1. Acute brain stem infarction-induced anterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia: Clinical and imaging features of 4 cases

Objective To investigate the clinical and radiographic features of anterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia caused by acute brainstem infarction. Methods Four cases of anterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia were retrospectively reviewed by analyzing their clinical and radiographic data together with anatomical features. Results All 4 cases were caused by brainstem ischemic lesions, demonstrating dotted infraction on thin-sliced diffused-weighted imaging at the dorsal side of pontine and the ventromedial side of the fourth ventricle. Among 4 cases, 1 was cured and the other 3 cases achieved improved adduction and diplopia. Conclusion Anterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia is characterized by its dotted lesion in the brainstem at the dorsal side of pontine and the ventromedial side of the fourth ventricle. Thin-sliced MRI facilitates the detection of these lesions.
2.Effects of different acupuncture and moxibustion methods on ultrastructure of gastrocnemius in rats.

OBJECTIVETo explore the efficacy differences in early intervention of different acupuncture and moxibustion methods on gastrocnemius fatigue in rats induced by electrical stimulation.
METHODSFifty male SD rats were randomly divided into a control group, a model group, a hand acupuncture group, an electroacupuncture group and a moxibustion group, 10 rats in each group. Electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve was given in the control group and gastrocnemius fatigue test was induced by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in the model group after anesthesia without other treatment, but just take 6 times interval stimulation in the control group. The hand acupuncture group, the electroacupuncture group and the moxibustion group were treated with the corresponding acupoints stimulation method respectively for 20 min before gastrocnemius fatigue test, and Dazhui (GV 14) and Zusanli (ST 36) were selected. Immediately after gastrocnemius fatigue test, three or four gastrocnemius tissues at the same site on the right side were quickly taken for making specimen for transmission electron microscope (TEM). The changes of skeletal muscle ultrastructure of myofibrils, mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, glycogen particles were observed under TEM.
RESULTS(1) Muscle fibers disorder, partial mitochondrial vacuolization and glycogen particles smaller were shown in the model group. (2) No abnormalities were shown in the hand acupuncture group and the moxibustion group with mitochondrial morphology and number, which better than that in the model group, and glycogen particles increased. (3) Abnormal changes in morphology were shown in the electroacupuncture group with part of the muscle fibers derangement, Z line malalignment and a few mitochondria vacuolization.
CONCLUSIONHand acupuncture, electroacupuncture and moxibustion have the different effects on ultrastructure of gastrocoemius in rats. Acupuncture and moxibustion have shown good effects on the prevention and treatment of exercise-induced skeletal muscle cell and organelle damage and delaying exercise-induced fatigue.

3.Electroacupuncture therapy and corrosion of acupuncture needle.

During the process of electroacupuncture (EA) therapy, whether there being a corrosive effect in ac- upuncture needles was observed. Acupuncture needles were inserted into a rabbit's acupoint to perform a 12-hour electrical stimulation with three types of common EA waveform; additionally two needles were put in 0.9% sodium chloride solution with 12-hour direct current. Afterwards, environmental scanning electron microscope was applied to detect the surface physical characteristics of acupuncture needles. As a result, after a 12-hour continued electri- cal stimulation with three types of common EA waveform in the rabbit, there was no corrosive effect in acupunc- ture needles; but the direct current could cause severe corrosion in acupuncture needles. It is believed that there is no corrosion effect on acupuncture needles in current EA treatment, and some accidents reported in literature may be related to quality of EA device or improper manipulation during the treatment.

4.Changes of the ultrastructures of temporomandibular joint after removal of emotional stress factors in rats.

OBJECTIVETo examine the changes of the ultrastructures of temporomandibular joint after removal of the emotional stress factors in rats.
METHODSThirty-two 12-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into two groups randomly, experimental group and control group. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to execution time, 9-week subgroup and 12-week subgroup with eight rats in each subgroup. Chronic unpredictable stress animal model were firstly established in experimental group in the first 6 weeks, then all the stimulation factors removed and breed normally. After 9 weeks, rats in 9-week subgroup were killed. After 12 weeks, rats in 12-week subgroup were killed. All condyles and articular discs were dissected and observed by scanning electron microscope.
RESULTSThere was some recovery in condyles and articular discs in experimental group under scanning electron microscope. The gelatum on the surface of condyles increased, collagen fibrils became regular and deep layer collagen fibrils less exposed. There were no such obvious changes on the surface of condyles and articular discs in control group.
CONCLUSIONSThe ultrastructure injures of temporomandibular joint in rats induced by emotional stress could be reversed if the stress factors were removed.

5.Demographic characteristics of voluntary blood donors in Zhejiang Province

Objective To analyze the general characteristics of voluntary blood donors, and to provide the basis for establishing effective recruitment mechanism. Methods The information of all whole blood donors (including mobile blood collection cars on the streets , blood donation houses and team blood donors) from 2006 to 2015 was obtained from the Zhejiang blood management information system. The sex, age, occupation, weight, and the amount of blood donation at a time of blood donors were descriptively analyzed. Results There were 5299700 frequencies of donating blood in Zhejiang Province from 2006 to 2015. The annual frequency was on the rise, with an average annual growth rate of 2.99%. There were 3098500 frequencies of male and 2201300 of female with the ratio of 1.4 :1. The frequency of female has declined since 2010. The majority of voluntary blood donors ranged from 18 to 45 years old, and the percentage was 91.44% . The ratios of staff, students and workers were 14.61%, 12.27%, 10.09%, respectively. The annual frequency of staff was on the rise, with an average annual growth rate of 7.71%. The frequency of workers was on the decline, and the frequency of students fluctuated over the years. The ratio of blood donation 400 mL at a time was 41.23%. For 400 mL blood donation at a time, the ratio of male donors (48.86%) was significantly higher than the female donors (30.50%, P<0.001) . In addition, the ratio of blood donation 400 mL at a time was proportional to age and body weight (P<0.001) . Conclusion In Zhejiang Province, the frequency of blood donation has increased year by year. Staff, students and workers with 18 to 45 years old are the main force of blood donation. The frequency of female blood donation has a tendency of dropping, and the ratio of blood donation 400 mL at a time is relatively low. It's necessary to strengthen the propaganda of blood donation.
6.Relationship between AKAP95, cyclin E1, cyclin D1, and clinicopathological parameters in lung cancer tissue.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the correlation between expression of A-kinase anchoring protein 95 (AKAP95) and protein expression of cyclin E1 and cyclin D1 in lung cancer tissue.
METHODSFifty-one cases of lung cancer were included in the study. The protein expression of AKAP95, cyclin E1, and cyclin D1 were measured by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTSThe protein expression of cyclin E1 in lung cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in para-cancerous tissues (positive rate: 75.56%vs 20%, P < 0.01); its expression showed no relationship with histopathological type, lymph node metastasis, and cellular differentiation (P > 0.05). The protein expression of cyclin D1 in lung cancer tissues was higher than that in para-cancerous tissues (positive rate: 69.39% vs 14.29%); its expression showed a significant relationship with histopathological type (P < 0.05). The expression of AKAP95 was correlated with the protein expression of cyclin E1 and cyclin D1 in lung cancer tissues (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONCyclin E1 and cyclin D1 are highly expressed in lung cancer tissue, suggesting that they play an important role in the development and progression of lung cancer. The protein expression of cyclin E1 has no relationship with cellular differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and histopathological type of lung cancer, and the protein expression of cyclin D1 has a significant relationship with histopathological type. The expression of AKAP95 is correlated with the protein expression of cyclin E1 and cyclin D1 in lung cancer tissue.

OBJECTIVETo investigate a new strategy of polylactic acid (PLA) nanoparticles delivery system coating nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) decoy oligonucleotides (ODNs) for inhibiting TF expression in cultured brain microvascular endothelial cells(BMECs).
METHODSPLA nanoparticles coating FITC-labeled NF-kappaB decoy ODNs were formulated by nano-deposition method and the characteristics of nanoparticles were detected. BMECs were isolated and cultured in vitro. The cellular uptake and intracellular localization of nanoparticles in BMECs was detected by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Changes in the expressions of TF and nuclear protein P65 were examined by RT-PCR and Western blot in NF-kappaB decoy ODNs transfected BMECs by LPS stimulation.
RESULTSThe decoy-nanoparticles obtained were uniform spherical particles with an effective diameter of 162.1 nm and a polydispersity index of 0.118. NF-kappaB decoy ODNs encapsulated in nanoparticles could be released in a controlled manner in phosphate-buffered saline for up to 28 days. It was observed that the cellular uptake of nanoparticles were increased with the time of incubation and the concentration of nanoparticles in the medium. Nanoparticles localized mainly in the BMECs cytoplasm. LPS-induced upregulation of TF transcription was inhibited by NF-kappaB decoy ODNs transfection but not by missense ODNs transfection. Furthermore, changes in the transcription level of TF were paralleled by a reduction of capacity of P65 in nuclear extract of NF-kappaB decoy ODNs transfected cells.
CONCLUSIONSThese findings offer a potential therapeutic strategy in the control of TF expression in BMECs in vitro.

9.Anlysis of foot biomechanics characteristic in 303 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVETo investigate foot biomechanics characteristic of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
METHODSThis study was conducted among 303 patients with type 2 diabetes. The whole foot was divided into 10 regions, namely the first toe (T1); the second to fifth toes (T2-5); the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth metatarsals (M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5, respectively); midfoot (MF), and the heel medial (HM). Foot arch index, foot angle and maximum peak pressure (MPP) of the 10 regions were measured using a Footscan gait system.
RESULTSThe maximum peak pressure of 10 regions decreased in the order of M3>M2>HM>M4>HL>M1>M5>T1>ML>T2-5 for the left foot, and in the order of M3>M2>HM>M4>HL>M1>M5>T1>ML>T2-5 for the right foot. The MPP in M1 region was higher in the right than in the left foot (P<0.05). The MPP in M3, M4, M5, and MF was higher in the left than in the right foot (P<0.05). The percentage of high-risk foot (defined by a total plantar pressure ≥70 N/cm) was 34% on the left and 17.7% on the right. An increased BMI was associated with a significant increase in high-risk foot, but not for the right foot in underweight patients. Foot flat phase was extended and forefoot push-off phase shortened in stance phase in the patients. Compared with the right foot, the left foot showed a significantly increased foot arch index and increased low and high arch rates with a decreased normal arch rate. Total plantar pressure was higher in of the left high arch foot than in normal arch foot. The foot angle was significantly larger on the right than on the left. The bilateral total plantar pressures were significantly greater in male patients (P<0.05) and increased with age but were not associated with the duration of DM, foot angle, or glycosylated hemoglobin level.
CONCLUSIONDiabetic patients have obvious alterations in foot biomechanics with abnormalities of the plantar pressure, and the percentage of high-risk foot increases in overweight and obese patients, suggesting the need of body weight control in these patients when administering offloading treatment for prevention of diabetic foot ulcer.

10.A multi-center, double-blind, randomized, parallel group study to evaluate the effects of two different doses of losartan on morbidity and mortality in Chinese patients with symptomatic heart failure intolerant of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor treatment.

BACKGROUNDThere have been no mortality/morbidity endpoint studies with losartan in Chinese heart failure patients. The objective was to evaluate the effects of high-dose vs. low-dose losartan on clinical outcomes in Chinese subjects with heart failure.
METHODSThis study was a post hoc analysis of the Heart failure Endpoint evaluation of Angiotensin II Antagonist losartan (HEAAL) trial (n = 545). Chinese adults with symptomatic heart failure (New York Heart Association (NYHA) II-IV) intolerant of treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors were randomized to losartan 150 mg or 50 mg daily. The primary endpoint was the composite event rate of all-cause death or hospitalization for heart failure. Safety and tolerability were assessed.
RESULTSMedian follow-up was 4.8 years. Baseline characteristics were generally similar to the overall HEAAL cohort. Overall, 120 (44.1%) subjects in the losartan 150 mg group and 137 (50.2%) subjects in the losartan 50 mg group died (any cause) or were hospitalized for heart failure (hazard ratio (OR) 0.807, 95%CI 0.631 - 1.031). There were no notable differences between treatment groups in the proportion of subjects with adverse experiences.
CONCLUSIONThe results of this post hoc analysis in Chinese subjects, although not powered to show significance, were generally consistent with the main study results, which demonstrated a significantly reduced risk of all cause death or hospitalization for heart failure with daily losartan 150 mg vs. losartan 50 mg in subjects with symptomatic heart failure and intolerance to ACE inhibitors, supporting the use of the higher dose for optimum clinical benefit.
