Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a palliative regimen of computed tomography (CT)-guided 125I seed im-plantation combined with chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer. Methods:A total of 21 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer, who received 125I seed implantation and chemotherapy, were retrospectively analyzed. Out of the 29 lesions detected, 25 lesions were suitable for 125I seed implantation. Treatment planning system (TPS) was implemented preoperatively to determine the number and dis-tribution of 125I seeds. Under CT guidance, 125I seeds were implanted into the recurrent lesions using the TPS. Within 3 d of 125I seed im-plantation, liposomal paclitaxel was administered by intravenous infusion on day 1 and carboplatin by infusion via the feeding artery of tumor on day 2. Chemotherapy was repeated on a 21-day schedule. Efficacy and complications were evaluated during follow-up. Re-sults:After two cycles of chemotherapy, out of the 25 recurrent lesions that underwent 125I seed implantation, four lesions showed com-plete remission, 14 with partial remission, three with stable disease, and four with progression of disease. The objective response rate was 72%, and the pain relief rate was 82.4%. Karnofsky's performance status scores increased dramatically (P=0.019). The median pro-gression-free survival time was 6.8 months, median overall survival time was 14.2 months, and the 1-year survival rate was 42.9%. He-matologic toxicity and gastrointestinal reactions were the primary adverse conditions. No severe radiation complications and treat-ment-related deaths were observed in all patients. Conclusion:CT-guided 125I seed implantation combined with chemotherapy is active and well-tolerated in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. This combined treatment cannot only significantly enhance the objective re-sponse rate, but also leads to remarkable improvement in cancer-related symptoms.

OBJECTIVETo establish the quality standards of roasted ginger and charry ginger prepared from dried ginger.
METHODThe basic quality information of roasted ginger and charry ginger investigated by analysis of marketed samples. Ten batches of two roasted ginger and charry ginger were prepared in medium-scale from four main growth places by the processed criterion. The quality information includes contents of ash, acid-insoluble ash, water-soluble extract and 6-gingerol. The content of 6-gingerol were determined by HPLC method.
RESULTThe contents of total ash, acid-insoluble ash and water-soluble extract in processed ginger from medium-scale production were 6.3% - 7.0%, 0.3% - 0.7% and 22.11% - 41.61%, and that in charry ginger were 5.0% - 6.0%, 0.4 - 0.6 % and 20.94% - 44.92%, respectively. The contents of 6-gingerol in roasted ginger from medium-scale production and market samples were 1.05 -5.34 mg x g(-1) and 1.01-4.81 mg x g(-1), and those indexes in charry ginger were 0.43-3.81 mg x g(-1) and 0.44-3.07 mg x g(-1), respectively. Total ash, acid-insoluble ash and water-soluble extract of the two ginger processed products had no obvious difference in batch-to-batch,but the contents of 6-gingerol were closely related to their growth places.
CONCLUSIONThe above data provide evidences for production and quality control of ginger processed products.

AIM: To clarify the effects of specific and non-specific cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors on gastric epithelial cell proliferating and gastric healing following acid-induced damage. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given 1 mL of 0.6 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the stomach. Ten minutes after the administration of the acid, the animals were given NS-398 (COX-2 inhibitor) or indomethacin. Levels of COX-1 and COX-2 in the gastric mucosa before and after HCl-administration were analyzed using western blotting and immunohistochemical staining. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was detected using immunohistochemistry for epithelial cell proliferation. Gastric lesion index (LI) was assessed using planimetry. RESULTS: Expression of COX-2 was enhanced mainly in surface epithelial cells and neck cells following HCl-administration. At 24 h following acid administration,PCNA labeling index (PCNA-LI) was (22.72?4.33) % and (21.98?5.18) % in the groups treated with 40 mg/kg of NS-398 and indomethacin respectively, which was significantly lower than that in the control group [ (34.46?3.61) %,P

AIM: To clarify the effects of gastrin on t he expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) and several growth factors in rat gastric mu cosa. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were fasted for 24 hours and s ubcutaneously injected with saline or gastrin 17 at doses of 1 ?g/kg, 10 ?g/kg and 100 ?g/kg, respectively. The expression of COX-1, COX-2, heparin-binding e p idermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) and hepatocyte growth factor ( HGF) in the gastric mucosa were examined using Western blotting and immunohistoc hemical staining. Effects of a potent gastrin receptor antagonist YM022 on the e xpression of COX-1, COX-2, HB-EGF and HGF in gastric mucosa were also evaluated. RESULTS: Gastrin dose-dependently increased the expression of C OX-2 and HB-EGF in rat gastric mucosa while the expression of COX-1 and HGF did not change significantly after treatment with gastrin. However, pretreatment wit h YM022 dose-dependently abolished the up-regulation of COX-2 and HB-EGF express ion induced by gastrin. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that gastrin up-regulates C OX-2 and HB-EGF expression in rat gastric mucosa, indicating that COX-2 and HB-E GF are involved in pathogenesis of the gastrin-related gastric mucosal hyperplas ia and carcinoma of stomach.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2010;27(2):249-252
The frequency-domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is achieved by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the time-domain signals. Usually we are only interested in the portion lying in a frequency band of the whole spectrum. A method based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) and frequency-selection is presented in this article. The method quantifies the spectrum lying in the interested frequency band and reduces the interference of the parts lying out of the band in a computationally efficient way. Comparative experiments with the standard time-domain SVD method indicate that the method introduced in this article is accurate and timesaving in practical situations.

BACKGROUND:Obesity has become a global health issue, often accompanied by complications including obesity-related muscle atrophy. While exercise has been reported to improve various obesity-related diseases, there is limited research focusing on exercise modes. OBJECTIVE:To compare the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training(MICT)and high-intensity interval training(HIIT)on obesity-related muscle atrophy in mice under the premise of the same exercise distance, providing a scientific basis for exercise interventions for obesity-related muscle atrophy. METHODS:Seventy-two male C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups(n=12 per group):standard chow diet, standard chow diet+MICT,standard chow diet+HIIT,high-fat diet,high-fat diet+MICT,and high-fat diet+HIIT.The study evaluated the effects of 8-week treadmill training with different exercise modes on long-term high-fat diet-induced muscle atrophy by detecting muscle mass, muscle index, muscle fiber cross-sectional area, muscle lipid deposition, and the expression of muscle atrophy marker genes Murf-1 and Atrogin-1 in the gastrocnemius muscle of mice exposed to long-term high-fat diet. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared to the high-fat diet group, both MICT and HIIT improved the decrease in gastrocnemius muscle index(MICT+18.8%vs.HIIT+17.6%,not significant between the two modes),muscle fiber atrophy(MICT+15.5%vs.HIIT+13.7%,not significant between the two modes),and muscle lipid deposition(MICT-19.8%vs.HIIT-17.1%,not significant between the two modes). At the gene level, compared with the high-fat diet group, both MICT and HIIT could significantly down-regulate the expression of Murf-1(MICT-62.4%vs.HIIT-52.6%,the down-regulation caused by MICT was significantly greater than that by HIIT;P<0.01)and Atrogin-1(MICT-43.3%vs.HIIT-29.8%,the down-regulation caused by MICT was significantly greater than that by HIIT;P<0.01).Based on exercise mode comfort and genetic evidence,MICT mode might be more suitable for exercise interventions in obesity-related muscle atrophy.
