OBJECTIVETo explore the relationship between ulcerative colitis (UC) and lung injuries by assessing their clinical manifestations and characteristics.
METHODSFrom July 2009 to April 2012, 91 UC patients presenting to Longhua Hospital who met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in this retrospective study. According to the scores of disease activity index, the patients were divided into the mild, moderate, and severe groups. Meanwhile, the records of pulmonary symptoms, chest X-ray image, and pulmonary function were reviewed.
RESULTSSixty-eight (74.7%) patients had at least 1 pulmonary symptom, such as cough (38.5%), shortness of breath (27.5%), and expectoration (17.6%). And 77 (84.6%) had at least 1 ventilation abnormality. Vital capacity value was significantly lower in the severe group than that in the mild group (91.82%±10.38% vs. 98.92%±12.12%, P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSLung injury is a common extraintestinal complication of UC. According to the theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine that the lung and large intestine are related, both the lungs and large intestine should be treated simultaneously.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2011;29(9):848-851
BackgroundIdiopathic epiretinal membranes(ERMs) is a common eye disease condition that leads to progressive decline of visual acuity. Studying the risk factors relating to this disease will shed light on its pathogenesis and allow opthalmologists to screen the affected individuals among the high-risk population and prepare for prevention and management strategies. ObjectiveThis survey was to investigate the risk factors of idiopathic ERMs in the population undergoing routine health check-ups. MethodsThe clinical data of idiopathic ERMs was obtained from the population of routine health check-ups in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from November 2009 to October 2010. The examination outcomes were compared between the individuals with and without idiopathic ERMs. The demographic and clinical factors associated with idiopathic ERMs were analyzed and assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Result A total of 27 400 people were included in the survey and idiopathic ERMs were diagnosed in 76 cases. No obvious eye complaint was obtained from the idiopathic ERMs. The number of people affected with idiopathic ERMs was 12 ( 12/11 659 ) in the below 40 years group, 21 (21/4595) in the 51-60 years group and 32 (32/2544) in the over 60 years group. Hypertension, diabetes, diedyslipidemia, renal function insufficiency ,and cataract were found in 42% ,5% ,66% ,6% and 8% of the patients, respectively. The univariate logistic regression analyses revealed that significant correlations were found between age, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and history of cataract( P<0. 01 ). Multivariate regression models showed that the risk of idiopathic ERMs increased in age of 51-60( OR=2. 5,95% CI:1. 2-5.4,P=0.02) and over 60 years( OR =7.3,95% CI:3.4-15.6 ,P<0.01 ) and patients suffering from hyperlipidemia ( OR--2. 1,95% CI:1. 3-3.5, P<0. 01 ). ConclusionsOver the age of 50 years and hyperlipidemia are primary risk factors of idiopathic ERM.

Chinese Journal of Cancer 2006;25(11):1368-1373
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: CCAAT-enhancer binding protein ε (C/EBPε) is a kind of nuclear transcriptional factor expressed predominantly in myeloid cells, and may be a critical regulator of myeloid differentiation, which can activate the transcription of a subset of myeloidspecific genes. This study was to detect the cell-specific expression of C/EBPε, and to investigate the effect of C/EBPε overexpression on c-Myc expression, cell cycle distribution, and cell differentiation of human myelomonocytic leukemia cell line U-937. METHODS: The expression of C/EBPε in 5 hematopoietic cell lines (U-937, NB4, HL-60, K-562 and Jurkat T cell lines) was tested by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). According to the RT-PCR results, human myelomonocytic leukemia cell line U-937 was selected and transfected with pcDNA3.1-C/EBPε32 expression vector by electroperforation, and screened by G418 to yield positive clones which were termed U-937-C/EBPε32. The expression of C/EBPε and c-Myc in U937-C/EBPε32 cells was detected by RT-PCR and Western blot; cell cycle and differentiation of U937-C/EBPε32 cells was analyzed by flow cytometry. RESULTS: C/EBPε overexpression obviously increased the expression of CD11b (a ceil surface marker of granulocyte maturity). The positive rate of CD11b was significantly higher in U-937-C/EBPε32 cells than in U-937 and U-937-pcDNA3.1 cells(92.56% vs.77.46% and 74.81% ), while c-Myc expression and cell cycle had no changes. CONCLUSION: C/EBPε might be an essential transcriptional regulator for U-937 cells differentiating into granulocytes.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2005;13(5):809-811
To study the effects of Qingdai compound on proliferation and apoptosis of K562 cells, as well as the expression of bcr/abl and JWA mRNA, K562 cells were treated in culture with different concentrations of Qingdai compound (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 20 mg/ml) and harvested at 24 hours. Then morphological changes were observed by light microscopy (LM); expressions of bcr/abl and JWA were detected with semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The results showed that morphological changes were observed as the increment of the Qingdai compound concentration. Inhibition effects on proliferation and apoptosis in K562 cells were seen. A concentration-dependent decreases were found in bcr-abl and JWA mRNA expression of K562 cells. Qingdai compound partially inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis of K562 cells. Expressions of both bcr/abl and JWA, which took part in cell proliferation and apoptosis, were down-regulated in a dose dependent manner. In conclusion, Qingdai compound can partially inhibit the expressions of bcr/abl and JWA genes in K562 cells, and the clinical effect of Qingdai compound on CML may be associated with apoptosis of leukemic cells.
