OBJECTIVE To investigate dopamine level changes in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc) of the limbic system by salicylate and the role of dopamine in the mechanisms of tinnitus.METHODS We recorded the change of dopamine before and after sodium salicylate injection in rats by microdialysis combined with electrochemical methodologies in the nucleus accumbens (NAc).RESULTS Salicylate produced significant increase in dopamine level in the NAc, to a maximum of (321±97)% of baseline and then remain stable. In contrast, saline only produced slight increase.CONCLUSION The increase of dopamine in the NAc may be related to the generation of tinnitus. The data in vivo provide direct evidence of the important role that the dopaminergic system plays in the generation of tinnitus.

Objective:To investigate the effects of an immersive virtual reality system for nasal anatomy in improving the learning interest and theoretical level of eight-year program medical students for nasal anatomy in otolaryngology. Methods:A total of 57 medical students of the 2019 eight-year program in Peking University Health Science Center were divided into three groups naturally, with 19 students in each group. Two of the groups (38 students) were randomly selected as experimental group to receive traditional teaching in combination with the immersive virtual reality system for nasal anatomy, while the remaining group (19 students) served as control group to receive traditional teaching. The teaching effectiveness of the two groups was evaluated through questionnaire surveys and theoretical assessment scores in otolaryngology and nasal anatomy. SPSS 27.0 was used to perform statistical analysis. The two groups were compared using the independent samples t-test and the chi-squared test. Results:According to the survey results, both groups considered rhinology theory and anatomy learning as a challenge during rhinology internship. A significantly higher proportion of students in the experimental group believed that they gained the greatest achievement in rhinology theory and anatomy learning during internship, as compared with the control group (33/38 vs. 12/19, P=0.039). The theoretical score for nasal anatomy-related assessment was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group [(19.0±1.3) vs. (18.1±1.3), P=0.024]. Conclusions:The use of the immersive virtual reality system for nasal anatomy in otolaryngology teaching can promote eight-year program medical students' interest in learning and improve teaching effectiveness.

Objective:To evaluate the early efficacy and safety of transnasal endoscopic decompression in the annulus of zinn (AZ) region for refractory dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) and to preliminarily analyze the correlated factors of postoperative visual function outcome. Methods:From July 2021 to January 2023, 35 patients (56 eyes) with DON who received AZ area decompression in Peking University Third Hospital were included retrospectively, including 9 males (13 eyes) and 26 females (43 eyes), aging (52.2±12.0) years. Among them, 35 eyes underwent two-wall (medial and inferior) orbital decompression using an endonasal endoscopic approach, while 21 eyes received three-wall (medial, lateral, and inferior) orbital decompression through a combined approach. Key parameters such as best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), visual field (MD value), eyeball prominence, intraocular pressure, and complications were recorded. Postoperative data were collected one month after surgery. The statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test and Spearman correlation analysis. Results:Significant outcomes were observed post surgery in BCVA, visual field, intraocular pressure and proptosis ( t value was 8.37, 6.17, 4.50, and 9.20, respectively, all P<0.001). The reduction in proptosis was statistically significant between the 2-wall and 3-wall orbital decompression groups ( t=-2.82, P=0.007). Changes in BCVA, visual field, and intraocular pressure before and after surgery was greater in the 3-wall orbital decompression group compared to 2-wall orbital decompression group, although the difference was not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Change in postoperative visual acuity and visual field was significantly positively correlated with preoperative visual acuity and preoperative visual field (all P<0.001). Similarly, change in intraocular pressure and proptosis was positively correlated with preoperative intraocular pressure and preoperative protrusion (all P<0.001). Preoperative diplopia was reported in seven patients (20.0%), and two new cases (5.7%) were noted post-operation, which resolved within 3 months after surgery. Conclusions:Endoscopic endonasal decompression of the AZ area is a safe and effective surgical treatment for DON, with notable improvements in BCVA. Furthermore, three-orbital wall decompression seems to yield better outcomes in terms of eye retraction.

Objective:
To evaluate the daily airborne pollen concentrations and visiting rate of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and their correlation during 2012-2014 in Beijing.
Methods:
Daily airborne pollen concentrations (55 998 numbers in total and 549 numbers in average) and its constitution from April to September each year (2012 to 2014) were compared. The number of patients with AR (44 203 in total) who visited the outpatient department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Peking University Third Hospital between January 2012 and December 2014 was analyzed by month. Using SPSS 22.0 software,

Objective:
To investigate the role of body fat ratio in the evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea(OSA).
Methods:
A retrospective analysis was made on 174 cases (between November, 2017 and April, 2018 showed that) of sleep monitoring in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology in Peking University Third Hospital. The data included the gender, age, body fat rate, body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). The above data were analyzed by non parametric correlation analysis, receiver operating characterristic (ROC) curve analysis and multiple factor Logistic regression analysis to study the relationship between the gender, age, body fat rate,BMI,neck circumference and other indexes of the patients with AHI.
Results:
Nonparametric correlation analysis showed that the correlation from strong to weak to AHI among women was BMI (

Objective:To observe the efficacy and safety of the M receptor antagonist Bencycloquidium bromide nasal spray in treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis with runny nose as the main symptom. Methods:From August 2021 to September 2021, 134 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis were enrolled in the otolaryngology Outpatient Department of Peking University Third Hospital, First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University and China-Japanese Friendship Hospital of Jilin University, including 71 males and 63 females, with a median age of 38 years. TNSS score and visual analogue scale(VAS) of total nasal symptoms were observed during 2 weeks of treatment with Bencycloquidium bromide nasal spray. Results:TNSS score decreased from (8.89±3.31) on day 0 to (3.71±2.51) on day 14(P<0.001), VAS score of nasal symptoms decreased from (24.86±7.40) on day 0 to (6.84±5.94) on day 14(P<0.001), VAS score of rhinorrhoea decreased from (6.88±2.06) on day 0 to (1.91±1.81) on day 14(P<0.001). Rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire(RQLQ) score decreased from (94.63±33.35) on day 0 to (44.95±32.28) on day 14(P<0.001). The incidence of adverse reaction was low and no serious adverse events occurred during the whole experiment. Conclusion:Bencycloquidium bromide nasal spray has significant efficacy and good safety in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
