Objective To investigate the correlation between serum amyloid A (SAA) and disease activity (DAS28) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods Forty-four patients with RA, 35 patients with systemic lupus erythe-matosus (SLE), 18 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and 30 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in this study. The levels of SAA were measured by ELISA. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was measured by the Westergren method. The value of serum C reactive protein (CRP) was examined by immunonephelometry assay. The correlation between SAA and DAS 28, ESR and CRP was assessed, respectively. Results The SAA levels were significantly higher in RA group than those of SLE, OA, and HC groups (P<0.05). The serum ESR and CRP levels were both higher in RA group than those of OA and HC groups (P>0.05), but there was no significant difference between RA group and SLE group. There was positive correlation between SAA and DAS28, ESR, and CRP levels (rs=0.790, P<0.001;rs=0.674, P<0.001;rs=0.679, P=0.004), respective-ly. Conclusion SAA may be a new serological marker to assess disease activity in RA.

ObjectiveTo retrospectively analyze the abdominal computer tomography (CT)findings and pathological results of chronic intestinal schistosomiasis in order to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the disease.MethodsThe plain plus enhanced CT scanning was performed in 56 cases (male 37,female 19; mean age 69.2 years). All cases confirmed by pathological examination. The location, shape, size, calcification and pattern of enhancement of lesion were analyzed by two radiological physicians independently.ResultsThe colon wall of all 56 cases was presented with thickening (0.3-1.2 cm) by CT scanning, among which,43 (76.8%) were presented with welldistributed thickening. The calcification of colon wall included linear calcification (n=42),tram-like calcification (n=19) and spot calcification (n=8).The margin of calcification was clear. The locations of calcification in colon were as follows:whole colon (n =5 ),ascending colon (n =9 ),transverse colon (n=12),descending colon (n =24),rectosigmoid (n=34) and rectum (n=30).There were 17 cases presented with severe calcification. The pathological examinations confirmed that linear and tram-like calcification resulted from calcified ova deposited in submucous, subserosa. In 8 cases with spot calcification and 17 with severe calcification, there were calcified ova deposited in all layers of colon wall, accompanied by chronic inflammation, polyp and schistosomiasis granuloma. There were 5 cases complicated by adenocarcinoma.ConclusionsCT scanning is an important imaging method in the diagnosis of chronic intestinal schistosomiasis, with the distinguishing presentation of well-distributed thickening and calcification in the colon wall. When irregular thickening, mass or nodular are found in the colon wall of patients with chronic intestinal schistosomiasis, colorectal carcinoma should be highly suspected.

Objective To explore the application of interferon(IFN)response-related genes in predicting the outcome of antiviral treatment in chronic hepatitis C. Methods SuperArray microarray was used to detect the expression of IFN response-related genes in peripheral blood monocytes(PBMC)from chronic hepatitis C patients before treatment. SPSS 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results Ten patients were classified as rapid responders(RVR)and seven patients as non-RVRs according to the serum HCV RNA level after 4 weeks of treatment in 17 patients. Compared with healthy controls, nine differentially expressed genes were found in RVR patients, one up-regulated and eight down-regulated; eighteen differentially expressed genes were found in N-RVR patients, all down-regulated. Five differentially expressed genes were found between the patients with RVR and N-RVR: four up-regulated genes were PRKCZ, PRKRA, IRF5 and TNFSF10(t =5.44, 3.13, 5.24 and 2.30, P=0. 000, 0.010, 0.005 and 0. 044); one up-regulated gene was IFIT5(t = 2.43, P = 0. 035). Of seventeen patients, 12 were HCV genotype 1b, 5 were HCV genotype 2a. Compared with HCV2a, IFI6 and IFI44 gene in HCV1b were downregulated(t = 2.42 and 2.45, P = 0. 038 and 0. 033). Conclusions The expression of IFN responserelated genes is associated with response to IFN treatment. HCV genotype 1 b is more successful in inducing the down-regulation of IFN response-related genes than that of HCV genotype 2a, thus leading to the resistance to IFN.
