4.Comparison of Growth Characteristics of Four Clusters of Marine Bdellovibrio-and-like Organisms

The temperature and salinity ranges for growth of twelve strains of marine Bdellovibrio-and-like organisms (BALOs) which affiliated with four different phylogenetic clusters in the family Bacteriovoracaceae and the lytic ability of them to six kinds of common shrimp pathogen vibrios were studied. The morphological characteristics of four representative strains were examined with transmission electron microscope. The results showed that the strains within the same cluster or sub-cluster had identical growth temperature or salinity. The growth temperature ranges of clusters IV, VI, IX and X strains were 20?C~35?C, 15?C~35?C, 15?C~40?C, 10?C~40?C, respectively, and the optimum growth temperature was about 30?C or 35?C. The growth salinity ranges of clusters IV, VI, IX and X strains were 5‰~40‰, 2.5‰~30‰, 5‰~60‰ and 5‰~60‰, and the optimum salinities were about 10‰, 5‰, 20‰ and 20‰, respectively. Three of the six kinds of vibrios tested were lysed by all the BALOs, while the others could only be lysed by some of the BALOs. However, differential lysis to some of the vibrios was also observed among BALOs within the same cluster. The four strains of different clusters all exhibited typical BALOs morphology, hav-ing vibrioid cell with a single polar flagellum.
5.ITS sequences variation and phylogenetic analysis on 31 geographical populations of Notopterygium incisum.

In this study, 31 Notopterygium incisum populations were analyzed using ITS sequences to investigate the genetic structure. The results showed that: the ITS region ranged in size from 634 to 635 bp and base composition was with high G + C content of 57.8%. Thirty-one polymorphic sites were detected from 402 sequences of 31 populations of N. incisum, and the proportion of polymorphic sites was 4.88%, in which parsimony informative sites were up to 12. And 31 haplotypes were identified based on these polymorphic sites. Molecular variance analysis (AMOVA) indicated that high genetic differentiation (57%) existed among population, and gene flow was low (N(m) = 0.38) among populations. Phylogenetic relationships of 31 haplotypes were analyzed using NJ method with N. forbesiias an out-group. Phylogenetic analysis showed that 31 haplotypes from different populations mixed together and did not form distinct geographically separated clades.

7.Review of research on the mechanical properties of the human tooth.

'Bronze teeth' reflect the mechanical properties of natural teeth to a certain extent. Their mechanical properties resemble those of a tough metal, and the gradient of these properties lies in the direction from outside to inside. These attributes confer human teeth with effective mastication ability. Understanding the various mechanical properties of human teeth and dental materials is the basis for the development of restorative materials. In this study, the elastic properties, dynamic mechanical properties (visco-elasticity) and fracture mechanical properties of enamel and dentin were reviewed to provide a more thorough understanding of the mechanical properties of human teeth.

9.Effects of riboflavin combined with photosensitization on reduction of Gram-positive and Gram-negative indicating germs in plasma and P-selectin expression of apheresis platelet concentrates.

This study was purposed to confirm the practical efficacy of reducing indicating germs suspended in plasma by riboflavin and photosensitized inactivation and to evaluate its influence on activation of apheresis platelet concentrates. The synergistic effects of riboflavin combined with ultraviolet irradiation on inactivation of germs were investigated by using Escherichia Coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus) as Gram⁻ and Gram(+) indicating germs, respectively. The activation status of apheresis-platelet concentrates treated with riboflavin combined with ultraviolet irradiation was detected by flow cytometry. The results showed that when 50 μmol/L of riboflavin was combined with 6.2 J/ml of ultraviolet irradiation, the T/E ratios reached 1.42 for E. coli and 1.68 for S. Aureus, and reduction of E. Coli and S. Aureus were 3.87 Logs and 3.82 Logs respectively; the CD62p expression level on germ-inactivated platelets stored at 22 degrees C for 0 and 5 days were 4.92% and 36.18% respectively, which slightly increased as compared with controls (3.94% and 32.03)% (p < 0.05). It is concluded that combination of riboflavin with ultraviolet irradiation displays well synergistic effects which can reduce E. Coli and S. Aureus counts, but no significantly influence on platelets. The partial activation of liquid platelets mainly presents metabolism damage during storage, which is found at an acceptable level.

10.Interaction of human oral microbial community.

Human body is inhabited by large number of microbial organisms that form complex ecosystems. Oral cavity is one of the major sites for microbial colonization. Oral microbial diversity is huge as the compositions vary among different oral cavities, different locations within the same oral cavity, or same location at different time points. The differences in compositions and varieties determine the balance of human oral microbial ecosystem, which is directly associated with oral disease or health. This review focuses on the history and new progress of the studies on human oral microbial communities.
