Chinese Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2010;18(4):247-253
Objective To understand the application of dietary supplements among adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2MD) in two areas of China. Methods A total of 615 T2MD patients were recruited from three hospitals in Beijing and Shenyang, with convenience sampling for the study using self-reported questionnaires. Data were statistically analyzed. Results Overall 34. 8% of the participants (22.5% in Beijing and 45.5% in Shenyang, respectively) reported ever use of at least one dietary supplement in the past 12 months. The most commonly used supplement was royal jelly ( 16. 1% ), followed by vitamins ( 10. 1% ), calcium (8. 8% ),fish oil (7. 3% ), spirulina (3.9%), and lecithin (2. 3% ). Except that royal jelly was used for complementary treatment for T2MD, most of the other supplements were used for improving their body defense. In addition, more than 20 other health dietary supplements were also used for diabetes-related conditions in 8. 5% of the participants surveyed. The participants' main sources of information about dietary supplements were from mass media or recommendations by relatives and friends. About half of supplements users perceived that the dietary supplements were effective. The application of dietary supplements was associated with gender, educational background, living area, perceived burden of medical cost, stage of diabetes, comorbidity, and body mass index (BMI) of the patients ( all P <0. 05). Conclusions Dietary supplements are widely used among T2MD patients in Beijing and Shenyang. The types of these dietary supplements are diverse and lack professional instructions. It is recommended that information on dietary supplements should be included in diabetes education.

Objective:To examine whether the existence of the donor-and-recipient-derived DNA chimerism in recipient’s plasma can be a predictive marker for the status of transplanted organ. Methods:One hundred and twenty-six female patients who had been transplanted with male kidney were enrolled in the present study. In these female recipients, the SRY1,DYZ11st and DYZ12nd genes on the Y chromosome from the plasma were prospectively examined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Results:SRY1,DYZ11st and DYZ12nd sequences were detected in the cell-free blood (plasma) of 97 (77%) of 126 female patients with male kidney. The average time-span when the transplanted kidneys functioned was 8.7 years and 5.4 years among microchimerism-positive and microchimerism-negative recipients, respectively. The frequency of the patients who had acute rejection after renal transplantation was approximately 10% and 28%in microchimerism-positive and microchimerism-negative recipients, respectively.Serum creatinine levels in microchimerism-positive patients were significantly lower than those in microchimerism-negative patients. Conclusion:These results suggest that plasma DNA microchimerism is present in certain patients following renal transplantation and measurement of plasma DNA microchimerism using quantitative RT-PCR might be a useful predictor for the acceptance of transplanted kidneys.

Journal of Chinese Physician 2001;0(06):-
Objective To study the practical value of serum prealbumin and butyrylcholinesterase in Child-Pugh classification of liver cirrhosis. Methods 66 serum samples of patients with liver cirrhosis and 50 serum samples of the healthy subjects were collected for detecting prealbumin (PA) level and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity, as well as hepatic functional indices(serum albumin, total bilirubin and alanine aminotransferase). The patients were classified according to the Child-Pugh score. Results Compared with healthy subjects, the content of PA and the activity of BuChE significantly decreased in the patients with liver cirrhosis. According to the Child-Pugh classification, PA content and BuChE activity in different grades of liver cirrhosis varied obviously. Conclusion The content of serum PA and the activity of serum BuChE had an important guiding significance in diagnosing the extent of liver cirrhosis, which can serve as effective indices for diagnosis of patients'condition and prognostic evaluation of liver cirrhosis.

Objective To develop an automatic algorithm to predict the dose-volume histogram (DVH) and implement it in clinical practice. Methods Based on the prior information in the existing plan, such as dosimetric results of organs at risk (OARs) and OAR-target spatial relationship,a two-dimensional kernel density estimation was implemented to predict the DVH of OARs.The predicted DVH curves were converted into objective functions that would be implemented in the Pinnacle treatment planning system.Comparisons between predicted and actual values and between Auto-plan and manual planning were made by paired t test. Results We applied this algorithm to 10 rectal cancer patients,10 breast cancer patients, and 10 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. The predicted DVH of OARs showed that the deviation between the actual and predicted values at important clinical dose points were within 5%(P>0.05).The re-planning for the 10 breast cancer patients using Auto-plan showed that the heart dose was significantly reduced and the target coverage was increased, which was consistent with the predicted results. Conclusions The method proposed in this study allows for accurat DVH prediction, and, combined with Auto-plan,can be used to generate clinically accepted treatment plans.
