Objective To investigate the lesionsin theleft thalamus and to explore their correlation with executive functionin patients with subcortical ischemic vascular disease(SIVD)by using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Methods Fourteen patients with vascular dementia (VaD), 14 patients with vas-cular cognitive impairment without dementia(VCIND)and 14 normal controls (NC) were recruited. The quantitative analy-sis of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), Choline (Cho), myoinositol (MI) and Creatine (Cr) resonance signals in region of interests (ROI) in the left thalamus were measured. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values in the same region were examined by using DTI. The relationship were analyzedamong the MRS, DTI ratios and cognitive impairment reflect-ed in MMSE and trail making test(TMT). Results The NAA/Cr ratio showed a gradual decrease in the left thalamus of VaD andVCIND patients compared with controls(F=3.656, P=0.038). There was no significant difference in NAA/Cr ra- tiobetween VaD and VCIND patients.Compared with controls, patients with VaD and VCIND demonstrated increased MD value in the left thalamus(F=3.882, P=0.030).There was no significant difference in MD value between VaD and VCIND patients (P>0.05). There were no correlations between NAA/Cr, MI/Cr, Cho/Cr value and DTI parameters in the ROI (P>0.05). TMTb time was positively associated with Cho/Cr(r=0.520,P=0.001 ) and with MD value in the left thalamus (r=0.305, P=0.044). Conclusions Combination of 1H-MRS with DTI can provide the valuable informationon the potential lesions in the thalamus in patients with SIVD. The Cho/Cr and MD values in the leftthalamus may be correlated with ex-ecutive function.

This study was aimed to investigate the clinical effect and safety of Qing-Fei Jie-Du (QFJD) decoction on treating lobar pneumonia in children.Ninety cases of children diagnosed with lobar pneumonia in hospital were selected by double-centre,random and control method.Cases were divided into the test group (60 cases) and the control group (30 cases. The ratio between the test group and the control group was 2∶1.It can fully demonstrate the effect of the test group without any influence on the statistical analysis).Children of the control group were given conventional medicine with placebo, while children of the test group were given conventional medicine with modified QFJD decoction. The treatment course was 2 weeks. The clinical symptoms including fever, cough, lung rale, lung image (X-ray or CT scan),laboratorial index and safety were compared between two groups. The results showed that the recovery rate of the test group was 81.7%;and the recovery rate of the control group was 66.7%.The difference between them was statistically significant (P<0.05).The comparison of safety between two groups indicated that the treatment of the test group was safer than control group with statistical difference (P<0.05).It was concluded that modified QFJD decoction had a significant clinical effect and was very safe in the treatment of children with lobar pneumonia.

Objective To study the effect of Xiaoqinglong Decoction on the expression of TSLP in airway epithelial cells of asthmatic model mice. Methods Thirty healthy female BALB/C mice were divided into the blank control group, asthma model group and Xiaoqinglong Decoction group,10 cases in each group. The each group adopted corresponding intervention measures. Then the bronchial and lung tissues were taken. The expression level of bronchial TSLP was detected by immunofluorescence, and the expression level of TSLP mRNA and protein in lung tissue was detected by qRT-PCR and Western Blot. Results The mouse bronchial epithelial cell membrane TSLP staining was strongly positive in the asthma model group, which was weakly positive in the Xiaoqinglong Decoction group and negative in the blank control group.Compared with the asthma model group, mice lung tissue TSLP mRNA expression level in the Xiaoqinglong Decoction group and blank control group was decreased(P<0.05),the Xiaoqin-glong Decoction group was slightly higher than the blank control group, but the inter-group difference was not statistically signifi-cant(P>0.05).The expression level of lung tissue TSLP protein in the Xiaoqinglong Decoction group and blank control group was lower than that in the asthma model group(P<0.05),the Xiaoqinglong Decoction group was slightly higher than the blank control group, but the inter-group difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusion Xiaoqinglong decoction has obvious inhibiting effect on the expression of TSLP in airway epithelial cells of asthmatic model mice.

The purification of parasite-infected erythrocytes from whole blood containing
leucocytes is crucial for many downstream genetic and molecular assays in parasitology.
Current methodologies to achieve this are often costly and time consuming. Here, we
demonstrate the successful application of a cheap and simple Non-Woven Fabric (NWF) filter
for the purification of parasitized red blood cells from whole blood. NWF filtration was
applied to the malaria-parasitized blood of three strains of mice, and one strain of rat, and to
Babesia gibsoni parasitized dog blood. Before and after filtration, the white blood cell (WBC)
removal rates and red blood cell (RBC) recovery rates were measured. After NWF filter
treatment of rodent malaria-infected blood, the WBC removal rates and RBC recovery rates
were, for Kunming mice: 99.51%±0.30% and 86.12%±8.37%; for BALB/C mice: 99.61%±0.15%
and 80.74%±7.11%; for C57 mice: 99.71%±0.12% and 84.87%±3.83%; for Sprague-Dawley rats:
99.93%±0.03% and 83.30%±2.96%. Microscopy showed WBCs were efficiently removed from
infected dog blood samples, and there was no obvious morphological change of B. gibsoni
parasites. NWF filters efficiently remove leukocytes from malaria parasite-infected mouse
and rat blood, and are also suitable for filtration of B. gibsoni-infected dog blood.
