OBJECTIVETo study the effect of medicines for activating blood and reinforcing Qi on the number of new micro-vessels and the protein expressions of VEGF and bFGF in the infarcted myocardium edge area of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) model in rats.
METHODThe AMI model of rats was established. After the successful model establishment, rats were randomly divided into the sham-operated group, the model group, the Danshen-Huangqi (1 : 2) group, the Danshen-Huangqi (1 : 1) group, the Chuanxiong-Huangqi (1 : 2) group, the Danshen group, the Chuanxiong group, the Chishao group and the Shexiang Baoxin pill group, with five rats in each group. Rats in each medicated group were orally administered with drugs as per 13.5 g x kg(-1) x d(-1) once everyday for three weeks. The immunohistochemical SP method was adopted to detect the expression of vWF in myocardial tissues, and count the number of micro-vessels (MVC). The protein expression of VEGF and bFGF in myocardial tissues were determined by Western blot.
RESULTThe new micro-vessels stained by vWF factor could be found in the infarcted myocardium edge area of the sham-operated group, the model group and all of medicated groups. The sham-operated group show unobvious new micro-vessels in myocardial tissues. A small amount of new micro-vessels could be seen in the infarcted myocardium edge area of the model group. Whereas a larger number of micro-vessels could be seen in the infarcted myocardium edge area of all of medicated groups. The differences between the sham-operated group and the model group had statistical significance (P < 0.05). The differences between each medicated group and the model group had statistical significance as well (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). The lowest protein expression of VEGF and bFGF was found in myocardium of the sham-operated group, with the statistical significance compared with the model group (P < 0.05). Compared with the model group, each medicated group showed significant increase in the protein expression of VEGF and bFGF, with the statistical significance between them (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe Danshen group, the Chuanxiong group, the Chishao group, the Danshen-Huangqi (1 : 2) group, the Danshen-Huangqi (1 : 1) group and the Chuanxiong-Huangqi (1 : 2) group show the effect in promoting angiogenesis. Their mechanism for promoting angiogenesis may be related to the improvement of the protein expressions of VEGF and bFGF, so as to increase the contents of VEGF and bFGF and promote the angiogenesis of new vessels.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2011;49(4):294-300
OBJECTIVETo investigate the blood lead status and influencing factors among preschool children in the sampling city.
METHODStratified-clustered-random sampling was used. Standardized questionnaire and peripheral blood samples were obtained from 69 968 children aged 0-6 years in fixed kindergartens and communities of Yinchuan, Xi'an, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hefei, Beijing, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Huhhot, Shijiazhuang, Haikou, Dalian, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Nanning and Changsha from 2004 to 2008, respectively. Tungsten atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry was employed to determine the blood lead level of children.
RESULTThe proportion of children with blood lead level ≥ 100 µg/L was 7.57% (among which the proportion of high blood lead level, mild lead poisoning, moderate lead poisoning, severe lead poisoning were 91.0%, 2.76%, 3.32%, 2.93%, respectively) and the blood lead level was lower than those of the past studies. The proportion of high blood lead level has steadily declined from 2004 to 2008 [the proportions were 10.03%, 7.85%, 7.40%, 6.91% and 4.78%, respectively (χ(2) = 297.36, P < 0.0001)]. The proportion of children with blood lead level ≥ 100 µg/L in Haikou, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Changsha, Xi'an, Wuhan, Hefei, Chengdu, Yinchuan, Harbin, Beijing, Dalian, Huhhot, Nanning and Qingdao were 12.15%, 10.49%, 10.37%, 9.69%, 9.53%, 9.46%, 9.40%, 8.50%, 7.99%, 7.98%, 7.51%, 6.10%, 3.25%, 2.89%, 2.46% and 2.39%, respectively (χ(2) = 768.21, P < 0.0001). By multiple regression method, the risk factors which influenced blood lead status of children were education status of mother, older children, behavior and dietary habit of children, boy, stay for long time in traffic busy areas, the type of housing, taking traditional Chinese and herbal medicine. The protective factors against lead poisoning in children mainly included scattered living, the nutritional status of calcium, iron, zinc, frequent intake of milk, and older mother.
CONCLUSIONThe blood lead level of children has decreased, but is still higher than those in developed countries. Lead exposure remains a public health issue which affects children most. The blood lead level of children is affected by multiple factors. Government and the whole society should pay attention to interrupt the lead pollutant and to promote nutritional health education. With all these efforts, it is possible to stop the progress of lead exposure and reduce its hazardous effects on the growth and development of children.

OBJECTIVE To detect the reversal effect of Guizhi Fuling Wan on cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer SKOV3/DDP cells and its relationship with protein expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and metadherin (MTDH). METHODS Guizhi Fuling Wan (GFW) concentrated solution was prepared according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2015 edition, Wistar rats were given GFW viagavage at 4 g·kg-1·d-1,8 g·kg-1·d-1,16 g·kg-1·d-1,or given saline as blank control for 5 days.Blood samples were taken and the corresponding drug-containing low-dose sera, medium-dose sear, high-dose sera and blank sera were prepared. The XCELLigence RTCA S16 real-time label-free cell analyzer was used to detect the reversal effect by the sera combined with cisplatin or paclitaxel in SKOV3/DDP cells. Annexin V-FITC and PI double-staining were used to detect the apoptosis-inducing effect of the sera in the cells. RT-qPCR and western blot were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression of PTEN and MTDH after the cells treated with the sera. RESULTS The inhibition rate of low-dose sera against SKOV3/DDP cells was less than 5%.After the low-dose sera combined with cisplatin or pacli-taxel, the IC50 of SKOV3/DDP cells against cisplatin and paclitaxel decreased by 3.01 and 1.79-fold, respectively. The total apoptosis rates induced by the low-dose sera,medium-dose sear,high-dose sera and blank sera in SKOV3/DDP cells were 11.08±0.13,19.42±0.30,24.23±0.31,and 3.21±0.24,respec-tively; there was a significant difference between the groups (P<0.01). RT-qPCR results showed that, compared with the blank serum, the sera can up-regulate the expression of PTEN mRNA and down-regulate the expression of MTDH mRNA in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot results showed that the induction effect to PTEN protein and the inhibition effect to MTDH protein by the sera were gradually enhanced with thesera dose increasement. CONCLUSION The resistance reversal effect of Guizhi Fuling Wan on ovarian cancer SKOV3/DDP cells may be related to the inhibition of MTDH, up-regulation of PTEN and induction of apoptosis, providing with an experiment basis for the applica-tion of Guizhi Fuling Wan as a reversal agent for chemotherapy resistance of ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVESTo investigate the impact of previous abdominal operations on the outcome of laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery and to evaluate the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic reoperation in treatment for colorectal cancer.
METHODSAccording to the statistical standards, 653 consecutive patients treated from March 2002 and March 2009 were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into three groups: upper abdominal surgery group (n = 48), middle-lower abdominal surgery group (n = 110) and non-previous abdominal surgery group (n = 495). Demographic, pathoanatomical and surgical data were compared among the three groups.
RESULTSThere was no significant differences in demographic, pathoanatomical data and post-operative complications among the three groups. Compared with the other two groups, middle-lower abdominal surgery subgroup had a higher intra-operative conversion rate due to intra-abdominal adhesion (4.2%, 11.8% and 3.8% in upper abdominal surgery group, middle-lower abdominal surgery group and non-previous abdominal surgery group, respectively). And no significant differences was found in operating time [(132 ± 36), (141 ± 42), (132 ± 36) min], intra-operation blood loss [(58 ± 50), (81 ± 99), (57 ± 57) ml], blood transfusion rate (6.3%, 10.9%, 7.9%), low sphincter-preserving surgery rate (47.1%, 44.7%, 55.2%), time of first flatus passage [(2.5 ± 1.4), (2.9 +/- 1.7), (2.5 ± 2.1) d], fasting time [(5 ± 4), (5 ± 4), (4 ± 3) d], hospital stay [(17 ± 9), (15 ± 8), (16 ± 10) d] between the three groups.
CONCLUSIONSThe history of previous abdominal operations should not be regarded as a contraindication for laparoscopic colorectal cancer reoperation. The laparoscopic reoperation for colorectal cancer is safe and feasible.

BACKGROUNDThe adverse health effects of lead for children under 6 years are well known. Studies to assess the lead exposure among children in China are small in sample size and lack of national representative data. The aim of this study therefore was to describe blood lead levels and identify risk factors for lead exposure among children aged 0 to 6 years living in 16 cities in China.
METHODSWe analyzed data from blood lead levels surveillance in China carried out in 16 large cities between 2004 and 2008. A stratified clustered random sampling strategy was used. A total of 69 968 children aged 0 to 6 years were included. We conducted multiple Logistic regression analyses to explore risk factors to high blood lead level.
RESULTSThe geometric mean blood lead level of the children was 4.50 µg/dl (median: 4.90 µg/dl; IQR: 3.20 - 7.00 µg/dl). Overall prevalence of blood lead level ≥ 10.00 µg/dl among 0- to 6-year-old children was 7.57%. But the proportion of blood lead level ≥ 5.00 but < 10.00 µg/dl was 42.12%. Blood lead levels were significantly higher in boys (4.63 µg/dl) than in girls (4.35 µg/dl) (P < 0.0001). The geometric mean blood lead levels and prevalence of blood lead level ≥ 10.00 µg/dl increased with age (P < 0.0001 for the two trends). After controlling for sociodemographic, dietary and behavior factors, multivariable analysis indicated that lower maternal education, male gender, younger age, often biting pencil or/and toys, walking or playing for long time on the street, not washing hands before eating are major risk factors for higher lead levels.
CONCLUSIONSThe blood lead levels among Chinese children in urban areas are lower than previous studies but close to those of developed countries. However, children with low lead exposure account for almost half and the sociodemographic factors (age, male sex, and low mother education level) continue to be associated with higher blood lead levels.
