BACKGROUD/OBEJECTIVES: Arsenic, which causes human carcinogenicity, is ubiquitous in the environment. This study was designed to evaluate modulation of arsenic induced cancer by resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in vegetal dietary sources that has antioxidant and chemopreventive properties, in arsenic trioxide (As2O3)-induced Male Wistar rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: Adult rats received 3 mg/kg As2O3 (intravenous injection, iv.) on alternate days for 4 days. Resveratrol (8 mg/kg) was administered (iv.) 1 h before As2O3 treatment. The plasma and homogenization enzymes associated with oxidative stress of rat kidneys were measured, the kidneys were examined histologically and trace element contents were assessed. RESULTS: Rats treated with As2O3 had significantly higher oxidative stress and kidney arsenic accumulation; however, pretreatment with resveratrol reversed these changes. In addition, prior to treatment with resveratrol resulted in lower blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and insignificant renal tubular epithelial cell necrosis. Furthermore, the presence of resveratrol preserved the selenium content (0.805 +/- 0.059 microg/g) of kidneys in rats treated with As2O3. However, resveratrol had no effect on zinc level in the kidney relative to As2O3-treated groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our data show that supplementation with resveratrol alleviated nephrotoxicity by improving antioxidant capacity and arsenic efflux. These findings suggest that resveratrol has the potential to protect against kidney damage in populations exposed to arsenic.

Objective:To observe the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) in the inner limiting membrane (ILM) of diabetic retinopathy (DR) with macular edema, and analyze the correlation between VEGF and AQP4 expression. Methods:A cross-sectional study. From September 2019 to September 2020, 38 eyes of 38 patients with DR and idiopathic macular hole (iMH) who underwent vitrectomy (PPV) combined with ILM stripping at the Hangzhou campus of The Affiliated Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University at Hangzhou were included in the study. Among them, there were 25 males and 13 females who aged 37-76 years old, average age was 59±10 years old; All eye included 15 right eyes and 23 left eyes. iMH and DR included 9 eyes in 9 cases and 29 eyes in 29 cases, respectively, and they were divided into iMH group and DR group. The DR group was divided into DME group and no DME group according to whether it was accompanied by diabetic macular edema (DME), with 14 eyes and 15 eyes respectively. After the stripped ILM tissue was fixed, immunofluorescence analysis was performed to obtain a picture of the fluorescence mode of AQP4 and VEGF, and the fluorescence intensity value of VEGF and AQP4 was measured by Image J software. The differences of VEGF and AQP4 immunofluorescence values in the specimens between groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance. The correlation between the fluorescence intensity of AQP4 and the fluorescence intensity of VEGF was analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis. Results:The average fluorescence intensity valuesof VEGF and AQP4 in ILM specimens of DME group, no DME group and iMH group were 38.96±7.53, 28.25±3.12, 30.07±4.84 and 49.07±8.73, 37.96±6.45, 38.08±5.04, respectively. The average fluorescence intensity of VEGF and AQP4 in the ILM specimens of the DME group was significantly higher than that of the no DME group and iMH group, and the difference was statistically significant ( F=13.977, 9.454; P<0.05). The average fluorescence intensity values of VEGF and AQP4 on IML specimens in the DR group were 33.80±7.91, 43.76±9.44, respectively. The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that the fluorescence intensity of VEGF and AQP4 in the ILM specimens of the DR group was significantly positively correlated ( r=0.597, P=0.003). Conclusions:The expressions of VEGF and AQP4 in ILM of eyes with DR and DME are significantly increased compared with those without DME. The expression of VEGF and AQP4 in ILM of eyes with DR is positively correlated.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2020;58(6):461-467
Objective:To summarize the clinical manifestation and genetic characteristics of Chinese patients with achondroplasia (ACH) which is caused by pathogenic variants fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene and establish the reference value of height centiles and height for age growth curve of patients for a more practical, simple and useful growth evaluation tool in China. Methods:Through a nationwide cross-sectional survey in China from July 2019 to January 2020 designed by Department of Pediatric Endocrinology and Genetics, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, 210 subjects (110 boys, 100 girls), who harbored the pathogenic variant of FGFR3 gene and were diagnosed with achondroplasia, were recruited. The clinical and genetic data of enrolled subjects were collected and analyzed to explore the clinical genetic characteristics of Chinese ACH patients. Furthermore, according to the data of height (body length under 2 years old) of boy and girl subjects aged 0-12 years, centiles and height for age growth curve of achondroplasia were calculated and established by LMS method respectively. Results:The characteristic clinical manifestations of 210 Chinese patients (0-14 years old) were disproportionate short stature (206/210, 98.1%), macrocephaly and characteristic facial features (205/210, 97.6%), trident configuration of the hands (191/210, 90.9%), limbs deformity (156/210, 74.3%), together with normal intelligence. Up to 81.9% (172/210) of patients have different complications, and the kyphosis (121/210, 57.6%) and narrow thoracic (79/210, 37.6%) are common complications. Besides, up to 98.6% (207/210) of patients harbored hotspot variants of FGFR3 gene which cause G380R amino acid substitutions. It is notable that the growth pattern of boy and girl patients (0-12 years old) is obviously different from the normal children ( t=9.849, 9.596, P<0.01) respectively. The height different between ACH patients and normal children gradually widened with age. The average height of the boy (49.2 cm) and girl patients(48.4 cm) of achondroplasia at birth was -1.22 s and -2 s, however, at the age of twelve, the average height of the boy(113.7 cm) and girl patients(112.4 cm) of achondroplasia was -5.23 s and -6.15 s compared to currently standard reference height for age growth curve of normal children in China, respectively. Conclusions:The results of our study demonstrated that in China disproportionate short stature, macrocephaly and characteristic facial features were typical manifestations of ACH patients, and that up to 98.6% of patients harbored hotspot variants of FGFR3 gene. In addition, the reference value of height centiles and height for age growth curve of ACH patients we establish will be a valuable tool for evaluating the growth pattern, monitoring factors affecting growth, estimating ultimate height, and assessing the curative effect of growth-promoting treatments in Chinese patients with achondroplasia.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in mice and the role of the Notch signaling pathway.Methods:Thirty-six SPF healthy male C57BL/6 mice, aged 6 weeks, weighing 20-22 g, were divided into 6 groups ( n=6 each) using a random number table method: sham operation group (group S), partial hepatectomy group (group PH), non-acupoint electroacupuncture+ partial hepatectomy group (group NPH), partial hepatectomy+ Fli-06 group (group PH+ F), acupoint electroacupuncture+ partial hepatectomy group (group EPH), and acupoint electroacupuncture+ partial hepatectomy+ Fli-06 group (group EPH+ F). All the mice except for group S underwent partial hepatectomy. Fli-06 4.8 mg/kg was intraperitoneally injected starting from 2 days before surgery, once a day, until the mice were sacrificed in group PH+ F and group EPH+ F, while the equal volume of 0.9% sodium chloride solution was injected in the other groups. In EPH group, electroacupuncture of bilateral " Zusanli" acupoints lasting for 15 min was performed using continuous waves with a frequency of 2 Hz and an intensity of 1 mA once a day starting from the time point immediately after surgery for 3 consecutive days. Mice were anesthetized at day 2 after partial hepatectomy, and blood samples were taken from the eyeball for determination of the serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) concentrations (using a fully automated biochemical analyzer) and concentrations of serum epidermal growth factor (EGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) (by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). The mice were subsequently sacrificed and liver tissues were taken for calculation of the liver mass to body mass ratio and for determination of the expression of liver proliferation marker Ki-67 (by immunohistochemical staining), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cyclin D1 (CCND1), Notch Intracellular Domain (NICD), and hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α) (using Western blot) and Notch1, jagged canonical Notch ligand 1 (Jagged1) and hairy and enhancer of split 1 (Hes1) mRNA (by real-time polymerase chain reaction). Results:Compared with group S, the serum ALT, AST, EGF and HGF concentrations were significantly increased, and the expression of hepatic Notch1, Jagged1 and Hes1 mRNA and Ki-67, PCNA, CCND1 and NICD was up-regulated in group PH ( P<0.05 or 0.01). Compared with group PH, the liver mass to body mass ratio and serum EGF and HGF concentrations were significantly increased, the serum ALT and AST concentrations were decreased, and the expression of hepatic Notch1, Jagged1, Hes1 mRNA and Ki-67, PCNA, CCND1, NICD and HIF-1α was up-regulated in group EPH, and the liver mass to body mass ratio and the serum HGF concentrations were significantly decreased, the serum ALT and AST concentrations were increased, and the expression of hepatic Jagged1 and Hes1 mRNA and Ki-67, PCNA, CCND1, NICD, and HIF-1α was down-regulated in group PH+ F ( P<0.05 or 0.01). Compared with group EPH, the liver mass to body mass ratio and serum EGF and HGF concentrations were significantly decreased, the serum ALT and AST concentrations were increased, and the expression of hepatic Notch1, Jagged1, Hes1 mRNA and Ki-67, PCNA, CCND1, NICD and HIF-1α was down-regulated in group EPH+ F ( P<0.01). Conclusions:Electroacupuncture at Zusanli acupoint promotes liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in mice, and the mechanism may be related to the activation of the Notch signaling pathway.

Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine 2025;42(7):833-839
Background Enhancing the sense of honor and belonging among medical staff is a key component of establishing a modern hospital management system. Compared to medical staff at general hospitals, medical staff at oncology hospitals are more prone to job burnout, yet few studies in China have focused on job burnout among employees in oncology hospitals. Objective To propose a hypothetical model in which job well-being moderates the relationship between stressors and occupational burnout, to explore how stressors influence burnout and potential moderating role of job well-being, and to provide better understanding of job burnout and motivate employees based on the double-edge sword effect of stressors. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in May 2022 at a tertiary oncology specialty hospital in Chongqing, China. A total of 1 898 medical staff were recruited. Data were collectedthrough four scales including a general information questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey, Work Stressor Scale, and Occupational Well-being Scale for Medical Staff. Independent sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA were used for univariate comparisons of job burnout. Pearson correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships between job burnout, stressors, and job well-being. Hierarchical linear regression was conducted to identify factors influencing job burnout and to examine potential moderating role of job well-being in the relationship between stressors and job burnout. Results A total of 2 123 questionnaires were distributed, with 1 898 valid responses, yielding an effective response rate of 89.4%. The prevalence of job burnout was 60.1%. The correlation coefficient was 0.717 (P<0.001) between stressors and burnout, −0.784 (P<0.05) between job well-being and burnout, and −0.744 (P<0.001) between stressors and job well-being. The quadratic stressors showed a statistically significant effect on burnout (β=0.404, P<0.01). Job well-being positively moderated the relationship between the linear stressors and burnout (β=1.289, P<0.001) and negatively moderated the relationship between the quadratic stressors and job burnout (β=−0.571, P<0.01), explaining 7.1% of the variance. Conclusion Job burnout prevalence is relatively high among employees in oncology hospitals. There is a curvilinear relationship between stressors and job burnout, with job well-being moderating this relationship. From a practical perspective, it is recommended to establish a tiered stress alert system to monitor employees’ stress levels and prevent prolonged exposure to high-pressure conditions. Additionally, improving employees’ job well-being through institutional incentives and developmental support can enhance its moderating role in mitigating the adverse effects of stressors on job burnout. Meanwhile, fostering coordinated responses between organizations and individuals is crucial for strengthening mental health management systems, thereby supporting a healthy, stable, and sustainable development of the healthcare workforce.
