in the studies of both western countries and Li CY in northern China.

Journal of Peking University(Health Sciences) 2003;0(06):-
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is the integration of both assisted reproductive technologiesand molecular genetic technologies.Since the birth of the first healthy females after PGD in 1990,re-markable advances have been achieved in this field. Most research in PGD is focused on new methods toimprove the sensitivity and accuracy of single cell analysis. The principal problems in single cell PCR in-clude amplification failure,ADO and contamination.Fluorescent PCR with multiplex amplifications ofhighly polymorphic markers is a highly effective strategy to avoid contamination and detect ADO.The ad-vantages and disadvantages of fluorescence in situ hybridization to detect age-related aneuploidy are stillunder debate. We summarize the most recent developments in this review, and also introduce our own ex-periences in PGD.

Objective To assess the usefulness of a computer-aided detection(CAD)system on detecting the pulmonary nodules in digital chest radiography. Methods Three hundred and twenty-eight digital chest radiographies along with corresponding chest computed tomography were selected for this study. Two senior chest radiologists interpreted these cases using the CAD system and marked the locations and sizes of all nodules with consensus, which were stored in a computer system as Gold Standard to evaluate the performance of the CAD system.Eight radiologists of various experience read these selected cases without and with the aid of CAD system and their results were stored in a computer system. The radiologists' performance was evaluated by using the receiver operating characteristic analysis.Comparison is made regarding the difference in Az values when CAD was not used versus when CAD was used by using the paired-samples t test. Results For small nodules, the sensitivity of this computer system used by the two senior chest radiologists in 100 digital radiographs was 78.1%(118.0/151).Without and with the assistance of CAD system, the nodule detection sensitivity of the radiology residents was 62.4% (94.2/151),77.4%(116.8/151)respectively,and the area under the curve of radiology residents was 0.769,0.836 respectively.Statistical analysis showed there was statistically significant difference between interpretation without and with the CAD system(P0.05).Conclusions This CAD system can help to enhance the radiologists' ability to detect small pulmonary nodules. This is especially helpful for radiology residents.

24 cases of hypoparathyroidism, 24 cases of normal control were included. The levels of enzymes, concentration of Ca were measured in all cases. The electrocardiogram was carried out in the hypoparathyroidism group carries. The levels of CK, CK-MB, BHDH, LDH and AST were significantly higher in patients with hypoparathyroidism than in normal control cases(P<0.05), especially the levels of CK and CK-MB (P<0.01). After the treatment, the electrocardiogram and enzymes basically returned to normal. The changes of enzymes in patients with hypoparathyroidism may play a benchmark about the severity and treatment.
