Objective:To investigate the relationship between cancer-related fatigue and cortisol in cancer patients and elucidate the underlying mechanism. Methods:A total of 80 cancer cases were divided into two groups:fatigue group (50 cases with cancer-related fatigue) and non-fatigue group (30 cases without fatigue). The scores were evaluated through the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form (MFSI-SF) and the Fatigue Symptom Inventory (FSI) report. Serum specimens were examined through electrochemiluminesence immunoassay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum cholesterol was examined through the CHOD-PAP method, and serum total protein and albumin were determined via the Biuret method. Agarose gel electrophoresis was conducted to determine alpha 2 globulin ratio and to calculate serum alpha 2 globulin concentration. Results: The cortisol level in the fatigue group was significantly lower than that in the non-fatigue group[(119.68±5.34) nmol/L vs. (163.45± 31.49) nmol/L, P<0.05], and the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) level in the fatigue group was significantly higher than that in the non-fatigue group [(104.50 ± 17.15) ng/L vs. (51.43±13.24) ng/L, P<0.05]. Cortisol negatively correlated with MFSI-SF (r=-0.867, P<0.001) but positively correlated with ACTH (r=0.809, P<0.001). Furthermore, cortisol negatively correlated with FSI (r=-0.747, P<0.001) but positively correlated with ACTH (r=0.70, P<0.001). The levels of serum cholesterol [(1.25±0.70) mmol/L vs. (3.28±0.73) mmol/L, P<0.05], albumin[(18.24 ± 7.03) g/L vs. (37.40 ± 8.05) g/L, P<0.05], and alpha-2 globulin [(2.25±1.07) g/L vs. (5.36±1.09) g/L, P<0.05]were significantly lower in the fatigue group than in the non-fatigue group. Conclusion:The patients with cancer-related fatigue exhibited increased MFSI-SF score, decreased serum cortisol level, and enhanced ACTH level. The low serum cortisol levels caused a disorder in the serum ACTH and cancer-related fatigue of malignant tumor patients. The mechanism underlying the reduction in serum cortisol level correlated with the insufficient amounts of serum cholesterol, the composite material of cortisols, and of serum albumin, particularly alpha-2 globulin, the carrier protein of serum cholesterol.

Objective To investigate the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on heparin release of heparinloaded polycaprolactone/polyethylene glycol (PCL/PEG) membranes used in artificial vascular peosthesis. Methods Heparin-loaded PCL/PEG membrane samples with different PEG mass contents of 0,0.5%,10% and 15% were prepared by blending method and freeze-drying technology. The influence of PEG on heparin release was experimental studied in vitro. The influence of PEG on the structural characteristics of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectrum and differential scanning calorimeter. Results The addition of PEG reduced the heparin release resistance. The results showed that the average release rate of heparin in the first day and the release amount for 34 d were improved. Both these parameters increased with the increase of PEG mass content. The X-ray diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry showed that the crystallinity of PCL membrane was slightly enhanced by the addition of heparin, but the overall effect was not significant. In addition, the addition of heparin could promote the crystalline grain growth of PEG,and a common distribution of heparin and PEG in the matrix was observed. Conclusions The heparin release control can be achieved by adjusting the PEG mass content in heparin-loading PCL/PEG membranes prepared by blending method and freeze-drying technology. The proposed samples may have anticoagulant effect, which can be expected to be used as small-diameter artificial vascular prosthesis material.

ObjectiveTo investigate the incidence of early postoperative complications in living donor liver transplantation.MethodsPostoperative data of 170 living liver donors were retrospectively collected from January 2002 to August 2009 and the collected data were divided into two groups according to the type of donors (right-lobe graft,R group and left lobe graft,L group). Early postoperative complications were analyzed using Clavien classification system.ResultsThe difference between two groups was no statistically significant in donor's age, body mass index, operation time and other characters (P>0.05).R group had a bigger actual cut weight of donor liver (P<0.05),smaller residual liver weight (P<0.05) which also smaller than standard liver weight (P<0.05),and a longer hospital stay (P<0.05) than L group.During hospitalization,62 complications occurred in 55 cases with the total complication rate being 32.35% (55/170). In detail, the incidence of complications was 34.39% (54/157) in R group, and 7.69% (1/13) in L group (chi-square value =2.787,P>0.05).Among these 62 complications, there were 39 times of Ⅰ grade,5 times of Ⅱ grade,16 times of Ⅲ grade,2 times of Ⅳ a grade. All the complications were cured by active treatment and all donors survived well. Conclusion Although the security of living donor liver transplantation is better, the risk of serious complications must be faced. We must strictly select and assess the donor before the operation, very carefully carry out surgical operation, and pay more attention to postoperative management in order to avoid postoperative complications of donors.

In July 1997, a strain (GB30) of virus was isolated from 60 samples of brain tissues of Murina aurata (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) co llec ted in Gengma county, Yunnan province, China. Isolation of virus was negative fr om 4 samples of brain tissues of Rousettus leschenaulti (Chiroptera: Pteropo did ae) collected in Gengma. GB30 virus strain could regularly cause illness and dea th in suckling mice, produced evident CPE in BHK21 cells. It agglutinated red b lood cells of dove at pH5.75~7.4. This virus has been identified serologically by hemagglutination inhibition and immunofluorescent tests using Japanese enceph alitis (JE), dengue (DEN) type 1,2,3,4, and chikungunya (CHIK) viruses monoclona l antibodies, and JE and sindbis (SIN) viruses immune sera. It showed specific r eaction to JE virus only and no reaction with DEN 1~4, CHIK and SIN viruses. Th erefore it can be identified as JE virus. This is the first report on the isolat ion of JE virus from Murina aurata. The results showed that bats are conside red as the reservoir and amplifier host of JE virus transmission in nature.
