Objective To assess set-up errors measured with kilovoltage cone-beam CT (KV-CBCT), and the impact of online corrections on margins required to account for set-up variability during IMRT for patients with prostate cancer. Methods Seven patients with prostate cancer undergoing IMRT were enrolled onto the study. The KV-CBCT scans were acquired at least twice weekly. After initial set-up using the skin marks, a CBCT scan was acquired and registered with the planning CT to determine the setup errors using an auto grey-scale registration software. Corrections would be made by moving the table if the setup errors were considered clinically significant ( i. e. , > 2 mm). A second CBCT scan was acquired immediately after the corrections to evaluate the residual error. PTV margins were derived to account for the measured set-up errors and residual errors determined for this group of patients. Results 197 KV-CBCT images in total were acquired. The random and systematic positioning errors and calculated PTV margins without correction in mm were:a) Lateral 3. 1,2. 1,9. 3;b) Longitudinal 1.5, 1.8, 5. 1 ;c) Vertical 4. 2,3.7, 13.0. The random and systematic positioning errors and calculated PTV margin with correction in mm were:a) Lateral 1.1,0. 9, 3.4;b) Longitudinal 0. 7, 1.1, 2. 5;c) Vertical 1.1, 1.3, 3.7. Conclusions With the guidance of online KV-CBCT, set-up errors could be reduced significantly for patients with prostate cancer receiving IMRT. The margin required after online CBCT correction for the patients enrolled in the study would be appoximatively 3-4 mm.

Objective: To explore the effects of different doses of Zn on the expression of metallo- thionein(MT) isoforms in hippocampus, olfactory bulb, diencephalon and cortex in stress rats. Method: The animal model of psychological stress was developed by restraint for 4w. Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 8 groups: control group, Zn-deficient group, pair-fed group, Zn -supplemented group and their corresponding stress groups. The expressions of MTs and their mRNAs were detected by Western blot and RT-PCR respectively. Results: In Zn-deficient group, plasma zinc content was decreased, while in Zn -supplemented group slightly increased. Compared with Zn-deficient group, the stress Zn -deficient group had higher expressions of MTs and MT-1 mRNA, MT-3 mRNA in hippocampus, olfactory bulb, diencephalon and cortex. Expressions of MTs in Zn-supplemented group were increased, and much more in corresponding stress group. In addition, the levels of plasma cortisol, IL-6 and IL-1 were increased clearly in Zn-deficient group and stress groups. Moreover, MTs’ productions were different in four brain domains, the highest in hippocampus and the lowest in diencephalon. Conclusion: Zn may affect the expressions of MTs and MT-1 mRNA, MT-3 mRNA in different regions of brain in stress rats. The higher production of MTs in hippocampus may be related to its role in body’s adaptation to stress. Cortisol, IL-6 and IL-1 may be involved in the modulation of expression of MTs.

Objective To determine the reliability of CT perfusion scans and its parameters of ?-variate curve in evaluating the acute myocardial infarction for clinical reference of diagnosis on coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. Methods Imatron C-150 electron beam CT (EBCT) were used to scan a hydrodynamic model which could mimic a change of contrast medium by intravenous injection in vivo. Then 6 adult canines were employed in the experiment with thoracic operation, and branches of the anterior descending and circumflex of left coronary arteries (LCA) were ligated so that myocardial infarction was made out. After intravenous administration of contrast medium, the hearts were scanned with perfusion EBCT and ?-variate curves were manifested. Some heterogeneities and differentiations between the normality and the infarctions were put forward when the parameters of all these curves were analyzed and statistically processed. Two myocardial infarctions were also verified by SPECT, and all the samples stained with TTC method were compared with those on the perfusion images. The pathological study with optical microscope and electron microscope were further carried on. Results The ascending slopes of ?-variate curves were different in the perfusion quantity. The normal curve of canine myocardium showed a somewhat quick ascending pattern first, and then a gradual descending pattern successively, with the ascending time of about 10-13 s, ascending CT value of about 34-37 HU, and peak CT value of about 70-81 HU. Whereas the curve on myocardial infarction demonstrated a prolonged ascending time of about 19.9 s, diminished ascending CT value of only about 20 HU, and peak CT value of about 53.8 HU, which were significantly different from the normality (P
