BACKGROUND:Acute poisoning is frequently encountered at emergency department. This study was to investigate the epidemiology and characteristics of patients with acute poisoning who were treated at the Emergency Center, Fujian Provincial Hospital, China. METHODS:We retrospectively analyzed the gender, age, causes of poisoning, types of poisons, poisoning route, emergency diagnoses, outcomes, and prognoses of these patients. RESULTS:Altogether 2867 patients with acute poisoning were treated from January 2004 to December 2009. The ratio of male to female was 1:1.04, and their average age was 33.8 years. Of the 2867 patients, 76.39% were between 18 and 40 years old. The incidence of acute poisoning was as high as 11.33% in January each year. The incidence of poisoning was in a descending order:alcohol poisoning (54.55%), medication poisoning (25.95%), pesticide poisoning (5.65%), and drug poisoning (4.88%). Most (56.44%) of the patients with drug poisoning were under 25 years and their mean age was significantly lower than that of patients with medication poisoning or alcohol poisoning (P < 0.01). Approximately 69.54% of the patients were followed up after emergency treatment, 30.39% were hospitalized, and four patients died. CONCLUSIONS:Acute poisoning is largely alcohol poisoning and medication poisoning in a city. The emergency green channel "pre-hospital emergency care-emergency department-hospital treatment"can significantly improve the survival rate of patients with acute poisoning.

BackgroundThe meibomian gland carcinoma is an eyelid malignant tumor with a domestic incidence after basal cell carcinoma.Meibomian gland carcinoma is not sensitive to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and the related factors with its recurrence and metastasis are rarely reported.ObjectiveThis study was to investigate the clinical and pathologic features of meibomian gland carcinoma with multiple operations and the effectiveness of histologically controlled excision.MethodsThe clinical data and the histopathologic sections of 34 cases of the meibomian gland carcinoma diagnosed by pathology were retrospectively analyzed at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center in September 2003 to April 2011,and the treating effectiveness of histologically controlled excision was evaluated. ResultsIn this group of cases, the appearing rate of the meibomian gland carcinoma was resemble in both lateral eyes.A higher morbidity was on the upper eyelid (26/34,76.5%) and then the lower eyelids (5/34,14.7% ) and both (3/34,8.8%).The average ages of these cases were 57.5 years old.Sixteen of 21 misdiagnosed cases were identified as chalazion at the first visit, and no histopathological examination was performed in 11 cases after initial operation.Twenty-six cases(76.5% )were identified as meibomian gland carcinoma in initial histopathologic diagnosis. Two cases had histologically controlled excision and 16 cases had simple excision while 16 cases had chalazion enucleation in the first operation. All the patients had histologically controlled excision in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center with 58.8% of the patients having pagetoid invasion.Sixteen cases were followed up for 5 months to 8 years after histologically controlled excision,in which none died of recurrence and metastasis of meibomian gland carcinoma. No significant differences were found in the pathological feature between 16 lost patients and 18 followed-up patients(P > 0.05 ).Conclusions Misdiagnosis of meibomian gland as chalazion is a main cause of repeat operations of meibomian gland carcinoma.Histologically controlled excision is a feasible therapy for the recurrence and metastasis of meibomian gland carcinoma.

Background Cellular autophagy is a non-apoptosis death form of tumor tissue.Research determined that arsenie trioxide (As2O3) leads to apoptosis of tumor cells. But whether As2O3 induce autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells or not is unclear. Objective This study was to assess the effects of As2O3 on autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells. Methods As2O3 with the concentration of 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L was used to treat the SO-Rb50 cell line for 48 hours, and the growth and proliferation of SO-Rb50 cells were detected using MTT assay (A570).pGFP-LC3,a marker of autophagy, was constructed to transfer SO-Rb50 cells, and the cells were then divided into RPMI-1640 culture group (untreated group),As2O3 + RPMI-1640 culture group (As2O3 treated group) and rapamycin culture group (positive control group).Autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells was examined by laser confocal microscope and monodansylcadaverine (MDC) influorescence staining,respectively,48 hours following cell culture.Ultrastructural features of autophagy were examined with transmission electron microscope (TEM).The percentage of autophagy positive cells in different concentrations of As2O3 treated groups was calculated with flow cytometer. Results The A570 values of SO-Rb50 cells were 2.194±0.066,1.841 ±0.213,1.035±0.046,0.374±0.042 and 0.167±0.019 in 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 treated groups, with a significant difference among these 5 groups(F=547.636,P<0.05),and those of 0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 treated groups were significantly reduced in comparison with untreated group (P =0.000).The positive granular spots for GFP-LC3 chimeric protein were seen to aggregate in autophagic vacuoles in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group, but diffuse cytoplasmic signal for GFP-LC3 was found in the untreated group.Normal ultrastructure of SO-Rb50 cells was exhibited in the untreated group, and many double-membrane-like bound vesicles and autlysosomes were documented in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group under the TEM.A lots of MDC fluorescence granule were found in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group rather than the untreated group.Flow cytometry showed that the percentages of SO-Rb50 cells were 0,15.6%,42.7%,57.9%,79.5% and 89.0% in the 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 groups and positive control group, respectively, showing a As2O3 concentration-dependent increase. Conclusions As2O3 can induce the autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells and inhibit the proliferation of SO-Rb50 cells.Autophagic response of SO-Rb50 cells appears prior to the nuclear change after exposed to As2O3.The degree of autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells is associated with As2O3 dose.

Objective Genetic analysis was performed to infer the relationship between hantaviruses carried by Rattus norvegicus from Henan and Neimenggu provinces and the other known hantavirus and the vaccine strain. Methods Total RNA was extracted from lung tissues with Trizol reagent. The complete M and S segment sequences of strains NM133 and Q12 were amplified by RT-PCR. The purified DNA fragments were directly subjected to sequencing, and then to sequence analysis and phylogenetic analysis. Results The complete S segment sequences of strains NM133 and Q12 were found to be 1770 nt and 1772 nt in length respectively, with one open reading frame encoding 429 amino acids. The complete M segment sequences of both two strains are 3654 nucleotide in length encoding a protein of 1133 amino acids. The two strains shared a high degree of homology with most of known Seoul virus (SEOV) but quite different from Hantaan virus and other hantaviruses. Furthermore, the nucleoprotein and glycoprotein of the two strains had the congruent structure with the vaccine strain Z37. On the S- and M-phylogenetic trees, both strains (NM133 and Q12) were grouped into the first cluster of SEOV, and were more closely related to the strains, such as: Hb8610, R22, HB55, L99, and K24-e7. Conclusion Both strains (NM133 and Q12) belonged to SEOV, and sharing a high degree of homology and similar secondary structure with strains including the vaccine strains Z37, our data suggested that the present vaccine used in China could effectively prevent HFRS caused by SEOV.

Safety and Health at Work 2024;15(2):228-235
Background:
Glove reuse poses risks, as chemicals can persist even after cleaning. Decontamination methods like thermal aeration, recommended by US OSHA, vary in effectiveness. Some studies show promising results, while others emphasize the importance of considering both permeation and tensile strength changes. This research advocates for informed glove reuse, emphasizing optimal thermal aeration temperatures and providing evidence to guide users in maintaining protection efficiency.
Methods:
The investigation evaluated Neoprene and Nitrile gloves (22 mils). Permeation tests with toluene and acetone adhered to American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) F739 standards. Decontamination optimization involved aeration at various temperatures. The experiment proceeded with a maximum of 22 re-exposure cycles. Tensile strength and elongation were assessed following ASTM D 412 protocols. Breakthrough time differences were statistically analyzed using t-test and ANOVA.
Results:
At room temperature, glove residuals decreased, and standardized breakthrough time (SBT)2 was significantly lower than SBT1, indicating reduced protection. Higher temperature decontamination accelerated residual removal, with ΔSBT (SBT2/SBT1) exceeding 100%, signifying restored protection. Tensile tests showed stable neoprene properties postdecontamination. Results underscore thermal aeration's efficacy for gloves reuse, emphasizing temperature's pivotal role. Findings recommend meticulous management strategies, especially post-breakthrough, to uphold glove-protective performance.
Conclusions
Thermal aeration at 100°C for 1 hour proves effective, restoring protection without compromising glove strength. The study, covering twenty cycles, suggests safe glove reuse with proper decontamination, reducing costs significantly. However, limitations in chemical-glove combinations and exclusive focus on specific gloves caution against broad generalization. The absence of regulatory directives on glove reuse highlight the importance of informed selection and rigorous decontamination validation for workplace safety practices.
